I'll try to explain what this thread is about...
I remember that when I joined Simtropolis there were about 30-40k members, and now we have more than 100k6.gif...
Obviously with so many people around, it is impossible to know or even recognize some of them3.gif...
Like in the picture thread! I see their faces and I don't know who they are...I look at their avatar and username and I'm still clueless!!42.gif...
Then I go...Oh yeah! They are new! ⌐⌐'...
So...to which members do you feel more related? or you think are from the same generation as you are.

I suspect I came in the second wave (if there was such a thing) between years 2 and 3 and came to management under SkiGeek's ascension.  I'm hoping that despite the game's age that each subsequent year will be SimTropolis's golden year!9.gif

Masher...I am definetly with you in youe generation, or a little before then at least...Probably right there with you though...Ever since my recent return to activity on the site I have noticed so many new faces that don't even know who I am...I am like...What the heck?! Someone doesn't know of the infamous dev? :O...

I would say my generation consists of people about the join date of you...early to mid 2004...I can't remember all the names that have come and passed...but I do see a lot of people gone, and tons of new people...

2004 has come and passed...the generations never last...wake me up when confusion ends

Ohh...I think it would be cool to name the generations too...3.gif We have easily defined generations...Luminaries, Senior Members, Classic SimTropolians, The New Generation, and Newbies seem to be the best I can do...it seems like mid to late 2005 was a big growth time for the site, and with it came a lot of changes...Strange how things come and go, eh?

I guess my generation as classified by Dev above might be The New Generation, maybe even Classic SimTropolians considering A) I'm now an annuarian and B) I lurked here before registering. I also agree with Dev that lots of things changed fall 2005: we saw new organizations form (SCJU, SHS, etc.), the rise to noteworthiness by members like Compromise and Voar Tok and such, and a huge surge in members. They make me feel old when it comes to ST membership!

Hmmm....I have never ever even considered a generation concept....

Well I was a lurker when the site was around 20k...I joined a short time ago...about a year ago,but a lurked almost twice aslong as that....

Well lets say this I was here when DEV's reign of Terror probably just begun....17.gif

I have the same problem as masher, lots of new people I don't know. Jaquelina has 5000 posts, Vandy is a moderate, and until a couple months ago I never new that either of them existed. I joined when there were about 28000 members, I remember when we reached 30,000.

I post more often at Skyscrapercity now, but still come here every day. Even though I dont know half of you...at least I don't suffer from delusional fame like SOMEONE I know!

Hmmm....Well I think now that we kinda have an idea about who should go where then lets come up with some catchy titles for generations...

like every 10,000 would be ageneration until we got around 70k or 80k...anyone above that should be a NEWB through and through....

I proclaim my generation the Rude generation....

Why...well many of the peeps around my time of joining were under a more Strict adminship....and many of us spoke up and I bet many of us were considered rude....

lol

Of course there was also the great Rudeboy.....but he joined many moons ago....

So what exaclty do you call the folks from before 2002? old timers?

Ok...anyway...I'm from 2004 so I'm guessing I'm classic SimTropolians....but then again I'm also extremely regular so...I dunno....but lets do it like this...

I remember...

When Simtropolis hit 50,000 members

When we swiched to ST 4.0

When rybolten proposed to Samantha

When Palm Point just started

When dudyconstructor was a Chat operator

I've been a member since...well you can see the info under my avatar. Like Cjah, I was a lurker? for awhile, then lost interest for awhile, and recently picked the game back up again.  But searching through the forums always gave me the info I needed without asking. Also, I remained a lurker because I wanted to avoid replies like this one from:

look for: @ten1902: This is something for professional modders, so as a $%&^! you won't be able to use it anyway.
45.gif'); height=15 alt=Insert smilie 45.gif src=https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/45.gif width=15 border=0>
So, in answer to the main question, I feel like a $%&^! when using the forums, but also remember when some of the oldtimers were trying to figure out how all the SC4 C++ libraries worked in order for them to create the slick looking mods they have today.30.gif'); height=15 alt=Insert smilie 30.gif src=https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/30.gif width=15 border=0>
To Cjah(if you're listening): Thank you very much for your encouragement, it seems that you were the only one who answered my question. By the way, Volume 2 of Railyard and Railspurs textures is now released. These texture packs would still be unreleased without your encouragement.2.gif'); height=15 alt=Insert smilie 2.gif src=https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif width=15 border=0>

I suppose clinically there are a number of ways of looking at the generations. I came in a v3 of the site when it was all yellow/red/black and I loved the look'n'feel. Then we changed to the new blue/grey format and it took quite some time to get used to (like Audi's; I think they look like crap when they bring out a new model, but they always grow on me).

My main focus is what's now the STEX and the custom content. When I first joined we didn't have the BAT. Custom lot's ruled the roost and it was all CSX (and associated) and MrBisonM. Then the BAT came out and changed our world. I remember the great philippbo with his early assistance. There was the BATT squad, most who have since left. Then the BSC was formed, followed by NDEX and a few other teams. There were the huge barneys between some elements, with the BSC banned at one stage. Early on the STEX was mostly skyscrapers and some freaky buildings. Now Simgoobers the king of the STEX, with every imaginable building/lot.

Personally I think there has been a large turnover of folks in the last six months. There's a lot of stuff on the STEX from newer members. We've seen the download rates drop off. I think many of the older members have found other games to play, but the fact that we're still growing means people are still discovering and enjoying the game (perhaps all those copies are in the discount bin at Fry's). I hope people keep getting enjoyment from the game, this site and the custom content for years to come.

In 2003 my five year old daughter was three years old!9.gif

I miss the Milkman in Off Topic too w/out having met him.  I also miss Phillipbo as well.

I guess Cyber Space really is different; it's hard to fathom four years as being all that old in Real Life.

I ascended?   I imagine that refers to a Daniel Jackson type ascension  3.gif

As to the generation thing, I just think of myself as being from the class of Spring '03.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I remeber both of those quite well!!

I also remeber release of the bat, back when we had the top 10 posters, when I actually posted in places other than off topic, before my ego, BEFORE MY EGO!!!!!, and the first conversation I had on here.

It had to do with weather. It involved jelly rolls. 1.gif

I'll answer questions in chat whenever you really want, but I won't give out too much...the management of the site is not something that needs to be discussed too much.

But yeah...those were interesting times...Ahh the satires! How fun! 3.gif
