All this time playing SC4 and I had been building a very large industrial area.  The puffs of smoke started to become irritating and causing the game to lag.   I was going to ask if there's a mod to eliminate the smoke, but then went to Graphics Options and simply changed Visual Effects to Low and the smoke puffs disappeared.  The vehicle automata improved.  I'd rather see the vehicles than all that smoke.   So this is an option if you are building a major industrial city.

As long as you are happy with that setting then all is well.

However, there will be other side effects according to joelyboy911's post  here, "... the option is 'Visual Effects' If this is set to low, you won't see the direction arrows on ploppable lots, and the effect radius, as you said, is not generated."

The effect radius being referred to is when getting ready to plop fire, police, or medical buildings. So, just keep in mind that it affects more than just the smoke. ;) Additionally, to improve game speed the Shadows can be set to Low.

Thanks, I'll just leave it set at low while I'm building this major industrial tile.   I'm trying to get as much freight as I can using rail and seaports. also maximum use of toll booths on highways.
