[Solved] Problem with HP Support Assistant

I have HP Slimline 260-a109nv. A couple of days ago I got a notification for updating HP Support Assistant. I just updated and at first everything went fine. But that was just the silence before the storm. Since that day, at least twice per day, the focus of my active programs get lost for a second, disrupting me while working and minimizing my games during playing! The last one is the worst of this because it's a disaster waiting to happen. We all know that SimCity 4 must be on focus when saving a city, and having HP minimizing my game during saving process will corrupt my city and destroy my work. Heck, just having the game minimized all of a sudden is terrible, so thanks for messing with my gaming fun, HP!

Having this problem after updating HP Support Assistant is not a coincidence, so what should I do to fix it? Downgrade the Assistant? Deactivate it somehow? Remove it entirely? What would you suggest me to do?

Hiya Terring, I'm very sad to hear it, I have a HP laptop and I didn't install HP Support Assistant after a reinstalling of Win10, Frankly, I couldn't see any defects without it. *:D But before you decide to uninstall it, Hope these links can provide some clues for you::}

    I'm running on an HP envy 15 and I disabled and removed it the first time it popped up. No complaints or troubles since. It's not like HP driver updates are worth a damn.

    Honestly what does such an application really do? If you don't mind manually updating drivers (or letting Windows take care of them), it's probably just bloatware you are better off without. I'd uninstall it personally.

    Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

    Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

    New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

    p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

    I agree, the best thing you can do is uninstall it.  I have had several HP laptops through the years and quite frankly, the support assist is just bloatware.  If for some reason you don't want to uninstall it, you can go into Services and disable the support assist service, or set it to manual start.

    Right now I have an HP Envy 15 laptop as well. All that I did right after purchasing this PC was to immediately uninstall all HP software (aside from the core programs such as HP Smart for Printers). It's pretty much bloatware and can definitely crash your game when you try to use it.

    Semi-related question: Has anyone ever managed to get a graphics driver update from HP that could actually complete the install?

    I've tried all three of the updates they've released during this computers lifecycle so far and not one of them will install. They all hang at various points during the install and refuse to close. System reset required to get rid of it.

    What are the specs of your machine?  What operating system version are you using (I'm assuming Windows 10)?  My first suggestion, without any further information, is to make sure all other programs are closed.  Also go into your 'Background Apps' and make sure to turn off all the apps that can run in the background.  Go into 'Startup' and disable any apps you don't need to start at boot up.  Then restart the machine and try to install the driver.  Obviously, make sure the driver is compatible with your system.  My initial guess is that some program is interfering with the install.

    You could also delete the current graphics driver using Device Manager, re-boot the machine and let Windows install a fresh copy.  Then try to install the HP driver.

    Next question is, why do you feel you need to update the graphics driver?  Is there some security issue or performance issue with the current installed driver?  Sometimes the best philosophy is 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it'.

    I've removed HP Support Assistant. It's too early to tell for sure, but so far so good.

    And... the problem has been solved. I've been giving more attention to my games those recent days (and right now I only have two of them, SimCity 4 and Empire Earth) and I've got no problems with any of my games. No more sudden minimizing, no more disruptions, everything is smooth as before. Now I can build my cities and conquer the world with no problems anymore :D
