SimCity (2013) is no longer supported by EA, and AFAIK is no longer modded by the community. SimCity 4, which is significantly older, is (perhaps) surprisingly much more popular today than the reboot of SimCity.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

The studio that made this game is no more. It was shut down in March 2015.

Whats everyone playing instead ?

If this site activity says something, we are divided between still playing simcity 4 or moving into cities skylines. As one is still heavily moddable (and with a very active community) and the other still getting new content from its developers, it's very logical that they easily overrided the last release of EA.

SimCity 2013 was DOA.  The small maps and the fact it is not easily moddable killed it quickly.  As matias93 stated, most people are either still playing SimCity 4 or moved onto Cities Skylines.  I personally still play SC4.  On occasion I will play SimCity 3000 or SimCity 2000.  On even rarer occasions I will play SC2013, but after a point it's just not that enjoyable.  On the other hand I could play SC4 for hours and not get bored.

As others have touched on the community sort of got wedged between the two games being SimCity 4 and Skylines. Some poor decisions on modding capabilities really hurt the franchise.

It depends on who you're talking to, sadly it's hated by many. I would say for me, no SimCity is not dead.

I absolutely love SimCity 2013, yea the game may have its quirks but all in all it's a wonderful game that truly doesn't deserve the hate.

As for Cities Skylines, I've tried it but it just hasn't grown on me like SimCity has.

I too love SimCity 2013.  I still think it is the best city builder despite all the drawbacks and issues.  It was just poorly executed and too many issues at launch that it was dead the day it was released.

But I think it had the best game play.  It had great mechanics and offered a lot of game options.

Cities Skylines is nice to to build big beautiful cities, but I think the workshop is hurting it more than helping it.  It's just too easy for noobs to use and they abuse it and it ends up driving them away.  I mean every patch breaks the most popular mods and it causes a lot of frustration.

81-tile maps are awesome though.  Its game mechanics suck eggs though.  Once you figure out the mechanics, it ends up just being monotonous lay roads, zone roads, supply service, repeat.  If you're just a city designer, it paints wonderful cities.

But have twice as many hours in SC2013 than C:S.  But I rarely play SC2013 anymore, and mostly just help other users with C:S.  I just can't start a new city of C:S as it just gets boring so fast with no real mechanics to challenge me.

I don't miss the whole power line and water pipelines ordeal. I do think C:S is beautiful but I just can't do all of that, I love having it streamlined in SC.

All that might change when Microsoft purchases Electronic Arts.

I doubt it.

Even if Maxis still existed, which they don't, MS don't have a stellar reputation when it comes to game studios. Bizarre Creations, Lionhead, Rare and Twisted Pixel, just some examples of how they take a wrecking ball to previously successful entities. I know technically you can pin Bizarre on Activision, but MS certainly played their part too.

Not that I care if half of EA's franchises go down the toilet, most of it doesn't interest me in the slightest. But frankly that article is pure speculation, I seriously doubt EA are looking to be bought out. If MS really wanted to take them out, the smart money is on paying a small fortune to get the rights to Fifa, Madden and other sporting brands EA have monopolised. Armed with all the official players, you can guarantee the minions will buy your game, it's allowed EA to print money for a seriously long time.

Quote

(from linked article) There's no doubt about it that it would be a massive blow to Sony, PC gamers and maybe even Nintendo.

Hmmm, so if MS bought EA, PC gamers would suffer, really? Don't MS make the #1 PC OS Windows? But Nintendo only maybe? So the same genius that brought you the article believes MS are more likely to sell games on Nintento's platform than their own? That's a chuckle right there!

Quote

(from linked article) However, there's no substantial or concrete evidence that Microsoft will purchase EA. It's just a discussion on the table. Apparently, Microsoft also discussed purchasing Valve, but given the bad blood between Valve owner Gabe Newell and Microsoft (due to Newell being a former employee at Microsoft) a buyout of Valve and its digital platform Steam seems unlikely. Plus Valve's properties aren't the most attuned for building up console market share and are definitely more themed around PC gaming.

Ah, so we're just speculating because it's a slow news day... MS buy Valve, that's another howler.

Just for perspective, how much did MS pay for Minecraft? 2.5 Billion dollars. What does that make EA or Valve worth?

EA: Net revenues of around 5 billion a year. So for a buyout, times that by 10, but for a hostile takeover, you are going to need a lot more. Maybe upwards of 100 billion, it's a healthy profitable corporation after all. Shareholders would want a very good pay day to agree to a change.

Valve: Well it's harder to find exact figures, since Valve isn't a listed company. But this snippet from 2010 (OK Wikipedia source, pinch of salt):

Quote

Valve does not make its finances public. In 2005, Forbes estimated that Valve had grossed $70 million that year. Ed Barton, a Screen Digest analyst, estimated Valve's 2010 revenue to be in the "high hundreds of millions of dollars". As of 2011, the company had an estimated worth of $2 to 4 billion, and according to Newell it was the most profitable company per employee in the United States. Most of Valve's revenue comes from its Steam service, which controlled 50 to 70% of the market for downloaded PC games in 2011.[65]

Now I'd say with a near monopoly on PC gaming, those figures could only go upwards. Certainly Valve is worth more than Minecraft. Again we're looking at many, many billions to get any sort of serious offer looked at. Gabe doesn't need the money, so unlike EA, Valve can just stick a finger in MS's direction if they desire. So for this to be a reality, we're talking stupid-money and let's face it, MS aren't looking to buy into selling games, XBox is their platform for that. They want content, which Valve don't really do, the mere idea MS would buy them is quite incredulous, it just doesn't fit IMO.

In summary: ClickBait.
