Vanilla El-Rail texture with Alt. Implementation

It'd be nice if it was possible to have the advantages of the El-Rail mod included in NAM (with the ground texture, fences, ect) but with the vanilla track texture. Maybe it is possible with some manual configuration? The track texture used doesn't mesh well with the GLR texture, and with the Bullet Train mod installed as well, El-Rail and Monorail end up looking almost identical in terms of track texture.

While on this subject, I haven't been able to find any GHSR and/or HSR to GLR transitions, not sure if they exist? The El-Rail plugin has bit too much of an old-school innercity urban sort of look to it for specific applications of elevated rail I have in mind..

Unfortunately, the El-Rail Alternate Implementation isn't really being maintained anymore by the NAM Team.  The plan is to pull it out of the main mod for NAM 37 (along with the BTM and some other cosmetic/re-skin options that we simply don't have the staff to handle anymore), moving it to a separate package.

As far as (G)HSR-to-GLR, the NAM Team doesn't regard them as compatible systems, and the future of HSR is also in flux (no significant updates in 12 years, plus there's been a proposed Real High Speed Rail (RHSR) effort in planning for some time), so there's no plans on our end to add one.  That said, it wouldn't prevent a third-party from creating one.

    That's interesting. After having started using the El Rail mod and BT mod I find it difficult to go back even with what I consider to be the aesthetic drawbacks I still find them substantially more appealing than the vanilla versions.

    Altering the actual tracks shouldn't be hard in theory, because that part of the S3D transit models is handled by linked textures. In fact, Moonlight's models override the original ones if I'm recalling it correctly. So one of two ways to go about this modding-wise:

    • Go through the DAT files of Moonlights mod and remove only those FSH textures that are used for the rails
      From my familiarity with the files, I'm pretty sure tracking them down wouldn't be too hard.
    • Override Moonlights override by loading later a set of the original rail textures for el-rail
      You could do this, but why have two duplicate sets of textures hanging around?

    Either way it's only around 25 textures, I'd recommend looking inside the file ML JPN EL Rail 2011.dat inside the z___NAM\El Rail Alternate Implementation\Core Files folder. I believe all the textures (FSH) you should need, better still only those too, with the exception of 08DD0500 - 4. This last texture group, i.e. one texture for each of the 5 zoom levels, is used on a bridge piece and I don't think there is an equivalent in the base El-Rail, so leave that alone. But otherwise, just make a copy of that file and modify it to remove all the FSH files you don't need and you should have what you wanted.

    Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

    Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

    Thank you..

    So if I understand correctly, I just find all of the FSH files in the mentioned .dat file (after copying it) which represent the new track textures and delete them, like so?;

    Untitled.png.65a063a801c5958ad9782dd2ec3953c1.png

    And then use this modified .dat to override the NAM one.

    Edit; or rather, I would replace the NAM one, not override it.

    I actually like this look better for El-Rail, the transition with GLR looks smoother, so thanks again exactly what I was trying to achieve.

    That'll be a missing texture. It's unlikely you are actually missing the default El-Rail texture, which suggests ML's model used a unique ID for this piece. It should be possible to simply link to the original texture with an override of the S3D model with the necessary adjustments. Just load the attached file after the "ML JPN EL Rail 2011.dat" file, if you don't rename it, the patch works when in the same folder as that.

    I don't suppose you would have a similar fix for this instance?

    I've bundled it together with the previous one in this attachment. Make sure to overwrite or otherwise remove the old version.

    Question; I've never gotten into using the dual network El-Rail over road/street networks until recently and I just realized some of the pieces seem to clash with the alt. version with fences enabled;

    Untitled.png.e810b6cde6c123c047d900f6250d3f33.png

    Figured I couldn't be the first person to have this issue so I tried searching for it but couldn't turn up anything aside from one mention of it but with no relevant replies.

    Is there a fix for this do you know?

    I suspect not. The basic issue comes from T21 exemplars, which usually comes from incorrect setting of rotation/mirroring. This example is by no means the first such instance I'm aware of from this mod. It's something on my todo list to fix all such T21s, if that comes to pass, such changes/fixes will be incorporated into the distributed files.

    Bit of a necrobump,  I've been trying to track down the relevant S3D to try and change it myself but it's beyond me.

    Do you happen to know where model this is or what .dat it's located in or ect?

    Thanks again..

    Hi @junspud

    I've been following this with interest, and trying some of the suggestions. I too had the issue with the missing textures on the bridge frame on the ortho-el rail over the diagonal avenue. Going back through what I did, I realized I removed this set of FSH textures:

    191z5io.png

    Using a backup file and leaving that set alone solved the issue. I did notice, even on ML's original override, that the railbed on that particular bridge is different. Not sure why.

    Anyway, thought that might help. Hope it makes sense.

    This is perfect, thank you. I also deleted those ones so this should fix it for me as well.
