(BTW renaming the good plugins folder "zplugins" in order to delete the xplugins folder  did not work. I am stuck with it and its demand for Authorization. But it does not keep the good plugins folder from working. Apparently. I feel very uneasy now...).

If you mentioned it, I've already forgotten. Which version of Windoze are you using? Folders and files in your documents ought to be under your total control. I know the OS gets protective of stuff in Program Files, but it just doesn't seem right that it won't let you manage your own files in Documents.

One other thing that would prevent renaming the xPlugins folder back to Plugins would be if you had the game running. Like if you Tabbed out of it to make the change. But, if that were the case it should say: No can do, boss. It's in use. Rather than saying you need proper security clearance.

Let's go thru the steps I suggested again:

  1. Rename Plugins to xPlugins
  2. Create new Plugins
  3. Copy some test stuff into Plugins
  4. Rename Plugins to zPlugins
  5. Rename xPlugins to Plugins

If it let you do anyone of those renames then it seems logical you are allowed to do any of the other ones. Have you tried working your comp over with a BFH? (Then you'd know exactly what's wrong with it.)

    Windows 8.1

I never make changes while playing (give me some credit ! although, considering my recent problems....*:) )

I did what you say (and said). xplugins won't let itself be renamed. Demands authorization, stridently.

    Argh ?

(I assumed you did know, but it was something that came to mind that would prevent the renaming.)

Grrr. I'm out of ideas. Especially since one rename is ok and then the next is not. Is this a coincidence with the ghost lights doing weird things only part of the time?

The thing is, to really go through a problem, it's necessary to get feedback, so when I asked this:

Yeah you can't rename the folder if another one with the same name exists. Otherwise, if a folder name change is locked, the first step is simply to reboot the PC to see if that unlocks things.

Having not got an answer if this worked, it's hard to advise you on the best course of action. I need to know if another folder named "Plugins" exists, also if a simple reboot helped.

Windows will often lock files like this, it happens and is the OS being over-protective of you, by not giving yourself the necessary "rights" to alter your own stuff. But, it can be reversed, it's just easier to start with simple solutions, before we get to messing around with the permissions.

(sorry. t'was late :-) No, the rebooting didn't work. There are currently two plugins folder, xPlugins, which is empty except for one empty folder containing one empty folder with one empty folder (!), and Plugins, which I am currently rebuilding.

You shouldn't need to rebuild it, that will always be a lot of work. Have you tried simply moving the content from the xPlugins folder into Plugins? That should work, unless all the files inside it have been locked too.

Oh I back up everything in my playing folder ; I just have to drag & drop the relevant folders from Documents Industry, Commerce. Parls etc.). But I am going to play a new city, so I want new stuff and I go to my stash to pick and choose :-) I must confess I have almost as much fun doing that as I have playing...:-)
