Really enjoyed the update as always John!

The technical shots of the railway bridge, tunnel, trails etc are great stuff.

I really liked shot 18 as well.

The little details like the diagonal fences and the billboard make such a difference.

That's one of the best things about visiting Anduin Valley.

There are always ideas that can be taken away and used in our own cj's and md's.

Thanks John, take care.

Phil

A fun intersection indeed. Nice to see it progress. I am in the mood to go to Shorty's now, myself!! As I read your ocmments, I was thinking about the new NAM. It has many good features, but I am heavily reliant upon the ped walkways and they get less functionality in the new one. I wish they would add more features to it so I can go vehicle-less in the ancient cities or grow homes w/o vehicle roads.

No snow here but 20 degrees colder and dreary today. Have a great weekend!

John- A particularly outstanding update, and we all know you are always topping yourself, so that's meant to be about as emphatic as I can make it.  Your use of jeroni's seasonal trees is outstanding, the careful changes and adjustments you make are a marvel to watch, and the use of PW is simply masterful.  With regard to the latter, everything looks so carefully and meticulously placed.  I must be in too big a hurry or something.

Sorry about my last post- ST ate my paragraph or so long addition and I simply ran out of time.  It took over two minutes for page 139 to load up, and that was on the second try.

You are getting such great comments, as well.  It's wonderful to come back here and read the things all the folks who were 3RR Regulars when we were here on ST have to say- I miss you all.

Anyway, I still owe you that last comment- I'll probably do it in a PM over the weekend.  Glad to hear that things have lightened up a bit for you.

Take care.

David

nice pics, again! those pics really makes it look easy to make it so beautiful, but to do it yourself is pretty hard..

like your idea of a 'service' tunnel. usually service tunnels are part of railway tunnels, for escape routes and maintenance.

looking forward for more pics!

I really hope that the RHW team will come up with a new version that'll cure the conflict, because I really like using it in fact I find it more lifelike that the in-game one.quote>

They are. It's coming "soon".

Wow, this is very nice. I never thought Anorien was that spread out, there's lots of greenery. It's a little different from your usual, but that doesn't matter - it still looks great! Hmm, I do wish I didn't lose all my textures for the cycleways... :/

Ooops, missed one too 15.gif Unforgivable 26.gif3.gif

How do you come up with all this stuff? It's always a pleasure to see how you detail every update of yours. Even simple things, become great things after you put your hands on it.

See you again soon

PS: Hope that your weather had improved by now. My regards to everyone at home. 4.gif

As always, a great update. In particular, I wanted to compliment you on 13. You've made a great creek but made it so much better with the reef additions. The second outcropping looks so natural: the logs on top indicate higher water level potentials, the grass around it just seems to be taking advantage of the area, all in all it is great. Also, good job with the service area. It looks good, and fits right in. Almost as if it had been there for a while and had developed over time.

Hi, John, I've done the deed, some pics are in the SUYA thread.  I will do the exit and another bridge maybe sometime later, and I have an Observatory themed pictoral essay that I may post in the scenic thread, dunno.  I know you quite often check on Tuesday morning, so I hope this isn't too hard on your old eyes first thing.  46.gif  I'll do a regular reply later.

Hi John,

All is going well considering I am experiencing some frustration with a canal I am building in one of my cities.  I recently went back to virgin terrain for the third time, so hopefully this will be the "charm".  I just can't seem to obtain the look I want.  The weather in Denver has been really nice, mostly in the mid 60's (F).  That was until I decided to wash my car.  We got just enough rain to make the car wet so the dust would stick to it.  Such is life...

This was a great update.  The service tunnel looks amazing, and your "detailing" is second to none.  The crew station next to the railway looks good too, but it looks like the rail doesn't cross the street.  I'd hate to see a train derailment in Anorien.  Looks like Shorty Burger found a great location next to the highway.  I bet they make great shakes and malts.

Take care,

James

Sorry John, I am a bit late in responding I became 39 yesterday so AVR was not directly on my mind (I know I should be ashamed 9.gif)

It's almost spring here in the Netherlands according to the local newspaper which shows some nice photo's of de Keukenhof:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keukenhof

I do not know what they call spring but looking at the dark clouds outside and seeing (thank god not feeling) those 1 cm hailstones smashing down from heaven I wonder where has spring gone. Certainly not to Canada judging from your stories.

You are right about the use of complementary colours it must be something natural. If you want to see my kids just ahev a look at: SC4D at dedgren show us your Children thread: https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=586.0

Anyway back to AVR.

Great service tunnel, never seen one over here though wonder if it is something North-American.

The service area turned out pretty well. I like it.

Ha, ha talk about tying some loose ends. I do remember you stating on going to use ploppable water. It turned out pretty good although I still think thesides are too steep for such a natural creek I would think canals (I know said it before) would be a better choice. Nag, nag, nag.

So Exxon decided to close the old gas station. Well where do the car drivers go then to fill their tanks?

That Shorty Burgers is almost never shown in any CJ. I like the fact that you dare to use it, ha, ha, ha.29.gif It fits well there 44.gif

Take care John.

Hi John!

The texture bug is the same with the eLTrain2Subway, GLR2subway etc Lots. zooming in and out sometimes solves the problem (but unfortunately not always - another unfinished string from EA ... ). 27.gif

About the service tunnel - I would think of three four possibilites:

1. Geological reason. The slope may be instable or has some problems with soild water. You can see IRL if a slope is instable if the trees didn't grow up straight as they normally do but seem to make a (more or less) small kink - because then the slope is moving. Trees always grow straight upward and turn if necessairy!

I don't agree with Yoman that the position of the tunnel should be closer to the tunnel. Au contrair especially when you want to look after soil water you will need to do it in undisturbed ground - the ground around the bridge support however  is heavily disturbed.

BTW If the slope is very critical there may be more service tunnels hidden in the woods ...

2. Military Reason 1:

In the (not so) good old times a lot of bridges have been "secured" by making them ready for detonation in case the enemy is approaching. Under the pillows may be hard to reach under enemy fire and a detonated support should do it, too ...

3. Miltary Reason 2

Especially in Germany and France strategic important bridges were equipped with  AA and antitank bunkers in between the Waorld Wars

4. Military Reason 4

Due to the heavy air attacks over Germany in 1944/45 a lot of bridges where equipped with air raid shelters since bridges were (one of the many) favourite attack targets of the allied air force. Since neither Canado nor the USA were under such heavy air attack like Germany in 1944/45 I rather don't think though that this fits very well ...

Nice work with Jeroni's seasonal trees. I recently started using the, too (you know me, I am not the fastest ... ). BTW have you ever tried to combined Jeroni's and PEG'S sesonal trees? I was rather surprised by their effect - the rather dense but low PEG seasonal woods are great for small sots and skirts for the forrest whereas Jeronis trees do make a great wood ...

About the canyon .. actually it reminds more of a kanal, too - maybe because the water surface is too smooth - the water in canyons is more shallow but fast with a lot of turbulences.

A suggestion for the acces road to the water tower: Unless the water tower does not need road access I would use dirt tracks there .... 30.gif

Finally about the SC4 Plugin Manager: Use it. The only way to protect your cities of becoming corrupt is making regularly backups onm CD/DVD.

And another thing: Goaskin posted on the German simforum.de that the last NAm will be the last "NAM 1.0".  He said there will be some bugfixes especially for the RHW but the next NAM will not be compatable with the current one and that there will be bigger preparations necessary for converting cities from the "NAM 1.0" to the "NAM 2.0".... if you want to avoid them - I just say Pluginmanager ... 2.gif

Take care

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits

Made it nearly seventy days

Losin' weight without speed, eatin' sunflower seeds

Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays

But at night I'd have these wonderful dreams

Some kind of sensuous treat

Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat

But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)

Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)

Not too particular not too precise (paradise)

I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise...

That's Jimmy Buffet, comin' in off the request line,  talkin' about that great American diet staple, makes me so hungry I think I'll head over to Shortyburger when my shift is over at midnight, just a little while now.  But first, I'd like to play a few more requests and dedications.  That's right, give me a call during the commercial, I'll find it in the huge abyss that is KLIV's music library, and get it on for you.  And we'll be right back...

John, you probably weren't that into Jimmy Buffet either, but when I saw the Shortyburger I knew what was in the cards.  19.gif

I liked the unusual aspects of this update.  You come up with some things that are not seen in a lot of CJ's but are definitely present in real towns.  What a novel idea for the tunnel, too, sounds like a thing you would see as well.  How neat that we can always ask Bernhard--he is a wealth of knowledge.  Nice how you've done the incline fence behind Shorty's, you've removed the texture, haven't you?  I did that to some fence lots as well, they are indispensable.

Yes, it is a wonder how the youngsters can bounce up and scoot around after recovering.  My son, however, is 24 and in nursing school, but can still recover enough to play WoW.  20.gif

I meant your dog looked to have a big heart, but sounds like he was literally large, too.  Pets add so much to life, I hope to have another dog soon.  Is Scotty gone as well?  8.gif

I've been virtuous with regards to YouTube, and have been starting my new region, Nibishokee County, (made-up Native American sounding name) a northwestern US region on the nice Pacific Rim map by NHP.  I hope to have a journal ready by fall, and since my work is settling down I'm reassuming my leadership role of the drama team at our church.  So YouTube will have to come in a distant last in priority.  I'm glad you had a more normal week after a busy weekend.

No worry for the long post, I enjoy reading about your activities.  Take care, give wifey a hug, son a back pat, and Ozzy a rub for me.

Gilligone - The headwaters of Nemonos

    Hi Giligone,

That's why I don't like the in-games highway and exits, they don't look like the one we have here in RL. IMO the RHW is much more lifelike than the Maxis one. Up until june 2006 I was playing SC4 an average of two hours per day, thus the big pic reserve... but since then my playing time dropped drastically mostly due to my guitar playing, and recently dropped to zero because of the RHW/NewNAM bug..

    See you.

    Yaptszwai

No need to be sorry Yaptszwai, everyone come to Anduin Valley at his own pace and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Glad you like the tech shots, and to know that you learn things while watching AVR makes it worthwhile!

Hope you'll chose well for your university courses, and that you'll enjoy yourself there. And yes pressure is part of RL, but very often pressure is a necessary evil that pushes us to accomplish our goals.

Always good to read you Yaptszwai see you soon!

    Take care

    Owen (Yoman3) - Ankara reloaded

    Hey Owen,

Well I hope that the RHW team will come up with a fix before my reserve is dry!

You're saying that you were able to place cycleways on a bridge! That I would like to see!

I'm still experimenting with the ploppable water, not always satisfied with the final look, but the experimenting itself is fun, so I won't complain!

Right you are, Shorty's is a Maxis Landmark. Yep I've tried the trestle bridge, but in this particular setup I wanted a more "old" looking bridge.

About Ankara, I've made the correction in the link!

    See you!

    Bow River Valley

    Hi Phil,

Those are the things I enjoy most, taking one little setup and trying to get the most out of it, just by adding small details, fences, bins, benches etc... as in RL.

Good to see you my friend, hoping the weather in the west is better than ours!

    Take care.

    -John

    Fallon144

    Hey Fallon,

Thanks, and about the zoomed out pic, I'll see what I can do..

    Take care

    Bat - Capporth City

    Hey Bat,

    Thanks man!

    Schulmanator - Schulmania

    Hey Schul,

I agree with you about the ped walkways, and the vehicle-less feature... gives us more freedom in the cities design. The only downside was the animation of the pedestrian traffic, I used some of those tiles, but there was so much ped traffic, that it was becoming unplayable! I had to remove them... Hope that they'll come with a middle of the road (or should I say middle of the ped-walkways...) solution!

Had a snowstorm (again) last saturday that left us yet another 40cm of snow, glad my snow blower was repaired by then!

But hey! spring is just around the corner so! I guess we can be a little patient!

    Take care

David (dedgren) - Three Rivers Region - MD

    Hi David,

Well, still experimenting with the PW, not satisfied yet but getting there is half the fun as "they" say! (By the way, who are "they", I don't know if "they" have an office in some obscure alley!)

You, being in a hurry! hehehe... that'll be the day! Never saw someone as patient as you gamewise... for the rest we would have to ask your wife, I know mine don't think I am when I'm driving!!!!

And please don't worry about short posts! They are better than none! (And I"m certainly not the one who can give lessons on posting these last weeks!)

Last week was really more "relax" than usual, less urgent deadlines, more time to do some due maintenance on my Mac network.

Was thinking about your old Toyota Cruiser the other day, my wife is really decided to trade in her old Corolla for a brand new FJ Cruiser, talk about change! Never thought I'd see the day she would like to have a "truck"! Must be all those snow storms....

What about you, still buried in snow? If you need help just say the word I'll pack the snowblower and I'll give you a hand! WINK

    Take care my friend!

    -John

    tommiej

    Hey Tommiej,

I wouldn't say that it's hard, all you need is a little patience, and a lot of redoing! When you try it for the first time! Lot's of trial and error, but in the end it's worthwhile.

    Thanks for stoppin' by!

    Take care

Daniel - Shadow_Assassin - Ensenada - That City in the east

    Hi Daniel,

I sure hope so! But as I said before I'll never complain, because I really think that the RHW team is doing an incredible job as it is!

You lost your textures! That's a shame my friend, after so much work!

    See you soon

    Take care

    Rayden - Little Italy

    Hola Silvio,

How I come up with it? Don't ask, I don't even know myself, I should write down all the ideas that comes through my head because I loose at least half of them, one idea always pushes the other one out! hehehe...

    Take care amigo.

    -John

P.S. I guess you would like to be here, or more precisely visit our ski resorts, last saturday we received another 40cm of fresh snow!...

    IDS2

Parkland... well I guess it could look like it. I just placed a "lot" of trees, and they can go a long way in improving the general look of a setup!

    Take care

    Jacky (jacqulina) - Paradise Falls

    Hey jacky,

Well, you know cats... they are their own self, nothing we can do to change them!

Happy to say that the workload as slacken a bit last week, we're now on a more "normal" workload, the good side of a "rush" period, is that after it you appreciate more the regular pace! Ozzy's still with us until this saturday, then he'll go to his new home, my cousin is taking possession of his new house this weekend.

This last week was indeed more relax than the others, still a bit tired (sure could use some of the younger kids stamina there! wink) but we'll get over it. Not ready to retire yet hehehe...

Hoping all is going well on your side my friend.

    Regards

    -John

    Constantinos - Voulpiotis

    Hey Constantinos,

    Thanks man!

    Take care

    Threestooges – Matt

    Hi Matt,

As I said to David, I'm still experimenting with PW and, though the stream does look better than before, I'm still not satisfied with it... I know I know I'm picky! But I guess with time, hopefully, it'll get better.... not my pickyness, (that is hopeless) but my streams...

On the service area topic, at first I was not sure of what I could place there, took me some time to chose that solution.... in the end it proved to be an adequate call.

    Good to see you Matt!

    Take care

    -John

    Liv - Livin in Sim

    Hey Liv,

    PART ONE -

    **mumbling while reading her post...**

hey! pics! wait a minute, I'll be back....

**sound of footsteps fading in the distance....**

a minute then two then five....

**sound of footsteps comming closer again**

    **panting sounds...**

Blaming me hey! Well I'll accept the blame gladly! those pictures are simply awesome!

Everything is so well crafted! The first one showcases your attention to details! The small plaza in front of the church is a great idea! This way it serve both the church and the Town Hall...

Everything is contributing to the small town ambiance, the Farm Bureau just alongside a tractor dealer, the dirt parking lot...

Just love the Presbytarian church sector!

The rest is up to par, and that last dusk shot! WOW

Well I guess your in now, people will pester you for more!

And to be sure they will....

**sound of a bullhorn squeaking and feeding back**

one two one two **is this thing on??**

PEOPLE! HEY EVERYONE! PLEASE DON'T MISS LIV PICS ON THE SHOW US YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT THREAD! HERE'S THE LINK CLICK HERE!

    **turning off the contraption**

What do you think? was that subtle enough! wink

And don't worry about my (hey! they're not that old!) eyes...

    PART TWO -

    Liv - The sequel

Right you are, I must admit, to my shame, that I don't know Jimmy Buffet at all...

Went to Wikipedia and read about him, sounds like my kind of person, he even pilots planes!

And a song named Cheeseburger in paradise.... hummmmm.... (looking forward to using my ol' BBQ! if only the snow could melt!)

As to do unusual things in AVR, what can I say, I just let my crazy ideas lead me... sometimes the result is not what I want...

I think I removed the texture on these fences...

About the youngster stamina, I wish I could borrow some right now... I'm battling with something that looks like a 24 hour flu or something, my head feels like a ball a twine... (a fuzzy one at that!)...

Yes Scotty's gone as well, and as much as I would like to have another dog, I think I'll wait until my (still several years ahead) retirement.

Hehehe.... virtuous! **cough... cough...** Sorry there, didn't mean to laugh.... just something caught in my throat! wink

I really like the native name you come out with... Nibishokee... sounds like Okeefenokee, I remember reading a mystery novel while in school and the action took place there... spooky place... well... at least for a 16 or 17 year old (way back then) kid.

I'll follow your CJ/MD with attention when you decide to give it a go!

I think I inadvertently mixed the recipients of the hug and rub... and didn't get any complaint, go figure!

    Take care my friend

    John

    hondo42769 - James

    Hi James,

Don't despair! hehehe... getting there is half the fun anyways!

ANd as for getting the look we want, join the club! I'm very often in that situation, it seems that we must often compromise between looks and functionality in this game!

Weather wise, we had another snowstorm who left us 40cm of snow (around 14 to 15 inches) saturday, and we wake up this morning with yet another 3 inches on the car this morning (Tuesday)... I guess this winter's last call! The rail not crossing the street! **examining the pics....**

Hey! right you are.... I think it was due to the portal... and if I remember correctly I fixed that at a later date... but you just planted a doubt in my mind so I'll go and look to be sure that I did! Talk about a maintenance crew not doing his job! and right in front of the crew station!

    Sheesh!

Speaking of burgers, I just can't wait to put my old BBQ into service for the summer! Hummmmm.... the smell of a good barbecued burger! **looking out the window at the snow still falling --sigh--  **

Now you've done it! I'll be nostalgic all day long! Oh well..

    Take care my friend.

    -John

    Alex - homeandaway (THRICE)

    Hi Alex,

I'm very well thank you, couldn't be more. Life is good.

    And here's more pics.

Hoping you like them as well!

    Take care

    Nik-nik

39! That remind me one anecdote, a cousin of mine on my 39th birthday gave me a coffee mug on which it is written "39, time to recycle" (that was some **cough cough** years ago),

being a tad on the stubborn side, I kept it preciously so I could return the favor, so this year he will turn 39 also, guess what he will receive as a birthday present! hehehe... I can be patient sometimes!

Happy birthday (a bit late but better than never!) my friend!

Spring is supposedly around the corner here also, but winter is battling fiercely before giving up!

And my guess is, children not being bound by prejudice expression wise, they create more freely than any adult.

I went to see David's thread, and saw Josh and also your three musketeers! looking at Merijn I remembered the yoghurt/cereal/carpet story you told me a while ago.... hehehe he sure looks like a handful!

About the service tunnel, I saw things that looked like this but I honestly don't know what their "real" purpose is. Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps Bernhard could help us on this. (---- EDITED --- He did, look at his post above the update, as far as I'm concerned I'll go with explanation No:1)

About that creek being abrupt, what about this... being my stubborn self I have to show this to you wink

    Canyon Ste-Anne

I roughly based myself on this canyon (which is about a 45 minutes ride from Québec), if only the ploppable water would accept more abrupt grades!

Here's one pic taken from this site.

    plateforme1.jpg

And this one taken from above

    roche2002071806cl9.jpg

I should be a tourist guide! hehehe...

You see it's like a cultural battle, you being from a country that have a rather flat landscape, (I'd love to bike in your country!) thus the canals... and me coming from a place where the landscape change from place to place! a simple example of this fact: on the north shore of the St-Lawrence river you'll find beaches, and I mean "real" beaches with fine sand and dunes and all that (the water is rather cold though!), and on the south shore you'll have mostly pebble beaches (what the French call "galets") save some exceptions...

The only canal in Quebec is the Canal Lachine , at some place it looks like a regular one, and at some others it's so big that it looks more like a river than a canal! So having no RL experience of canals I tend to go towards what I'm familiar with. And please continue to nag... I find it challenging! wink

About Shorty's burger, I was just going through my plugins and was looking for inspiration when I stumbled across Shorty's, and I plopped it, and I liked it... as simple as that, some Maxis landmarks are not so bad.

    Again happy birthday Niek!

Regards to your family... and you too!

    Take care

    John

Welcome to Anduin Valley Shanghai kid,

Bernhard (Nardo) - Urland a (mostly) rural coastline

    Hi Bernhard,

Hey, many thanks for the tunnel explanations, I'm sure that the one I've seen so far must be then related to explanation No:1, I remember seeing very often curved trees on river banks, so it really does make sense!

I do use Jeroni's and Peg's trees, and I agree, they complete each other very well!

Hehehe... on the canyon/canal topic, see my answer to Niek, I just inspired myself from this sector, and I could also, and it's a shame that I never took pictures of it, talk about one canyon, that was where I was working as a forest ranger way up north, that was so steep and deep that there was snow in it all year long! But it was not a river that ran in it, just a small brook though, the canyon was perhaps 15 to 30 feet wide no more, it looked like if some giant axe had made a dent in the rocky plateau!

It would be great to have flowing water in the game so our creeks would have a more natural look!

The dirt track is a good suggestion.

Thanks for the info about what's coming on the NAM topic! And I guess that I'll have to try the Plugin manager sooner or later, I guess that in some ways we're both "slow adopters" of new things in the game!

My only worry is more related to the fact that if, for the sake of running the game faster in Anörien, I prevent the RHW mod from loading when I play Anörien, the game will show me a dialog window saying that there's a missing plugin, and when I'll save the city after working in it without the RHW, will the information about the missing plugin will still be in the save game, so when I decide to open it WITH the plugin reinstallled, the RHW will show up. Or will I have to replop the whole thing because the info about the RHW would have been removed from the save file... Perhaps I should experiment on a back up file before doing it...

So there will be a NAM 2.0.... interesting and you say it won't be compatible with NAM 1.0, Can't wait to see that! An about the fact that it won't be compatible, well, we'll just have to start new projects with it.

Again Bernhard, thanks for your expertise in the tunnel matter!

    Take care

    -John

    Shana - Laurie -Edelstein County-

    Hi Shana,

Glad you appreciated it, as I said, the tunnel is something I just mimicked from something I saw in RL, not knowing what it was for... but reading Bernhard (Nardo69) post I realized I guessed "almost" correctly!

    Take care

It's because you commented three times... not that's a bad thing. 3.gif

    Anyways, John...

    Hmm...

That sawmill definitely fits in perfectly.

But I have one small problem. You know that rail underpass (where you used jeronij's street underpasses) - it doesn't fit right. Are you able to use something else that fits better?

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you finish the terraforming on that river.

Hey John, nice work again. The sawmill it's getting really nice, looking forward to see that part finished. And you're right, I am envying you, and I wish I could be there, either on the snow resorts or around where you live. Just being on a snowed landscape would be enought to me to enchant my soul. Btw, my hunt for a good flight deal to the States/Canada next winter has began. If I find a flight around 500 euros or less, you can be sure I'll be visiting you and David. Coffee is on me 2.gif

See you next week my friend.

    Cheers

    Silvio
