Starting a new project/ series

Hello guys. I am pretty much a brand new, well not pretty much, I am brand new to BATing. I have a couple of experiments under my belt (pictures included) now so I am about to tackle my first real big project. I am going to attempt to recreate Ebbets Field. Home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. My ultimate goal is to create a series of many old time stadiums and all of the current ones. It was suggested I open a thread here for help should I need it. Can't wait to start putting these things out.

Wow, great goal.

It's great that you're reaching out to the community for advice, this is a very friendly and skilled community so I'm sure you'll get some really good help.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Thank you. I appreciate that. I started working on Ebbets field last night. Didn't get very far because I was exhausted and crashed early. I got the field and walls laid out last night. I need to texture those tonight and start on the stands as well. The stands are going to take a while to get done because they are quite intricate especially out in center field. I just realized I want to learn how to create working lights for the stadium. I should have done one more experiment before I dove into this lol. Oh well, I will just do it with this one.

I am looking only at the pictures, but these buildings look tiny. You should test your models with people props to see if those look right. Ok, Maxis sims are stretched, perhaps four metres tall, but still the buildings should look at least reasonable in comparison to the population. I suggest starting with real life dimensions. And adjust the height 133 %.

The bottom one had poor textures. Too repetitive. The top one is better, but would benefit from grime and effect. I know that getting the texture right is hard, and it might require more artistic eye than technical skill.

I definately lack an artistic eye lol. When you say grime and effect is that something I can add in the tool or is is something I have to do myself in another program like photoshop or gimp? The texture you are not fond of is just a simple brick texture. The other one is actually the exterior of Yankee Stadium. I am planning on something entirely different on the one I am currently working on and we will see how it goes.

When you say they look tiny do you mean height wise or all together? I believe the lots are 6x6 if memory serves (not in front of my computer at the moment). I figured 6x6 would be plenty since back in the day these stadiums were pretty small. Good idea on the people props though. I will do that tonight with these and see how they look in comparison.

Thank you for your advice sir.

3DS MAX has all kind of features, which I am not too familiar with. Some may be doable in 3D program, but yes I use paint program, gimp. Actually, it can be harder than doing the 3D model. I am relative newcomer into Batting, so I am learning still.

Vester made me a tutorial on shading. (page 4 if the links doesn't go directly to that.)

I have played with Gimp brush options. I have downloaded some interested brushes. I feel that gradient method is too uniform and I have tried to use cloud brushes to give more effect.

The scale is big and long argued issue in SC4. The real life scale does not necessary fit in all occasions. For example I have upscaled my small props and there may be situations in where some huge building may look better in the game when it is shrinked.

However, I would start with the real life scale. I looked the size of a baseball field from Wikipedia, and  if we say it can be about 300 feet. Minimun I guess. In metric that means about 100 metres, and as the SC4 tile is 16 metres, that would make length of 6 tiles. Your field is 4 tile long and this would indicate that the model is at least 50 % smaller than real life

Google Earth is a great program which you can use to measure the horizontal dimensions of a building. Check my thread (in signature) for the tutorials about "deriving dimensions" (or something like that).

I actually never did the math on the size of the field. I simply matched my field with the size of another field I already downloaded. Shouldn't have done that lol.

Awesome! Thanks for the help guys. I will probably be back for more help ha ha ha.

Great! Stadiums are always welcome :D
Hope to see more soon :)

You were right. I checked my infield size and they were about half as big as they needed to be. So I doubled it in size. Good catch. Thank you.

Hi JP. Thank you. Hopefully you will see a new one tomorrow. I am currently exporting Ebbets Field.

It's pretty good looking in my opinion lol. Although as I am exporting it I realized I forgot to add the warning track. Argh!
