okay so every time i save the game i get a CTD, except in one city tile that is almost nothing but water

and if i try to open an unrendered tile i also get a CTD

i'm on windows 10 but i suspect it's something in my plugins folder but i have absolutely no idea what it could be

i've tried the following:

  • reinstall the game
  • remove half of my plugins to see if that works and if it works move half of those plugins back into the folder etc.
  • moving the game to its own drive
  • linux (but i ran into other problems)
  • running the game in a virtual machine (but i couldn't get hardware mode to work)
  • install sc4 fix
  • remove sc4 fix
  • install the extra cheats dll
  • remove the extra cheats dll
  • run as admin
  • compatibility mode with everything down to Windows XP

in other words, the only thing i haven't tried is going back to windows 7

i have the CAM the NAM, a few fixes and a lot of various lots

If you open the regions folder anf than the folder of your region you'll see that every city is saved seperately. Maybe one of those files is corrupt. Then saving will end in a CTD. This can happen if something goes wrong during the game saving process, which occurs rarely, but it occurs (the logic is: everything bad that may occur will occur, it's only a matter of time. they solution is: make a backup of everything you can backup).

So first you must do a backup of the whole region-folder you're playing.

Then you can delete the first city from the ingame folder and start the game. SC4 will automaticly replace the missing city with a default one, plain and empty - so you can't reverse this process and that's why it is absoltely necessary to make a backup first. Now you can try if saving works again.

Do this until you found the corrupt city-file.

Now delete the whole testing folder and put the backup-folder back in game.

Now you've got to the kill the one city-file that you identified as the culpit. This city and all terrain information you have lost completely and forever - let's say because of a big desaster. You'll have to do it again. But at least you recovered the rest of the map.

But if I'm right then this:

is another problem I can't assign. Sorry.

Is it a custom map? Have you a copy of the original?

What happens if you do this on the original? Now - not what was before, I mean, if you install it now and open it now?

If you're not playing in hardware mode but in software mode - could also be at this point some HD-texture is loaded. In software mode this cause CTD, maybe except for the city where the HD texture isn't loaded because it is only water.

But then other cities should crash too on opening. And then, if you empty your plugin folder this should stop too.

the problem is this happens with every city in the region, except for one tile which is almost entirely covered in water

i loaded up a random city in another region and saved, and that worked fine

maybe the entire region is corrupted?

this seems to happen on every unrendered tile that isn't completely flat

it doesn't happen with regions created from a grayscale imported to the game, so maybe SC4M is the problem here?

No, only the city you last edited can get corrupted while saving and the geodata, as far as I know, is also saved per city - that every city is saved separately means that can't be the reason, if the CTD is on every tile. I must be wrong. The region itself consist only of a bmp taken each time and saved each time you did changes. Can't be corrupted either.

Never had a problem with SC4M. But a) if CTD happens too when you open with a completely empty plugin-folder and b) other regions work one has to think what the reason can be. And there is not much left.

If it was a terrian mod or some plugin, it would stop when the plugin folder is empty. If it was a general problem with the installation or with windows it would appear on other regions too. And if one of the citytiles works - puuh ... maybe there is some terraindata wrong?  Sorry, can't help on this, don't know enough about how SC4M works. But yes, sounds to me as there's something wrong with the basic data of the map.

But if the map worked when you started playing and the error occured later on, even this is not really plausible. As - again - every city is saved separately, to my knowledge also terrain data (there is no separate file for terrain data of the whole region, the region itself is only a snapshot), so it would only affect one city, not all of them. Such an error (with SC4M) would occur quite from the start.

    I'm running out of idears.

turns out the problem was with my terrain mod

guess i'm gonna have to find a new one :(

edit: switched to a different terrain mod and everything seems to work fine now
