I don't have Volume 5 because I declined it on my last donation and it went to some deserving soul.  However, is there something strange about the format of these files?  They should be either *.jpg or *.png.  Have you tried to open one of them in a graphics editor?  (the GIMP for example).

the thing is, volume 5 is completely different from the previous disc i own, which is volume 3. in volume 3, the disc comes with a program that showcases all the content. but volume 5 takes me to a webpage where all the content are listed. the pic above it's actually a corp from chrome.

Pick any of the pictures.  Make sure you have file extensions enabled, and post the file name, please.

I believe Granpa Moose is referring to the option in Windoze Explorer. In XP it's under Tools, then Folder Options:

    5967552598494_FileExt.jpg.36d31b2887e74787289b468fd1891b16.jpg

Later Win versions prolly have this in a similar place. Make sure there is no check mark in the option I've indicated.

On a side note, I'm not sure how this is relevant if your disc is taking you to a Web URL and if that is what is not showing the pics. I'm inclined to believe the links were valid prior to one of the site upgrades and now they are borked. That's just a guess, however.

    Good luck.

Thanks for that.  I haven't run windows in so long, I forget where things are anymore.  There are certain minimum things one needs to know when running a game of this vintage and knowledge of the file system is one of them.

My present system doesn't much care whether files have extensions or not.  Only some applications care.  Usually file types are determined by sampling the file.

I think the issue here is that your browser can't display the images. Since logically they do exist on the disc, you need to look at reasons why your browser would fail to load them. Usually that will be a security setting in the browser. Making the file extension appear in Windows will not change anything here. I don't have the disk or Chrome to check any of this. Odd that the same problem occurs with other browsers though too.

Here is the official Chrome support for this problem, try running through those options. If not, perhaps the disc relies on a plugin that you do not have installed. Check for a readme or something on the disc. Without knowing how the CD works, it's difficult to be more precise. But typically things like Flash or Java can be required for such utilities.

I'm also not familiar with the new Vol 5 disk.

It's quite a tricky one to diagnose, as this could be caused by a number of things. If it occurs in multiple browsers, there must be a common factor.

Are there any options when you right click the missing image icon?

show image in new window, show image in new tab, save link as, copy link address...and yes it happens with all of my browsers. my computer has never had problems displaying images.

    OK, thanks.

Could you try copying the link address and pasting it here?

That should reveal the file's location (I assume on the CD) and the format we're dealing with.

Agreed.  We need to see this complete file string to get a handle on this.  If the images came off one of the social networking sites, they might not be recognizable free-standing.  Some of the imaging sites have also taken to outputting a funny file string as well.  I suppose this is part of the nannying that's been going on.

Ok, so this needs to be:

    https://www.simtropolis.com/repository/screens/monthly_07_2013/cdf2618660b89576dbcf1720580e448d-4.png

    To show:

    cdf2618660b89576dbcf1720580e448d-4.png

    And the other should be:

    https://www.simtropolis.com/repository/screens/monthly_07_2013/6b6acdf2dbcca0cd30e9d88144084726-8.png

    To show:

    6b6acdf2dbcca0cd30e9d88144084726-8.png

The difference is: file:///D:/STEX05/data from the disc linky and: http://www.simtropolis.com online. Starting with the /repository... they are the same.

As for what this means, I'll leave that to the experts. ;)

    Thanks.

I see there's a double // after "repository". As Cori showed, this isn't present on the site. But interestingly, using a double slash still reaches the image (for example).

    A couple of questions:

    1. The image is located on (D:) drive. Is this the location of the CD, or where the disk's data has been locally saved?

    2. Does this image exist at all at that path? If so, can it be opened manually on your computer?

To check this, try navigating to the monthly_07_2013 folder.
Assuming you're on Windows, this can be done by going to My Computer, right clicking (D:) drive and selecting "Open".

yes, the content from volume five is installed on my D drive, unlike volume 3 which i also own, all the files are stored on the disc. also, when i open these content, they are all presented in the format of a html link. it's very strange, i have never seen anything like this.

Does it make any difference if you try directly from the CD? Maybe the images weren't copied over into "repository".

I can't do it directly with the CD, because every time when you put in the CD, the program ask you to install all the files on one's PC. unlike volume 3 which all the content can be  directly assessed on the CD, the volume 5 can't.

Ah right, so I guess the CD has the files compressed (and works like an installer). That would make sense to save disk space.

Are you able to access the images inside the repository folder? This should match up to the file name shown in the browser.

Otherwise, it might be worth trying a reinstall.
