Question : Stopping a vanilla asset from loading ?

Hi Skyliners,

I've got a question for our experts here.

I'm reworking a vanilla building... adding lights because they forgot to add them, but I've also corrected the scale (the floor were made for hobbits) and removed about 700 useless tris.

Now I'm wondering if we can prevent the vanilla version from loading in memory when we launch the game. Is there a way by using the building themes system or do we need something else for that ?

Or... can boformer's resource replacer work on meshes too ?

Not quite the same reasoning, but dealing with the same subject: it would be awesome if we could simply switch off any vanilla asset the same way as we can with custom assets. There's quite a few vanilla ones that I insta-bulldoze as soon as they emerge, so it would be even better if they weren't loaded at all (thus freeing up resources for more custom content).

You can use my resource replacer mod to replace the textures. I also added an option to modify the color variations, and it would be easy to add an option for floor heights.

Only modifying meshes is not possible and not planned in the near future.

The mod unloads the original textures to free up memory, and you can publish all textures in a single "resource pack mod".

The good thing is that you can apply the resource pack to any existing city, and you can uninstall the mod at any time.

I can write down the documentation how this stuff works if you want.

Well yeah, I didn't even think about that, we need to be able to eradicate some of the vanilla (the high level futuristic "things" need to disappear forever)

Sadly it won't be useful in this case (I really made too much modifications to the vanilla, I think I'll cut 500 more tris)... but it will quite certainly be for other buildings. So the documentation will be very useful, thank you !! (no hurry, do it if you've got some tim in our hands).

So... we're still having no way of killing vanilla assets... and it would be really nice to do so.

Yeah, that would be great but some vanilla buildings are good too.

I like a lot of the vanilla buildings, but I agree, there are some I bulldoze as soon as I see them grow. Some of the futuristic-looking apartments get the bulldozer automatically.

I agree it would be nice to be able to turn off vanilla assets the same way you can custom ones.

Most definitely. I found the assets in the base game and the European part of the Euro-expansion to be pretty hit-and-miss (maybe CO wanted to avoid initially dictating the overall style of the game too much by sticking with just one distinct building style, and instead choose to watch the community to work out what style is most favored - thankfully most players seem to prefer realistic buildings), but on the whole the international buildings from the Euro-pack and the buildings added with After Dark - especially the expansion's American-style commercial buildings and larger offices - are very nice.
