I thought it wasn't a very good teaser, it didn't particularly excite me, but I don't think the movie itself looks bad.

The memes got a belly laugh from me.  However the scene with the "racer" made me think of an in-ground oil tank.

I don't think so for three reasons:

 

1) R2-D2 is an institution, everybody loves it! Furthermore, if my memory doesn't fail to me, the only character appearing in all Star Wars movies together with Darth Vader.

2) R2-D2 is a mechanical droid, its lower part fits within the fighters. Instead, it is very difficult to me to imagine a full-mechanical critical contact within spherical surfaces. The droid in the picture looks like a recon droid. But this is just me.

All of you whining about Lucas need to remember this: if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have Star Wars today.  As for the teaser, pretty good for a teaser and more than enough to get me to watch the entire series over the past two nights.

I have mad respect for Lucas. The guy is quite visionary, he just went a bit crazy in the latter part of his career.

I find all the hubub over a trailer to be rather over the top. It doesn't tell you much about the movie but of course that's fine. Personally I'm waiting to see the movie itself before I draw any conclusions about anything or start analyzing it. No need to go too crazy now.

 

...of course I did go to see a movie I don't care about on Friday night just so I could see this trailer on the big screen before it, so maybe I shouldn't talk.

So...I thought the conflict of the plot had been resolved in the sixth movie Return of the Jedi. The story is over, right? The emperor is dead, Darth Vader came back from the dark side, and everyone lived happily ever after--right? That's why I've never understood the point of a 7th movie. The six we have really seem to explain the whole storyline quite thoroughly.

 

Are they basically re-starting the plot all over again and going with a whole new storyline?

Isn't it great to see new star wars isn't it!? I never really realised how much it was missed until I saw the trailer, so I watched A New Hope that night. Trailer does't say much, looks like star wars, a mix of the original and the prequels. It is only a teaser trailer, so I wasn't expecting any narrative content. But now I am eagerly awaiting the following trailers and December 2015.

 

The droid looks cool, a smart evolution of the R series droids, or a new series of droids. Especially smart for Tatooine, R2-D2 was never able to move well on that planet, and there have been some droids who move on spheres, I think Phantom or Clones had a couple on Tatooine, so its a smart evolution to me. 

 

As for the plot, theres a whole lot they can draw from, the emperor and Vader were killed, but lots of the empire was still functioning after the fall of the second death star. So maybe a new sith duo are starting to impose some dominance with the remaining stormtroopers or something. The end of the 6th movie showed lots of celebration, but essentially the whole galaxy would have been left in disarray after the leader of the galactic empire was killed, they'll probably look at some of the ambiguity or problems with forming a new republic. Looking forward to proper trailers hopefully describing what the plot might be

The FX guys got thoroughly carried away with the new (darkside?) light sabre with the hot guard and the dual blade.  Makes me think the whole thing is going to hokier than Episode I.

 

As for the ending of EP. VI, the darkside remains.  We just don't know, as yet, who the new evil master is.  The Force is like any coin, it has two faces.

I like the idea of new looking weapons. I don't think the new saber is particularly functional, but then again neither was Darth Maul's double bladed lightsaber.

 

From what I've heard the villain is an ancient evil. I think they're going for a Lord of the Rings angle where it's like: "some things that should not have been forgotten were lost."

Seems like the bad guy is going to be the Sauron of Sith Lords or something. Except he's not a giant eye that sits around and does nothing.

 

Well I suppose we might not even meet the big baddie of the new trilogy in this first film considering that in the original trilogy we didn't see the Emperor until the 2nd film.

 

My guess is that a remnant of the Empire goes looking for an ancient evil but what they find is even darker than they could have imagined.

 

I think The Force Awakens also refers to the idea that The Force went mostly dormant during the Empire years as kind of suggested in the prequels where the Jedi's ability to use the force diminished. Now it seems like there are people who are awakening to the force or becoming force sensitive.

 

I hope they drop a line insinuating that the medichlorian theory was junk science.

Stealing plot ideas from Tolkien is dangerous.  A lot of us have read the Silmarilion and the other backup volumes.  If this new evil is called Morgoth, then we'll know for sure.

 

The idea of an ancient forgotten evil isn't original to Tolkien. I would hardly call it stealing. By that measure, many of the plot devices and characters from the original Star Wars films were "stolen" from other sources like the Arthurian legends, stories like Dune, and films like Hidden Fortress and Flash Gordon.

 

If you analyze A New Hope you can see almost all of the basic themes and plot devices come from the Arthurian legends. Luke is Arthur, Obi Wan is Merlin, Han Solo is Lancelot, Leia is Guinevere, Darth Vader is the fallen Uther Pendragon/The Black Knight, The Lightsaber is Excalibur.

It seems like unlike Lucas, Abrams is very good with actors and knows how to bring their performances to the forefront while also being able to manage the details of a sci-fi world. I think one of Abrams' biggest weaknesses is that he doesn't give scenes room to breath, he's always rushing to action. The moment things settle down for just one second there has to be an explosion. It's much more fluid than George Lucas' style of directing in the prequels, but it would be nice if Abrams could tone it down just a bit.

Aye, the pacing is a problem and also important character development tends to happen when going from action piece to the next. I'm thinking Spock and Uhura's argument when flying with Kirk on that shuttle on Kronos. Some great character development from Spock, but in the middle of a mission?

I think JJ has learned a lot from criticism even going as far as apologizing for his abuse of lens flares. As a director JJ still has a lot to prove and I think that will push him to carefully consider everything he does in this movie. Unlike George Lucas who kinda went "mad king" on us in the prequels.

 

I think JJ's style of directing is a lot like Michael Bay's except without the massive in your face ego.

Yeah hard to really say that it subverted expectations. When you think Star Wars you think Tatooine, they showed that. You think X-Wings, they showed that. You think Stormtroopers, they showed that. You think Droids, they shows that. You think landspeeders, they showed that. You think Sith and Jedi, they showed one of the two. You think Lightsabers, they showed that but they kind of subverted expectation there by showing a new kind of lightsaber. You think Millennium Falcon, they showed that. You think Tie Fighters, they showed that.

 

The only expectation I had that was not met was that I'd see the original cast, but I guess they're saving that. Also, as pointed out in the Mr. Plinkett review, they didn't show anything that takes place in space, which kind of subverts expectations.
