I just saw on Cities XL's facebook page that they are making Cites XXL. Here is their little blurb:

We're thrilled to announced the return of the world's largest city builder, filled to the brim with new features allowing you to expand the scope of the game further than any Cities XL game before it. Introducing: Cities XXL!

Create and manage enormous cities on the latest version of the 'Cities' engine with multi-core support. With a smooth FPS no matter the size and complexity, there are no longer any limits on the richness and diversity of your sprawling metropolis. New features, buildings, and other details will be revealed over the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

What do you all think of this? Personally, I think this is too good to be true.

Alongside, Cities: Skylines, this will make 2015 an excellent year for city builders.

Apparently they're taking all, or some of the custom content from XLNation and making them direct features of the game. I already know that some of the workers have been in touch with several modders over on the site so it should be a great new addition to the franchise.

Although the Cities XL and Cities Skylines series' are being developed by different entities, I can't help but notice how close the graphics look in comparison. I actually held the impression that Monte Cristo may have released the project to Colossal Order, for money of course, considering the games utilize the same "Unity" engine. Imagine my surprise when I found out news to the contrary.

Why use the same engine? If I'd were to develop a city builder, I'd want it to look completely different from any other city builder. It just seems odd to me. However, since Cities XL, originally Cities Unlimited, existed before Cities Skylines, my surprise should be aimed at Colossal Order.

They both look similar because they both try to imitate real life buildings in a way that makes sense in a game. Cities XXL supposedly has either a new engine or a highly modified one because it will support multi-core processors for the first time and that is no small feat.

Hopefully Cities XXL and the modders together can pull it off.

I'd be willing to buy an OS X version of Cities XXL that is quite stable and isn't prone to crashing and ram leaks like  Cities XL (that's why I quite  playing XL)...

If they can improve the simulation and data views to rival Maxis, then I'll have a hard time resisting.

Also Focus please minimize or make the achievements translucent so they don't take up my the middle part of my screen when they occur (I hate this!)

If Colossal Order shocks the world in succeeding with Cities: Skylines being a good game, then I'll be tempted.

I plan to take  a wait and see approach with both, since I have been burned with every city builder/simulator since Simcity 3000 (Simcity 3000U came out 10 months later)!

I'll purchase the better of the two... I don't have enough time or room in my life for both on top of the simulators I already play!

Also I have  huge backlog of games to complete, so I am good on the game front for a long while...

Best luck to them both, hopefully they won't go bankrupt like the rest did.

    1. The simulation and the visuals were designed from the beginning to not correspond on a 1 to 1 basis. They could change this for Cities XXL.

    2. You can turn off achievements in the menu if you want.

I wasn't talking about 1:1 simulation per say, as in the simulation its self is significant bugged or off. Happiness and economy regularly aren't affected by the population and buildings. This is far worse than any Simcity.

I know you can turn off the achievements, though you lose the bonus money for achieving them.

I want them to be less intrusive!

Just watched the new (official?) trailer.  Their facebook page is about as informative as the south end of a horse going north, as usual.  Do we have a release date prospect?

Here is said video for everyone here to see:

Here is a description of the game from FHI themselves:

The world’s largest city builder is back!

The Cities XL franchise returns with Cities XXL: a bigger, better city builder pushing the city limits to the edge of your imagination, as seen in the stunning world reveal trailer. Running on a vastly improved game engine, Cities XXL offers classic and extended city-building content, including over 1000+ buildings, 70+ maps including new landscapes and environments, and ecological features making CitiesXXL the ‘greenest’ Cities XL game yet.

Discover in the first Cities XXL video the sprawling cityscapes and city-life in action, to get a sense of the scale and grandeur of the game:

As you’ll see in the video, CitiesXXL lets you design and build a sprawling metropolis across many different landscapes and maps, with varying available resources – from oil to fertile farm land – to keep the denizens of your city content. Featuring four classes of citizens spanning four densities of housing, you’ll watch as your cosmopolitan paradise grows from a quiet suburban town to huge economic powerhouse.

With varying road-sizes, including curved roads, bridges, and tunnels unlocked from the start, you’ll be able to plan the entrance to your city and its layout before you start plotting its city-scape. As it grows, take advantage of a unique richly detailed street-level view, and meet the citizens as they drive to work, ski, play basketball, or even parachute of the top of towers in unprecedented detail for the genre.

CitiesXXL features low-level city management mechanics, such as local air and noise pollution levels illustrated with the new stream-lined UI, and beauty hot-spots suitable for holiday locations to supplement cash-flow.

At citizen management level, you’ll be able to track a person’s route to work in order to best manage transport from sea, underground and over-ground rail, or air. Cut-down on traffic queues with the park and ride and busses, or even bike hire – reducing that carbon footprint!

Now with Steam Workshop support and streamlined modding, it has never been easier and quicker to share and download user-created content for a Cities XL game. With Cities XXL, you’ll be able to use widely available free tools online to create your content and upload it to the Steam Workshop, for all players to download it right through Steam!

To find out why Cities XXL helps you to build a bigger, better world, see the feature break-down below:

    - Over 70 huge maps across multiple terrains and landscapes, from the tropics to the mountains and all in between.

    - Region specific roads to match your country: French, English, German, etc.

    - Over 1000 buildings, many with civilian activity animations to enjoy at street level

    - Greener options for the environment conscious, such as the park and ride, bike hire, and ability to upgrade industrial buildings to reduce emissions

    - Unprecedented detail for the city builder genre, with multiple sky-boxes to choose from and a dynamic time-of-day

    - Steam Workshop support to easily create, share and download new content

The facebook page is not exactly the most informative but this blurb from the YouTube video description is.

    Hopefully helpful,

    --Ocram

Wonder what provision there is for custom content.  And I hope I don't have to get this from Steam.

There is already mod support and mod tools. XLNation has a lot of mods. I hope Steam Workshop is merely an extra way to get mods.

After watching both trailers and some other You tube videos on both of these new prospective games, I have come to the conclusion that I am skeptical at best on both titles...

XXL.. After watching this title release title after title never really improving itself, I am skeptical that XXL will be nothing more then another X in the title.  I do see the new engine and some Steam Workshop access, and all that may come with that is promising, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth when this company released basically the same game with little improvement.

Skyline... Well, I can see that they do want to pick up the pieces for Simcity 5, and that is all fine and dandy, but I don't need to see a game that looks and feels like Simcity 5 no matter that it opened all the options we wish we had on the release.  I would prefer to see a new game so that I can stuff the thought of Simcity 5 deep in the past and move on.

I don't really see the complication to building these games and having them give what the Simmers want.  I have been playing the Simcity franchise since the original game played on my 8086, with all the advances in computing you would think that we would have an awesome sandbox city building game by now that allowed us as a builder to build the way we want to build.

I am happy to see that there are two games slated for release this year that will build competition between the two and hopefully the response will be a competent release between the two of them.  And possible, maybe Simcity 5 would jump back into the ring to defend their name and turn the tarnished game franchise into something playable.

Though I'm looking forward to this new game, I agree with Morningstar.

I've always seen cities xl as the best city builder out there. Hopefully this time they'll fix the sounds since for me this contributes to making the sim world feel real. And hopefully we'll see trains and ferries this time.

    I wait for Skylines.

This so much. Don't get your hopes up, people, I did last time! I bought Cities XL, turned out it was VERY average. Then they released Cities XL next year as a new game and I was stupid enough to believe it will be better, I bought it. THEY CHANGED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, just added new buildings. And then next year they did it again.

And now they are trying to sell it ONE MORE TIME? No freaking way. That one more "X" in "XXL" won't fool me, lol.

And even if they did make more changes this time, Im not gonna support them, they lost absolutely everything in my eyes because of what they did before, I will never buy anything from them ever again.

Considering Cities XXL and Cities Skylines are using the same engine, which is why they look similar, I can't see how the 2 games are going to be different from one another.

Yes, I agree that Skylines may be feature-rich, compared to previous XL versions, but the city builder and simulation would most likely be the same, as they're using an identical platform.

You're comparing games with robust storylines, however open world, with "true" sandbox games. As the titles you've mentioned use the same engine, the story indeed erased certain similarities due to the story itself. There's no "story" with city builders, or simulations, or whatever one identifies with these titles. The truth of the matter as that as people play these games, especially as they play these games for 100+ hours, and longer, subtle differences won't make much of a difference to gameplay. What we need is a moderate gaming advancement, and not titles competing against one another while offering minor, yet different, features.

If they would just fix the mouse view control, I would buy this thing.  Again..  I hate the 'forced' zoom levels and wish they just gave us totally Free Control of the zoom level.  Even the zoom view mod didn't really help a lot, but it was something I did use..

They said that they built a new engine with much better performance. That means that the memory leak is almost certainly gone. There might be other issues but I don't know for certain what they will be.

Also their facebook page links to their official website with an article on "green" and "eco-friendly" buildings and options.
