Title.

I've been itching to try and pick up 3DSMax and BAT again, but I'm not sure what I'd want to create. I figured it'd be best if I saw what the community wanted. Though, if someone ends up bringing up a really good case for producing one of the above, I'll consider it more heavily.

Side note is that if I end up getting committed to it, I do have a knack for making things into huge projects.

Thanks again!

Sci-Fi stuff!

Seriously, we have already a gazillion of modern and older stuff (such as generic glass boxes and vintage cars), and only a few futuristic stuff (such as arcologies and futuristic aircrafts). That's not fair, we need more out-of-this-world mods and BATs.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

I would say more low and midrises in general (voted for Hong Kong).

I would greatly appreciate buildings and lots sized and modded properly so as to compete with the Maxis content.

Buildings I would like to see:

- Something to compete with the (Maxis) Modde Inc, Curtin Fabrics and Galvin Techtronics.

- Buildings about the size of Reflect Systems Incorporated (Euro), or Brink Real Estate (Houston) - well these are rather small hirises.

- Some 4x3 CO$$$ hirises maybe?

- Midrise CO$$, like Karim Medical Supply Company, Hiatt Architects, as well as Hayashi Consultants and Cho & Sons.

- Any true CS building! SC4 to a large extent uses CO buildings as CS!

- R$$ condos - the game contains three medium condos for each tileset, a smaller stage-4 and two larger stage-5 ones (2x3 lots). Growing them all over the place, they get very repetitive.

- R$$$ mansions. Except for the Euro, and to a lesser degree Chicago, the ingame set is extremely poor - thy NY and Houston sets contain basically two models with color variations (plus a small and ugly one). It would be best to size them as the ingame ones and add them into the Maxis prop families. You could avoid lotting work this way. Maxis has actually done a good job here.

- R$$$ palazzos. The ingame set is incredubly poor for all four tilesets.

- And finally, a 3x3 R$$$ hirise is totally missing.

I would greatly appreciate making ANY of the above building types.

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley

I vote for the following:

low rise and midrise commie blocks and public housing projects with barred windows, grime, and neon signs (R$)

brutalist car lots with futuristic vehicles (think toyota dealers with cars of the late 21st century)

modernist/brutalist urban malls with red neon signs (CS$), post modernist/minimalist urban malls with clean façades, plenty of windows, "neon" signs of multiple colors, and electronic billboards (CS$$), and shiny & curvy urban malls with open areas, plenty of glass, green roofs, and holograms (CS$$$)

Futuristic R$$ condos made of geometric shapes (boxes, prisms, hexagons, hemispheres, pyramids), made of reinforced concrete, with ample windows and light-up signs.

Midrise CO$$ straight out of Glass city or shortened versions of east asian skyscraper offices, don't forget the electric billboards and neon signs.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I suppose I'll go with the scifi stuff then.

Upon opening the thing I just realised how rusty I was with it all. Are there any resources which'll help me pick it up again? It seems that the articles that helped me before on the Omnibus are now all broken.

I don't know anything about BAT, but I have almost 2 years of experience with 3DSMax. I could make the medium density low wealth and medium wealth buildings with textures (exported to FBX) but the props will be all up to you.

@Kavaeric I've been thinking of doing some mid to late 21st Century style buildings. Since doing those buildings would be mainly fictional, go ahead and start brainstorming designs. After you have the generic shape of your building, you can ask people here for opinions and suggestions on the detail.

What I will probably do is design a basic building model and then let others help add to the design. I think this could help you get off to a good start, and always remember to not let people fight over and/or try to force you to BAT what they want to see; BAT what makes you happy! :)

I know 3dsmax pretty well, so if you have any questions about modelling or texturing, feel free to send me a private message. Cheers! ;)

I didn't vote. I think games are made for fun and the same with making content for games. It should be fun too. So I don't see a reason why you couldn't do whatever you like. Some of this some of that. Why deciding this or that if you have the freedom to do a bit of everything?

    EDIT

    To say something constructive:

Maybe you could browse through this thread to get some inspiration.
