I'm hoping to get some good answers, I'm new to the site so if its been brough up before,  I'm unaware of  any postings.

First, Ive been trying to get SimCity 4 work on my new computer with windows 11, I've tried all the suggestions I could find, but none have worked. Can anyone tell me how to get SimCity 4 working?n I still am able to play on my old computer with the windows 8 on it, but I'd like to have it on the new computer with the windows 11.

Second, I've tried many times to get the cheat code moolah to work on the game but nothing happens, is there a way to get that code to work, everything else to work, just not the moolah code.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hiya, @Natana. Welcome to Simtropolis. *:)

Which version of the game are you trying to install? (Steam? GOG? Other?)

Install the Extra Cheats DLL first

Second, put in directly your Plugins folder located either in the Documents or game installation folder (for GOG, C:\GOG Games\SimCity 4). Don't put it in any subfolders. Third, run the game, enter a city, and press Ctrl+X on your keyboard. Type "moolah" then space and then the amount. For instance, moolah 100000 will add 100k to your city fund. Don't forget to save the game if you want to make changes persist.

I  had it installed from EA and GOG, but same result, the game starts but it crashes right after the intro.

Have you now followed the guide @Ulisse Wolf posted above? (And GOG is the absolute best choice to use.)

What GPU do you have? Are you using any antivirus? Did you do the verification of the game files?

    whats a GPU?

Why don't Google lol? Just kidding, a GPU is a graphical processing unit. Every device, including those marketed as APU or not including GPU, still includes a GPU known as an integrated GPU. You can play SC4 pretty nicely on an Intel integrated GPU (most common type of iGPU) with SC4. You may need a wrapper for newer Intel graphics. But it runs smoothly with no issues.

For other GPUs, including dedicated ones, wrapper may not be enough, as per my experience. You may have to configure both your Graphics Rules.sgr and Video Cards.sgr. Also, you may have to update/downgrade your GPU driver and force your driver to use the integrated graphics, especially if you're playing on a laptop. For configuring those files, Ulisse has covered that in his dgvoodoo bundle. Unfortunately for updating driver and forcing to use iGPU, you're best to google that, along with your graphics card model.

For Nvidia, you can download the latest driver on Nvidia's website. Select your device type, GPU family (it's almost always Geforce except if you have other variants), and GPU model. Hit Download and after that, install the driver like you would with other programs. It's pretty similar to AMD.

To force an app to use your integrated GPU, you have 2 options: on Windows settings or using Nvidia control panel. You can accomplish the first method by entering Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics and pick SimCity 4.exe (if it's not exist, run it first). Then select Power saving (your GPU name). Save the setting and run SC4 again. On Nvidia control center, open that up select 3D settings -> Manage 3D settings -> Program settings and pick SimCity 4.exe. Select Integrated graphics and hit Apply. Close the control panel and run SC4 again.

If you want to see what's your GPU, you have two ways (well, three, if you count System Information): task manager and dxdiag. The first way is to open up the task manager by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc on the keyboard, hit More Details (Windows 10 only), open Performance, and select GPU (number). You'll able to see the GPU model and the memory usage. The second way is to open up the search bar on the taskbar and type "dxdiag". Once you got an icon with yellow X at the center in a blue circle, hit that. Go ahead to Display to see your GPU model, the amount of video RAM, and even the driver files being used along with the version number. Another way is to use System Information. Type sysinfo and run it, go over Components -> Display and you'll see everything related to your GPU. Really, the best way to view GPU is to download GPU-Z and install it.

Unfortunately, there are devices, especially laptop that have something called mux switch (look it up) which controls which GPU should be used. Unlike single GPU setup, this is entirely dependent on GPU usage, which SC4 doesn't immediately use till the intro ends. So, you have to switch it up manually. You can only do this in Nvidia control panel (or similar) and your gaming control panel (think Asus' Armoury Crate). After opening the control panel, enter Manage display mode and select Optimus. Hit Apply and run SC4 again. You should be using your integrated GPU instead of whatever additional GPU your laptop is shipped with. If you're using the gaming control panel, find the setting with the wording of Select graphics used or GPU operation or something similar and select Integrated graphics only. Note that you can use the same setting to use the dedicated GPU only, just it differs in the option used obviously.
