Hi All

This might not be directly related to Simcity 4, but I'm just wondering how many of you have purchased Cities Skylines? And if you have purchased it, have you played it? And what do you think about the game compared to Simcity 4?

Thx for reading.

SimCity 4 better than Cities Skylines change my mind.

I plan on buying Cities Skylines, but not right away.  I will wait awhile for them to work out some of the bugs and increase some of the content.  I didn't even by SimCity4.  I waited until SimCity 4 Deluxe came out before buying.

I so want to but my GPU (GeForce 310M) won't handle it. My laptop is 5 years old so it's time to upgrade to something that'll carry on for at least another 5 years and that upgrade isn't gonna happen for at least 6 months to a year from now. I'm pretty stoked at what I'm seeing with C:SL and how Paradox/CO is interacting with it's fan base and I'm looking foward to seeing what is coming down the road in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

But for now, it's SC4 all the way!

Waiting (impatiently) for my pre-order to unlock, I'm really excited to get going with Cities: Skylines, but yesterday whilst touching up some areas in a big city I'm working on in SC4 a few things do come to mind.

I'm not going to be able to reproduce the same quality of cities as I can now in SC4, the main issues being no terraforming, once you get used to making everything level and nice, it's hard to turn back to just letting the lay of the land control it. After that the choice of options in terms of decorating an area right now are pretty unlimited, if it doesn't exist I can just mod it into being too, so I know that I'm going to feel very restricted in skylines for a while.

Then again, if you look at the base game from Maxis and compare (which is much fairer imo), I can certainly see the potential of the game in the future. As for replicating SC4 and all it's options, whilst that would be nice, I'm really looking forward to doing something new, using new tools and just having some fun with it. If the mods elevate it above SC4, maybe I'll switch, but right now I think skylines will be for those moments I just want to have some fun, SC4 is where all my serious building will continue for the foreseeable future.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I have. What I've heard from the developers and the long term plans they have for the game sounds pretty good to me, I mean they're a team of 13 people, to create something above and beyond what we got with SC13 even with all the resources EA could throw behind it, tells me CO is a very dedicated team. Paradox is an ideal publisher too, they've managed to turn niche grand strategies into semi-mainstream titles... they'll likely be toeing the same kind of DLC model as Paradox which is slightly irritating but something I can live with (and have been doing with Europa Universalis IV), expansions are usually quarterly and there's a good deal of DLC to be had that you can pick up for cheap during steam sales. For the time being I'll be perfectly happy with the base game, if SC13 kept me going for a week despite it's massive limitations, this should keep me happy for a few months by itself.

No, but I'm following it.  It has definitely piqued my interest and I might jump at it once I feel I can better justify the expense.  I don't see it so much as a SC4 replacement but rather a worthwhile diversion and complement.

Haven't purchased it yet . . . in fact, I don't think I've purchased a PC game since SC4 . . . but C:S is going to be one that I will be picking up in the very near future, perhaps once RL calms down next week, after I've graded my students' finals.  I think Paradox/CO have gone the right direction, and the price point is very reasonable.  I don't plan on giving up SC4 upon picking up C:S, and NAM 33 for SC4 is still going to happen.

oh come on, you've got more important things than to keep your NAMites happy :P. Buy the game already ;)...No seriously though, I'm the same. This will be the first game I've bought in a long long time. But the extremely positive feedback, good reviews & awesome vidoes are just to hard to resist :ohyes: .

I've spend around 10 hours in the game and I must say I'm really impressed with it so far. It is definitely the best city building game to be released since SC4.

I haven't really experienced any bugs yet, only minor nuisances like you need a tonne of the same buildings to fulfill your city's needs. I.e. I needed to build around 5 landfills for a city of less than 20.000 people. Fortunately you can VERY easily import the landfill into the built in asset creator and change it's values (I have made a few versions of some utility buildings with 2 and 5 times the capacity and cost/upkeep to keep it balanced). The Steam workshop integration is also nice as you can download (and upload!!) new mods and buildings from within the game.

But I still don't get why I have to drag water pipes myself. That is one thing SC2013 got right. Keep it in the roads. Power lines are fine, but pipes are meh.

My pros:

  • Districts - It's a nice feature which I use a lot more than I thought. I would like more policies in the future though.
  • Zoning instead of plopping - I was never a fan of plopping.
  • Steam workshop integration
  • Built in map editor and asset editor
  • Map size. The 9 tiles are huge, the mod that unlocks all 25 tiles makes your city gigantic.
  • Performance. Smooth as a baby butt. No matter what size your city is (well I only got to 70.000 residents during those 10 hours)
  • Free camera mode. You can almost get down to the street level and move around the city.
  • Curvy roads that are not useless or look bad.
  • Freehand parks and paths. The citizens actually use the paths to get around the town.
  • Relocating buildings - plopped it just a tile too far to the left? relocate the building for a smaller fee instead of demolish and re-plop.
  • Easy mode as default - You only need like 30 minutes in order to make a profit if you just keep an eye on the RCI graph and from there you are basically forever rich. I haven't tried the "Hard mode" mod yet and there is also an "unlimited cash" mod and a "unlock all the things" mod for sandboxing.

My cons:

  • Water pipes - Oh god why?
  • Zoning - It could use some work. I.e. you need to de-zone an area before you can change the zoning and dezoning removes the buildings already there (i.e. when you want to upgrade a low density zone to a high density zone). Also I would like some drag-and-drop functionality with the "Fill" zone tool. The "drag zone" tool is ok, but a mix of the two would be appreciated.
  • Low asset count - My industrial areas are very repetitive but I guess a quick run through on the workshop can help with that.
  • No multiplayer - Why can't I play with my friends? Not in a SC2013 way, I want to build a single city together with a friend.
  • No regions and marketplace. Your city is an island. You need everything within your city limits.
  • Bus and metro line planning could use some work. I'e I haven't figured out how to fix a bus or metro line when I remove a stop or station. Also relocating a metro station is a bit of a pain.
  • Chirper (the twitter thing)! Pling.... Pling.... PLING, PLING!!! 250 unread messages and counting. Luckily there is a mod to disable it :D
  • The inhabitants counter seems odd. My city looks like it should have at least 150.000 citizens but it only reports 60-70.000. We're talking high rises here and a large suburban area as well.

^I agree about building a city together, it would be awesome (kind of like what you could do in SimCity 2000).  Each player could buy a certain amount of tiles for a certain price, it would be great fun imo.

I don't have this game (as yet) but let me point out that a multiplayer version requires that the city actually run on a server and they player become terminals if you have simultaneous access to the same area of memory (city).  This means a lot of messing about with reserved assets/conflicts, rollbacks, deadlocks, etc.  Order of magnitude of extra complication for programming about 100.

Don't ask for things, you might get them.

I'm pleased that the game comes in a Linux version, although some comments on steam suggest the linux version is pretty buggy. In any case the requirements are way beyond the specs of my laptop I'm using atm. It sounds like a good game to let mature for a while and maybe get on special - though the price is not exorbitant.

At the moment, it doesn't run due to a known problem that they are working on.  I finally got into their forum and added my specs to their problem thread.
