Hibernation depends on the system remaining undisturbed.  Try unplugging your mouse when you leave so that casual vibrations don't pull the system out of hibernate.  I've noticed that my TV will activate my system if there is a loud enough sound that may jar the mouse, however, since my system requires an activation password, it goes back to sleep pretty quickly.

Yeah, my PC wakes up from sleep when doors are opened or shut or if I jump/fall down/collapse onto my bed, my computer wakes up. That means I remove the batteries from my mouse before I go to bed or leave (they drain pretty fast as well).

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Batteries in a mouse?  Mine is powered over the USB cable that attaches it to the box.  Wireless this and that just increases your costs for very little advantage.  I can't imaging having batteries and the associated weight in a mouse just to get rid of a cable, to say nothing about the on-going expense of batteries to drive a transmitter.  Somebody saw you coming, eh?

I've had this problem at work.  I've always preferred using gaming mice for CAD work - but a few years ago my last one died and I found that a decent corded one generally cannot be had, going the usual retail route at least.  So I just settled for the only corded mouse they had - a generic Dynex brand with a scroll wheel and only 2 function keys (only at work have I ever bothered to use those).  Blah.

Cordless mice and accessories have their uses, but a workplace PC is one situation where they are superfluous.

I use wireless mouse where it is appropriate. In my house, we have 2 laptops and 1 PC. In one of the laptop's area, it's pretty cramped with wires and it's just a mess. So I just use a wireless mouse to reduce clutter in that area.

A wireless mouse is also quite convenient to use with a HTPC (home theater PC for the acronym-challenged :D).

BTW: update the poll please. maybe remove all UNSUPPORTED versions of windows, like the just recently ditched version Windows XP. And add 8.1 instead of 9.

Speaking of which, Microsoft is skipping windows 9 and moving to windows 10 next year.

Still not allowed to update this one to 8.1 :(

Hope i can the Win10

Some people still consider XP to be the best version of Windows, and I don't blame them. If I knew an older person who still used XP or even Vista, I'd be really hesitant to upgrade it (or any of the other software) because they would have a much harder time figuring out the new OS than most of us younger people would.

Windows 7 is the best in my opinion. It gives XP a fresh look without going overboard, like Windows 8 did.

Windows 8 went crazy with the start screen. Touchscreen on a PC is overwhelming.

  Chuckled a bit on that one... That was me until a few months ago when I went from Xp straight to Win8.1 at home and Xp to Win7 at work (and coincidentally, also went from Office 2007 to 2013 and Office 2010 to 2013 respectively), and haven't looked back since. And to be honest, I miss my home system while at work more than I miss my work system while at home. Guess those tiles and 'flat' graphics are growing on me.  :D

I've always held that the biggest hurdle for me was when I went from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95... That was rough...

I beg to differ.  I am an older person.  I would still be on XP if I was still on windows.  This month, I will take the automatic update from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10.  I like to keep current.  I happen to be 77 years old.

And if I was still on XP, I would at least look at Windows 10.  There is always room for hope.

Sorry, I figured you'd respond in this way. But do realize the average older person has not been around computers since 1962! :)

Couldn't resist the bait you dangled.  They guy I went to London, Ontario with yesterday is another serious computer user.  He is my volunteer driver, and I spent the whole day having medical tests yesterday.  We had a nice long chat about computer use on the way home.  Seem we are both looking for a new printer, and it is very hard to find one that isn't a four-in-one any more.  The vendors have gone nutz.

He is also an older person, not quite as old as I.  He is also the former Reeve of this county.

My grandmother has used windows since 98 because her daughters (my mother and aunts) gift her new computers every once in a while. Currently she uses an all-in-one touchscreen desktop with a huge screen (I think 23 or 24 inch, full HD, even though they make 4K touchscreens smaller now...) that is obviously running Windows 8 of some sort (not sure if she upgraded to 8.1). My mother's first computer was a Windows 95 and my first was an office surplus beige box running Windows 98 (before XP came out but after 2000 came out). MY auntie even gave my grandmother an iPhone (and later upgraded it when she had the opportunity).

A close friend of my grandmother might just be better at certain aspects of computers than myself (and I have upgraded parts (hardware), programs (software), as well as OS (including Linux on my lowest end and oldest PC and my only laptop, which is rather low-end and old) and firmware) and she teaches (or at least used to teach, not sure if she still does, haven't seen her for a year or two) senior citizens how to use the computer.

As for myself, I am pretty sure that I have already stated that I use Linux Mint on my low end computers, Windows 7 on my desktop, and have used Windows 8 on my grandmother's computer and at my college (which I earned a general AA at but have to take a spring quarter Organic Chemistry class to get two transferable AS degrees at the same time).

Also, the only reason I have a wireless mouse is because my new computer does not support the old plugs for keyboards and mice anymore (only USB) and I wanted a wireless keyboard. I still have my USB laser mouse, an old grey ball mouse with the old-fashioned plug, and a sleek, black keyboard with the old type of plug.

Don't even! I still have Windows 2003 on my old PC! The thing's so outdated, it took so long to boot up! Then it would give me the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).  :dead:

Both of my paternal grandparents have always needed help with computers from me, so I guess that's where I get the impression that older people are not as good with computers as younger people are.

When I was still teaching, the college had a night school program I taught called Computers for Seniors.  It was practically free, and was usually well attended.  Ran for five nights, once a week.  What most seniors want is e-mail and/or social media.  Very few are interested in applications like Office.

Suggest you requote that.  I fixed the error in participle choice.

MSN Explorer? I remember that thing. I used it for a time on my computer, back when I was really young, so young that my parents enabled the "Parental controls" feature in the browser. I remembered that it blocked websites which were completely safe, including a map website (which my dad quickly unblocked, of course). I remember when I tried to go on Wikipedia, and it was blocked too! So I finally stopped using that browser and just went over to IE. And, IIRC, this was back when IE7 was brand-new, and somehow I actually thought it was good! :O Well, it was good back then, and that was several years before I started using Firefox. I don't remember why I ditched IE; maybe that's a good thing. :P Currently, I use Chrome.

It is amazing that I'm really getting this nostalgic feeling whenever I see a screenshot with the XP taskbar and the Luna shell in it. I wanna load it up in a VM at some point! (I think our XP disc is around here somewhere...maybe.)
