American Midrise Building Team ?!

Hi everyone,

I really enjoy CS Skyline for its game mechanics. People, cars, trees, seaguls : great atmosphere ! ... Great potential !

But SC4 is still my favorite. Why ? Because of the BUILDINGS. I 'm crazy about american cities and buildings, and particularly old-style midrise american buildings. The actual game is quite poor... so we have to do the job ! If any of you are interested, please, anounce it. SC4 had the NYBT, and others... Will CS have the AMBT ? ;)

I did for buildings but there are not available on Steam, need to make the LODs before. All of these are brick buildings, small buildings (I'm a beginner) constructed beetween 1880 and 1940. I enjoy Chicago-style buildings like the Reliance Building, Rookery Building, Guaranty Building, Auditorium... so, more or less all the buildings which are today historial heritage.

One of my buildings. Yes I need better quality textures :)

The objective ! Just have to keep it in mind ;)

Thank you. And sorry for my english ;)

Yeah, European style cities are getting alot of awesome support for skylines, but so far american buildings have somewhat of a shortage. Granted if you look through steam workshop you can find some real jems for american stuff(Such as Feinbold's, as has just been mentioned.), I still often find myself struggling to create a U.S. style city in the game. I'm not gonna lie, most of the buildings in the unmodded game look pretty wonky and leave much to be desired. (Granted I'm much more of fan of International modernist style and art deco, which the game lacks, so i'm pretty biased.)

I can't mod myself sadly, too busy with college and it's never a thing that i've been able to practice.(llustration is a huge time sponge) Granted, I do support several artists I love on patreon, and if there were some kind of building team set up on that as well, I'd be willing to pledge some money towards it as well. ^^'

Yeah, I dream of making a pack of Chicago School buildings. I really hate the 4x4 maximum size for growables though as a lot of those buildings are larger than that.

Totally agree, we need larger growable plots for a project like this. For european buildings 4x4 is just fine most of the time but american buildings became much larger after steel skeleton construction was invented. A true American style requires 6x6 or 8x8 plots in best case.

Its true, I was thinking about Feinbild when I wrote this post :D ! But he is the only one I know ; there are probably several others people who want or create american buildings.

The 4x4 limit is a problem but we have to consider two or three things : a lot of american buildings, even from the Chicago School, are smaller than that. Olivier Typewriter Building, Brooks building, Marquette Building, even the Jewelers Building fits more or less in the 4x4 limit. (I have a doubt for the last one :) ) Make bigger but ploppable buildings is not a shame. And it's quite easy to transform a ploppable into a growable if the 4x4 limit is broken.

Shy Dude, if you dream of macking Chicago School buildings... : what are you wainting ? :D Ploppable buildings are really better than nothing. What are the buildings you want to do ?

In fact, the Chicago I like is the former Chicago (between 1920 and 1960) so we dont just need buildings but cars, trams, steam trains, metro, maybe horses, clothes...

If you're looking for some others to follow that have made some nice american buildings(not as much as feinbild of course, but there's quite a few american gems.), I can suggest:

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198073354910/myworkshopfiles/?appid=255710  (His are technically "Canadian" but alot of his mid century modern commercial buildings are similar in style to those made in the U.S at the time.)

And I completely agree with you on the vehicles as well. I'd personally like to see more american cars from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's, mainly because i'm kind of a sucker for the big hulking steel beasts of the period. (The 1960's car replacement mod was one of my favorites for simcity 4. heehee. <w< )

None of those buildings can work with the 4x4 growable limit besides the Oliver Building (be aware that 4x4 tiles is 32x32 meters). The Oliver building actually works nicely with the grid but its not a corner building so of course it'll be easy. Replicas of corner buildings that work within the 4x4 limit and the grid will be impossible, so it'll be best to go with fictional renditions of buildings which I actually think will be fun. Also, I think as a workaround for the limit, a set of similarly styled buildings can be made so that when they grow next to each other it looks like one wide building, I'm not sure if it'll look stupid though.

I still need to learn how to use Blender so that's why I haven't started anything yet.

Thank you AmericanAnomaly for your long list. I will check (and maybe contact ?) all of them.

I saw somewhere a few pictures where for 4x4corner buildings were virtually creating a 8x8 block and it was quite nice.

I use Sketchup actually, with a few mods. Not the best software for this, but its enough for me. :)
