I just recently now saved my game by accident, by pressing ctrl + S thinking I would plop up a school (realized the next second that it was ctrl + K). As soon as I pressed S, a small window in the middle of the screen came up saying "game has been saved", giving me no choice in the matter as to be sure I wanted to save it.

I haven't played SC for a long time (played frequently during 2020/early 2021), and I was just trying a few new mods on a default in-game city (in the region Berlin to be exact), so fortunately, nothing severe happen. But this means that I spent all this time on a serious project, not knowing I could've completely ruined it any given second, just by pressing S instead of K or any other letter. I often fast-forwarded a few years planning ahead, only to go back to the last stop now knowing what to do next.

I find this unacceptable. I thought ctrl + S only applied for Microsoft Word, Excel and other similar programs. I have no memory of it ever applying to a game. Anyway, it totally should not be there, period. I find it utterly threatening to serious projects. Perhaps there's a mod fixing it, much like the mod warning me about saving the game right at the same time as leaving it (that one's been very useful).

I'm not aware of any such mod (but there could be). It was quicker for me to just whip one up for you than do a thorough search:

No Keyboard City Tile Save Allowed by Cori.dat

P.S. We changed the topic title so it'll be easier to find if anyone is searching for the same thing. *;)

    I just tested this mod that you created for me just now, and it worked. I can't be grateful enough, Cori. You really should make a mod page for it and not let it be just a file on this post. I find it to be one of the very most important mods for SC, period.

    Woot! I'm so glad it does what you want. *:)

    Note: It also prevents Ctrl+Alt+S which is the Quick Save (that doesn't update the region thumbnail image). Should it do that as modded or only the Ctrl+S?

    For reference, I simply extracted the KEYCFG file (0xA2E3D533-6A231EAA-6A9362EF) and altered two lines by putting a semicolon in front of each of them. (That makes the game consider them as a remark instead of code.)

    Like this now:

    ;Control S               = 0x6a935e36   "Save City"
    ;Control Alt S = 0x6a935e37 "Save City, Quick"

    I'd never thought of making such a mod before, but since I only save by mousing to the menu for it, I've kept it in my plugins along with CB's Save Warning which you mentioned. I can imagine there might be a few other peeps who do testing in their cities and would not want to accidentally save.

    A STEX entry for it would be fine with me. RL is still going to be quite busy for me for a long while so I've asked @Cyclone Boom to add it. *:ohyes:

    Excuse my late answer.

    Well, in my opinion, the mod should disable both ctrl+S and ctrl+alt+S, now that the latter doesn't update the region thumbnail (which I'd find catastrophic also).

    Some people however might like having a quick save, so for them, the latter might be suitable (I'd rather not have it though). But in that case, the thumbnail needs to be upgraded for them as well. I don't think anybody would like a false thumbnail.

    With that said, thank you for also disabling the latter, now that it would've eventually caught up with me as well.

    If you don't want to get fancy about 1-4 lines of autohotkey ...

    #IfWinActive, SimCity 4,

    ^s::

    !s::

    The above kills the modal combination of "s" within the game.  To remap ...

    ^s::r

    Make a road ... if you want one.  Very easy to do, and works for anything.
