Again in France.
Terrorism is being the line of investigation by French police. Personally, I think it was terrorism indeed.

Another tragedy. There really are more reasons to keep flags at half mast permantly than not.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

How many times must France bleed like this?

I won't be surprised at all if ISIS takes credit for this.

Another sad day for France. The world needs to come together to fight this evil called ISIS or whatever they are going by. It doesn't matter if they have a country, nor what country these cowards choose to hide in. We owe it to all those innocent victims to hunt them down and bring them to justice.

Well done to The Guardian for placing an add for a Star Trek film in the middle of this article :noway:. I know it wasn't intentional, but is the desire for advertising revenue so high you want to profit from this terrible act. Have some shame!

I cannot imagine putting myself in the shoes of those who were there. The terror of running for your life from a truck chasing you at full speed watching bodies and people scream as they are rammed one by one. The terrorist tried to maximize his kills by turning to pursue people fleeing the area. Absolutely despicable. Another awful day.

He was also apparently shooting people as drove. This is just despicable. I get a sick feeling whenever I open up the news before going to bed and there's some horrific tragedy like this.. but events like it don't surprise me like they used to because they're so common now. What is the world coming to?

Horrible.

The next several years are going to be littered with attacks like these. You don't need guns to terrorise people.

Knife attacks, vehicles ramming into pedestrians... In China there have been knife attacks by Muslim terrorists. In Israel it seems not a year goes by without a terrorist hijacking a vehicle, or using his own vehicle, to ram into people.

Sadly the Muslim world is disintegrating into a massive religious and sectarian war. It's really a Great War, like that of WW1 in Europe. Unfortunately the violence will spill over. Muslim communities in the West need to do a lot more to ostracize individuals who are thinking about jihad, there can no longer be any more grey areas.

If a Muslim is contemplating jihad in the West, and tells someone else about it, that Muslim needs to be arrested. There is no place for jihad and holy war in today's age.

I've seen footage and photos of the aftermath. It's hard to believe what you are looking at. How did a night of celebration turn to an eerie, bloody, creepy evening? The boulevard was flowing with blood.

FYI, This is an interactive map of the route of the truck by the NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/07/14/world/europe/trail-of-terror-france.html

Hypothetically, if a friend told you they were planning a crime, would you run to the police and tell them about it? It doesn't need to be a mass-murder, just in general? What if you didn't take them seriously or just thought they were venting their frustration?  It sets a bad precedent if we run around arresting people like some kind of Pre-Crime unit. If someone is advocating hate or crime publically, that's a point where it needs to be dealt with, but I don't think these things are generally public.

The real problem is one many are scared about, because the realities of these kinds of crimes is that there is little anyone can often do to prevent them. If someone is willing to sacrifice their own life for a cause, however jaded or terrible the crime, often the best you can do is clear up afterwards. It certainly doesn't help to go around vilifying communities or entire religious sections as if somehow they are responsible, when one bad egg goes down this path. The vast majority of Muslims don't believe in violence, they were apparently not spared from the atrocity in question here either. It's not really a cold new world, the same problems just repeat themselves throughout history, none of this is really new. I mean, the IRA were holding the UK to ransom not so long ago with violence and terror.

Peace requires a delicate balancing act, we can't be seen to be throwing around the blame of these terrible acts on a given set of people. When you do that, the cycle of violence will just be made longer as a consequence.

I agree to a point. Pre-crime is Orwellian and tracking it down is virtually impossible, it couldn't work.

In Western countries more liberal Muslims do not contemplate jihad, what I'm wondering is what proportion of more orthodox Muslims, living in the UK, are more ambivalent about it all. They would condemn a terrorist attack yes, but how many feel it's retribution for USA/UK/NATO intervention over the past fifty and more years?

But the fact there is so much sectarian violence in the Middle-East makes me believe that violence is a problem plaguing orthodox Muslim countries, let's not forget anti-Israel attitudes. Violent attitudes are a serious problem across large swathes of Islam.

There are also 10s of thousands  of people who feel disenfranchised for what ever reason even in the "civilized"  countries.

these are the people who on thier own, or if they are radicalized by some group with an agenda,  the results are still the same.

the people that do the radicalization's know how to find these types of fringe people, have you ever wondered why none of these radicalized terrorists is  the son of

some important figure? they find the ones who have nothing to live for, or have mental issues, or are easily manipulated.

Its something that will not go away until the more progressive Muslims demand their sons  stop dieing   in stupid ways for "the Cause".

ISIS claims it inspired the attack.

Take note of the word 'inspired'. They are not claiming he acted under their orders.

Unlike the 2015 Paris attacks, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel does not seem to be an 'official' member of the group. ISIS released their images of the Paris attackers online showing them fighting in the battlefield and to praise them. But they don't have Bouhlel on their database. He was radicalized and probably operated on his own as a lone wolf outside ISIS- a copycat crime.
