SC4 Deluxe will install but not run?

Hi everyone.

I have recently installed SC4 (Deluxe) onto my old computer without any problems. I had it previously installed on the same machine and from the same discs, and it ran fine with no issues. At some point in the past I evidently uninstalled it, and now I have reinstalled it again. This machine is an old Advent computer and is running Vista still, but should be fine for SC4. I think everything from the previous installation is deleted, unless a .png or two of the maps are still floating around in The Sims 2. Not sure if this would have any effect, so thought I would mention this (I will look for these files later to check).

Everything to do with the installation went fine, but the game did not automatically start after the install as it used to.

I have tried to run the game from the start menu, I have also tried to run the game "run as administrator" and it just won't run anything. I can get as far as the start menu, where I click play and nothing happens except losing the start menu. If I open the control panel and then try to run the game by clicking play from the start menu, nothing for SC4 shows up on the control panel which suggests it isn't trying to run the game at all. It is as though the exe on the CD no longer works, or it is running a blank file. The blue spinny cursor will appear for a second after clicking play, but that is it.

I have installed the discs onto another machine (also running Vista) and again they installed fine, but still won't run. This second installation was on a machine which never had the game installed before, implying that any floating .png files in The Sims 2 are not the problem?

Could there be a common setting on these machines stopping the game from running, or could the discs be faulty? As I say above they appear to install the game fine, although in neither case did the game automatically start after installing. Both machines will run any other software installed as expected, suggesting a faulty exe on the disc perhaps?

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yepper. It's called the MicroSloth KB3086255 Borker Patch. More details here. Many peeps have successfully used this work around to play from disc on Vista to Win 8.1. (Win 10 requires even more work to get the discs to work.)

Oh, and Hiya, motoverdi. Welcome to Simtropolis! *:)

Thanks guys. I expected to get an e-mail if anyone responded, hence I'm only now replying :P

Something like that jogs my memory from before actually, though I think that was to do with something else. I've removed the update as there's nothing on this machine to worry about security-wise, I'm about to reboot and I'll let you know if that works.

You may need to adjust your settings. Go to this post and scroll down to the part called On Getting Beeped - aka Notifications Settings for info about that. You'll prolly want to tick the email option. *;)

Yes, by default email notifications are disabled.

After testing this out, I've found in the options page, the preference you'll need to enable is named: Someone comments on something I follow. The others could also be checked which apply to other site areas, but that's the one specifically for threads.

Just check the box in the right hand column for Email and hit Save at the bottom. *:)

Then whenever someone replies to a thread you follow, an email will then be sent to the address assigned to your account.

    For example:

    Test Email Notification.png

Of course, this does depend on following the thread in the box at the top right (as you currently are):  Follow Thread Box.png
