On a U.S. Interstate, yes. It would be a disaster. On a European motorway, I'm sure they're more common, but they have a different kind of traffic flow system I'm sure, too. I am really itching to design some nice U.S. spaghetti bowl interchanges, for sure.

Let me assure you they're not common in highways/motorways on mainland Europe. I live in the Netherlands and we have NO roundabouts in the highways themselves. When you get off them you'll frequently encounter them and in the towns a lot as well. In the UK you do encounter some roundabouts in the motorways.

I like the roundabouts in CSL, but I'm going to mod (or use the steamworkshop) to get some smaller ones. The premade roundabouts are pretty big and in dense urban areas the roundabouts are fairly small (in total maybe 3x3 for space occupation).

UK is using roundabouts for all the exists on Motorways or A roads that fill the same function as a motorway (A1M, A46, A180) and the speed limit is 70mph.

When that drops to 30-40, the roundabout is on the A road, not separately (above or below).

In Greece mostly used is elevated junctions for the exits in H format with the main road under the -

I don't think Roundabouts are effective one may think in game; cars always go to whatever lane they need to turn. Moist of the time, you'll see them stack the right hand side even if they have make a left turn because once they get out of the roundabout, the building they need it's on the right. They need to lead into either one way streets or two+ lane roads for them have any practical effects on traffic.

More and more US freeways offramps are ending in roundabouts, it works quite well.  There are also many large format interfaces between surface streets and freeways that are actually just squished roundabouts.

This to me is the future of interfaces, SPUI's and Roundabouts, and only one of those can currently be constructed in Cities: Skylines.

Roundabout is pretty common in developing countries at least, cheap to built... but the effect... can be nightmare.

I don't really like them to be honest especially for places with crazy traffic flow (and circle not big enough). But it is great for medium - low traffic flow area.

As for the game- the only thing you want to build a custom roundabout with (or can), is highway lane.

Don't use any other types or they will end up with $%&^! tons of traffic light, not even that 6 lane one way road!

Hope they fix it in the future... People definitely want to build smaller roundabout, eg: with that 2 lane one way road.

We can use the highway ramp as workaround for now - but it only have 1 lane of course.  Probably not a good idea... everyone stuck at a standstill!!!

In the UK you don't see roundabouts built directly into the motorways but the exits are very often a roundabout grade separated from the main road

I wonder if the AI going to get lost to it, like many drivers in Britain when need to use it for first time

There are still a few out there ;)

We used to have a lot more like these, but they have all been replaced by other interchange types. Examples of this are knooppunt Ouderrijn (roundabout -> cloverleaf -> cloverturbine) and Prins Clausplein (used to be a two-level roundabout calls knoopunt Leidschendam. Nowadays it's a full-blown stack interchange).

There's another couple motorway roundabouts in the UK in the Bristol area, one is at the end of the M32 where it meets the M4, the other is at the end of the M49 where it meets the M48. Both of them are part of junctions, but are fully classified motorways right though, 70 MPH on a roundabout is much fun and legal too :).

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

There are several roundabouts on the M8 between Greenock and Edinburgh in Scotland.

I've noticed that roundabouts in Skylines do NOT operate the same traffic rules as in the UK. In the UK drivers wishing to enter the roundabout MUST give way/yield to traffic ON the roundabout. The traffic travelling on the roundabout ALWAYS has priority! In C Skylines I see traffic ON the roundabout GIVING WAY/YIELDING to traffic wishing to enter the roundabout. I believe that arrangement is common in a number of European countries- or its a "free for all" in France- especially on the roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe where it's "Wacky Races"!

Roundabouts are only a nightmare in countries where people can't really drive. For example, in Guadalajara going into La Glorieta de la Minerva can be very stressful.

    36760406.jpg

(Incidentally, it looks like the NAM roundabout statue was based on this foundtain hehehe)

But my 5 years in England made me love roundabouts. As the guy in the video above states, as long as you follow simple rules, roundabouts are pretty damn effective.

Of course, those new interchange designs are way better for large capacity highways.

There's a way to fix that though. Use highway sliplanes for the roundabout. it works great then.

It works as well with the 3 lane highway, but I think the inner most lane will not be used then.
