  1. Ever heard of the Constitution...

In regards to making Election Day a holiday: I don't know about the rest of the country but in California, employers are required by law to give their employees enough time off to vote (usually an hour or two). Couldn't this be implemented in every state?

  9. What makes a 'City' a city..?

In California, as in Texas according to how_deep, we have Cities and Census Designated Places. Cities have a city government, fire department, and police department. CDPs have no local government and rely on their county for fire and police (Sheriff). I live in a CDP with a population of 4,800, but just a few miles from me is a city of 10,000. Just a few miles further is another CDP (not city!) of 25,000. So it really, at least in CA, depends on city government, police department, and fire department...not really on population.
  10. Gasoline Prices

$3.40s here in CA, but they just said on the news that it could be below $3 within the next two weeks...sounds alright.
  11. Eagle Eye

Don't believe Rottentomatoes!! I saw it last night with some friends and it was awesome! My heart was pounding through the entire movie and I recommend it to everyone!
  12. The seventh anniversary of 9/11

I was in sixth grade in Northern California on Sept. 11, 2001, and I remember the teachers talking about another (possibly) hijacked plane headed for San Francisco that the FAA couldn't locate. I just remember being really scared because the flightpath from the East Coast to SF took all the aircraft right over our city. I realize today that even if there had been another plane, the chances of it crashing near my city were astronomically small, but still, I remember how scared I was.

  14. Unofficial Disorder Venting/Education Thread

I sometimes believe that I have CDO...It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order...like they're supposed to be. No, but in all seriousness...I get so frustrated with other people when they do things "wrong" even though they do it in a perfectly acceptable way, whatever it may be.
  15. Might be moving to LA!!

LA is an okay place sometimes...I've been there probably 10 times (I live in Northern California) and I always enjoy it when I go there. If you're moving to the West Side of Downtown, you get into the really nice neighborhoods of Westwood, Century City, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica. Then again, you also will be near the not so nice areas of Pico Union and Hollywood (only a tiny part of it is nice). Also, for someone as far away as you, "LA" could mean anywhere in Southern California, right? I know that's what it means when we say it here...Also, the pollution is bad, but you get that with a lot of major cities. Traffic is not really any worse than the SF Bay Area, I think. So pretty much it depends on where you will be living. You can be driving through a neighborhood with million dollar homes, cross an intersection and see hundreds of homeless...If your dad is working for Cathay Pacific, I assume he'll need to be near LAX...(crummy airport, btw). All in all, I believe that LA is what you make it. Have a positive attitude and you'll probably enjoy it.
