Turning off the automatic updates didn't make a difference. I downloaded Update 638 and the above window keeps popping up and I'm still having the CTD issue (Access Violation).

Would it be a good idea to go back to the AVG Antivirus Free Edition?

Now a question comes to me spontaneously. Which SC4 are you using? The Origin version?

    Hiya!

After installing the EP1 update to version 1.1.638.0, did you then also next download and install the Nightlights Update to version 1.1.640.0?  The pop-up message does say that both updates in sequence are required to use SC4Fix, but your follow-up message does not mention doing the second update step to version 1.1.640.0.

On a different angle, if removing Windows updates somehow now brought this pop-up warning when you previously didn't have it while using SC4Fix before, are you maybe doing more than uninstalling Windows updates and instead actually rolling back your system to some restore point that is also rolling back your game installation?

As for the crashing problem, I have a suspicion that something in your plugins may still be creating grief, and given earlier posts in this thread on the problems, it remains a strong possibility that NAM is somehow still not correctly installed, especially as updating the retail disc version of the game to at least Version 1.1.638.0 was a stated compatibility requirement for NAM 42 and has been at least since since NAM 32.  At this point, it may not hurt to just simply bite the bullet and reinstall SimCity 4 so that you don't have any lingering issues from previous attempts at updating, rolling back, or fixing, and so that we all know exactly what version you are at and exactly what changes have actually been made to the game.  Steps to follow might be:

    1.  Bring Windows 7 and your anti-virus back to fully updated and stable states, and then implement one of the workarounds for the Windows 7 SecuROM DRM disc issue created by update KB3086255 (enabling the driver via command prompt setting is the easiest solution).

    2.  Uninstall or remove NAM 42, then move or copy your current regions and remaining custom content into some other temporary backup folder far away from the normal SimCity directory and documents, and then uninstall SimCity 4.  Delete any straggling files or folders that may be left over in Program Files and My Documents after uninstalling SimCity.

    3.  Reinstall SimCity 4 fresh as an Administrator.  With its now completely clean plugins, make sure the freshly installed game runs and can create and save a new vanilla city with no custom content without crashing.

    4.  If that is successful, apply the Maxis EP1 update to version 1.1.638.0 and then afterwards the Maxis Nightlights Update to version 1.1.640.0.  Confirm your game is updated to Version 1.1.640.0 and again make sure the game runs, can create a new city, can save the created city, and then can load the saved vanilla city without crashing.

    5.  If that is successful, reapply the NTCore 4GB patch that comes included with NAM.  Do not yet install NAM, only the 4GB patch.  Once again, test to see if the game then runs, can create a new city, can save the created city, and then can load the saved vanilla city without crashing.

    6.  If that is successful, install the NAM.  At the time of this posting we are now up to NAM 43, so you might now just move on to that newer version.  Once again, check to see that your game now with NAM installed still runs, can create a new city, can save the created city, and then can load the saved city without crashing.

    7.  If that is successful, move your temporarily saved backup custom content from Step 2 back into the SimCity plugins folder.  Make sure you are not moving or copying back over any previous NAM files that might then overwrite the NAM installation performed in Step 6.  Once again, check to see that your game now with NAM and your other plugins installed still runs, can create a new city, can save the created city, and then can load the saved city without crashing.

    8.  If that is successful, move your temporarily saved backup regions from Step 2 back into SimCity's regions folder.  Check to see that your game with NAM and your other plugins installed can still run, can open your saved regions and cities, and can save a city without crashing.

Let us know along the way with each step what has succeeded, and also let us all know exactly when it no longer works.  Do not skip or rearrange steps, do not try to combine steps, and do not add steps.  Use the steps as a checklist--the point where things break will give us all better insight into the problem without the confusion of months of potential interfering factors from a myriad of underlying sources and missed versions.  The problem may still be from your anti-virus, your Windows, your user permissions, your installation paths, but before you attempt radically flailing changes to your operating system, your anti-virus, or whiplash purges to their updates, we need to narrow down or rule out what is breaking in the game.  If we are lucky, it might be enough that we have flushed out any bad installation/version/change/compatibility issues that may have been inadvertently introduced.

It also occurs as a long shot to me to make sure you actually have some free space remaining on the drive that has your OS.  I know many digital hoarders / family members who do not leave space for Windows page files, causing all sorts of grief.  My own Windows 7 machine has 24GB of RAM and seemed to slowly choke on some heavy applications particularly at saving when it had less than 40GB of free space for paging on the OS drive, and these problems would include memory access errors, slowdowns, and crashes.  You mileage will vary, but we should at least also rule out this easy possibility.

    Hopefully this will help.

    Hi Odainsaker,

    Thanks for all of this.

I haven't yet installed Update 1.1.640.0 because I didn't look hard enough after CorinaMarie made it easy for me (sorry CorinaMarie, my stuff-up.............)

I'll install Update 1.1.640.0 and then run the game and I'll see what happens first.

If it crashes again, I'll go through the steps which you explained.

As far as I know, I haven't put the system back to any restore point.

Thanks everyone so far for your help with this.

    Stay tuned.

So, I'm going to follow those steps explained by Odainsaker, step by step and one by one, slowly.

This might take some time, but hopefully this will work.

    Stay tuned.

    Okay, thanks Cyclone Boom.

I'll go through the steps which Odainsaker detailed, one by one, step by step and I'll follow what you posted above regarding the Windows Update KB3086255.

This might take some time, everything sounds like it will work. Fingers crossed.

    Stay tuned.

Oh, another question before I begin:

Currently, CAM is installed in the Plugins folder.

I'm thinking of doing a proper installation of version 2.1 as opposed to just copying it from the custom Plugins.

If I am to do so, at what stage should I re-install CAM 2.1?

Yep, that is another complication, as CAM cannot be merely copied over in plugins, but should be re-installed as it makes changes to files in the core game folder.  I would probably install CAM after NAM, and installing CAM 2.1 should not conflict with the later NAM traffic simulators in the way that the earlier version of CAM inadvertently could.

Part of restoring plugins will be minding for any other such mods that also make changes in the game folder, and to instead properly reinstall those as well.  Most lots and BATs will be fine, but any kind of fixes, game interface, or simulator changes will need to be carefully looked at again.

    Hi, I'm back.

    Another stumbling block..............

I tried to enable the driver's service (and set it to automatic) via the command prompt. Unfortunately, this happened:

What do I do now? Should I uninstall KB3086255 via the Windows Updates like I did before?

Uninstalling KB3086255 would certainly be an option.

For access being denied, it sounds like perhaps there's a lack of permission to run the command. Try right clicking the shortcut to the command prompt and clicking the Run as administrator option. This might give the elevated permissions it requires to run.

    Hi Cyclone Boom,

Thanks for that. It worked and it's showing "SUCCESS" in the command prompt.

    I'll continue on now :-)

    Hi,

I installed Update 1.1.638.0 first, then I installed Update 1.1.640.0.

How do I confirm the game is updated to Version 1.1.640.0 before I run the game?

    Cheers.

Try hovering over the SimCity 4.exe file located in the Apps subfolder. It should display the version in the little popup which appears.

Or alternatively right click and go to Properties and then check inside the Details tab.

    Thanks Cyclone Boom,

I've done those things, but it isn't confirming the game's update to Version 1.1.640.0 anywhere in the pop-up window.

I checked the Program Files x86 folder and everywhere else I can.

The only thing I'm seeing is when I right-click SC4 on the taskbar and click Properties and Details, it's showing:

"Modified: 31-01-2022 @ 10:35 PM", which is when I installed the game.

"Date created: 01-02-2022 @ 4:28 PM", which is when I installed the 2 updates.

    "Accessed: 01-02-2022 @ 4:28 PM", also when I installed the 2 updates.

    What gives?

    @daderic888

In your shortcut, try seeing what the Shortcut tab specifies:

    SC4-GOG-Shortcut.png

In there the Target path should show the location of where the game is installed.

Also it might be installed somewhere other than the Program Files (x86) directory. So just see what it says, and then try following the path to locate the executable.

    Thanks heaps Cyclone Boom,

I found it and it shows the File Version as 1.1.640.0.

    Cheers mate :-)

    5.  If that is successful, reapply the NTCore 4GB patch that comes included with NAM.  Do not yet install NAM, only the 4GB patch.  Once again, test to see if the game then runs, can create a new city, can save the created city, and then can load the saved vanilla city without crashing.

    Okay,

Now I'm applying the 4GB patch that's included in NAM 43 (not the NAM 43 itself).

I double-click the file and I select Yes to "Do you want the program to make changes to your computer" question.

A duplicate window pops up. When I double-click the 4GB Patch application in the duplicate window, a back-up 4GB Patch file appears and a window pops up saying "Couldn't open executable".

Should I click "Run As Administrator"?

If not, what should I do with this?

    Am I missing something?

    Excellent! *:8)

That's good news as 640 means your game is fully patched with the BAT nightlights update.

Running as Administrator will grant elevated permissions, which should help with applying the 4GB Patch file. That's worth a try, or otherwise what can be done is run the NetworkAddonMod_Setup_Version43.bat file inside of the NAM installation folder. Maybe try even running this as an Administrator.

This is a special script file which @CorinaMarie and @Tarkus coded, and contains special logic which should help with the patching process. The same patching is done if running the 4GB Patch manually, but it might help to run the .bat file for this.

So I'd give that a try as it should help.

Then finally, check inside to make sure your SimCity 4.exe file has a new date modified time, which will confirm the patch has been applied.

    ----------

By the way, a small tip I recommend is to disable the "Hide extensions for known file types" Windows setting. See this article for details on how to do so.

This way it becomes clear what each file is, as otherwise the file extensions (like .bat) get hidden. *;)

    Thanks heaps again Cyclone Boom,

The 4GB Patch was applied successfully by running the NetworkAddonMod_Setup_Version43 batch file. It's showing today's date and time (02-02-2022 @ 4:55 PM) under Date Modified in the details tab.

The NAM installation popped up, together with the command window, which was blank. I closed the command window and it closed the NAM application process before I ticked the Read and Understood check box. I would still be able to install NAM 43 (4GB Patch) once I complete Step 5 of Odainsaker's steps?

    Cheers.

That's great, and so the next thing to test is the game loads fine. Then as @Odainsaker said for testing to make sure a new city can be created. After that exit the game, and reload the city again to confirm it loads without any crashing. It can just be done in a plain new region for this.

After that close the game, and then there's no need to run the 4GB Patch again. The NAM can be installed from running the .jar file. This is the large almost 800 MB file which is what the .bat file ran (and you'd closed with waiting before continuing). So running it directly will begin the NAM installation again.

    Hope this works!

    Thanks again Cyclone Boom.

I installed NAM 43 with the LHD components and Step 6 worked out well.

I made the changes from RHD to LHD.

    So far, so good.

    G'day all!

Well, now I completed all 8 steps. I deleted the installed terrain, rock and water mods that were previously in my region and large city tile. It loaded okay and I managed to save it in the default terrain, rock and water format. I then exited the game, all using the 2 mods which were discussed earlier in this thread. I copied other the Wet Tropical Terrain, the Wet Tropical Mossy Rock Mod and the RVT Coastal Mod into the city and the game loaded and saved well enough. I thought of using .dat files only for now instead of installation files in case the game goes sideways again.

The only thing is the SM2 MMP plugins (in particular, the SM2 Sands as discussed earlier on in this thread). I went to put just a bit more of the SM2 white sand and it seemed to have locked up, so I used CTRL+ALT+DELETE and I clicked End Task. I might have to give the SM2 Sands files a miss and have a go at something else (like utilising the RVT Coastal Mod to my advantage). However, I will resume what I have been working on :-)

Thanks so much to everyone who has helped out. The game loads and saves well enough now without any issues.

I'm planning on my next topic or post to be in the City Journals and in the Showcase section of the Forum. It might take me a little while to do so.

    Cheers all :-)
