I see the Greek Myth came fourth.  Not surprising if the trailers were any sample.  They were very confused and I wondered what artistic license was taken with it, considering some of the things require divine intervention.

when you cant even make the trailer about Hercules look interesting the movie itself is going to tank.

Guardians was a fun movie though, from a  comic series id never even heard of before this year, it was fun to watch.

^ Well, allow me to update you on The Passion of the Christ.

A scholarly edition in the original languages (Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin) with sub-titles.  Rated R for Religious reasons no doubt.  Made a bundle so far and apparently has international appeal.  I guess I'll have to make a effort to see it sometime.

Extremely graphic, Gibson didn't sugarcoat anything.

Maybe a little gory, but it is probably as true to life at that time as he could make it.  Some liberties were apparently taken, but considering that life in general was short, dark and ugly then, people shouldn't be shocked.  Far too many Biblical epics have been coated with all kinds of sugary icing.  BTW, current archaeological evidence says the Romans couldn't afford the lumber for a T shaped cross,  They used X's with the victim facing the wood.

@blade2k5 -- For you to see a movie more than once is quite a recommendation.

You have no idea how many times I can watch a movie I like.  Take Star Wars for instance, the most viewed film for me with well over 400 views over the past 37 years.  In fact. the summer of '77 I was at the theater watching SW two-three times a day all summer.

As have I, starting at around age six.  When I was a kid, books were the only solo entertainment.  There were no electronic media except radio, which during the day ran soap operas.  The rest was mostly adult content except between 1700-1900 when most serials like "The Lone Ranger" ran as well as things like "Terry and the Pirates".  Because of blackout regulations during the war, the radio was kept off after dark.

Before I downsized into this place I had a room full of library stacks.  Now, I hardly read anything except Internet content because the library around here is too far away, and I can't afford to purchase many books any more.  For example, I had two full shelves on yachting, navigation, and sea adventures.  Now in the library of one of my sailing friends who lives in the Bahamas.  I used to be a regular bookworm as an escape from all the business BS I endured during the day.

I'm mostly into sci-fi/fantasy and have read thousands of books in that genre.  From Perry Rhodan to Star Wars to LotR to the Shannara series (the first 15 books in the series plus The Word and the Void trilogy) to A Song Of Ice And Fire series and the list goes on and on.

Looks like Guardians will outpace Captain America as Marvels top domestic film this year.  Still no $300M domestic movie yet, but I bet that Hunger Games movie yet to come soon will cross that mark easily.

    And why is that amazing?

It's unexpected :) you would figure that many people would go see an action movie such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I didn't go see Turtles even though it's an 'action' movie because it's just too silly for my tastes and not my demographic.  Besides, there are those of us out in the world who raised those who were into Turtles back in the 80s.  In other words, it doesn't mean we're going to flock to theaters to go see and 'action' movie for the sake of it being an 'action' movie or because our children grew up loving the Turtles.  Some of us were more familiar with Guardians stemming from our childhoods even the media would have you believe otherwise.  So there's nothing really amazing about that, just the fact the media got it wrong in all their petty predictions that left egg on their face.  It's no surprise to me at all that Guardians is crushing Turtles at the box office as I had Guardians pegged to finish it's domestic run at $250M+ and it's well on it's way there.  Turtles will struggle to get anywhere near a $200M domestic run.

I think you're confused a bit.  Action is a broad term and can be found in sci-fi and sci-fi/fantasy as well, in which both Turtles and Guardians falls under.

Action movies are an escape for people who live rather dull lives.

Coming from you, it's not a surprise you think his way.  Oh, and so are all other genres nothing more than escapes from dull lives as you so eloquently put it.
