SC4 Simulation Model

Two quick questions that requires a potentially complex answer: Does anyone know themselves, or if not themselves then at least be able to direct me to some good documentation/resources about the simulation model for SimCity 4, and everything involved with the simulation model therein? Where is the code stored for all this in the game folders, and has the source code been extracted?

The game's external data files are located where SC4 is installed:

• SimCity_1.dat
• SimCity_2.dat
• SimCity_3.dat
• SimCity_4.dat
• SimCity_5.dat

This is inside the SimCity 4 Deluxe folder at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe

Using the Reader 0.9.3 tool, it allows these to be opened to view the file entries within.

In terms of code, the SimCity_1.dat contains Lua file entries which is the scripting language the game uses. Not all the internal code is included in these scripts however, and this means how internal functions are inside the executable located in the Apps folder. There is no source code available for SC4 currently, and although it is possible how EA might someday release this, for the foreseeable future this seems unlikely. The best hope we have for advanced modifications is with DLL files.

You may find the Prima Guide useful for information about the simulation in general. Also this detailed topic explains about the traffic simulator in particular, which is what the NAM modifies in a complex way. I also suggest having a look at articles on the SC4D Wiki and also the Omnibus as well.
