Star Wars Episode VII

Disney announces ...

What role will Andy Serkis get? I hope it's not all green screen and computer animation. I'd like to see him in a live part.

As for the old timers, it is more than a generation since the original episode IV, so the star crossed lovers should be grandparents, or nearly and Luke should be the grand old Jedi knight in place of Yoda.

Disney is famous for musicals. I hope this isn't going to be one of them. "Some day my ring will come"?

Use the Schwartz?

Depending on the outcome of this movie (and the games), then Disney (and EA) could either be responsible for saving or destroying Star Wars.

--Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

As long as they don't have a character named Goodgulf (From the Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon)

JJ is great at action and emotionally charged scenes, BUT he lacks subtly and often sacrifices logic, pacing and restraint for the sake of emotion. Star Trek Into Darkness suffered from this and for me anyway it didn't have that spark, it didn't have the soul of ST. Perhaps it didn't help that JJ was far more the Star Wars fan and less into Star Trek.

My gut feeling is that Star Wars VII will be a good movie but it will lack soul, and for fans of the original trilogy that could be a big disappointment. Another problem will be Disney and it will insist on a PG-13 rating and to make it kid-friendly. An even bigger problem is the lack of Palpatine, God I love the Emperor and his evilness. So to come up with a riveting story is yet another challenge.

So God help JJ. Even more so if Disney force him to squeeze in a musical number, I think everybody would die from the embarrassment...

    Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

    This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

How is this a problem? Of the six existing movies, one (Revenge of the Sith) is rated PG-13 and the others are all rated PG. Star Wars always has been family friendly.

And while Disney is known for imposing tough standards on their products aimed specifically at children, they do not impose those same standards on products which are also aimed at adults. Consider this: has anything in the current generation of Marvel movies struck you as being inordinately "clean"? Of course not, and Star Wars will be no different.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

The prequels sucked. I have little hope for the third trilogy.

The biggest problem was Jar Jar Binks. Even Scrappy has a bigger fanbase.

Star Wars has always been PG-13 hasn't it? And the last few movies were directly aimed at children.

An over-written and over-played comic relief.  The CGI guys must have been embarrassed.

Since VII is supposed to be a VI follow on, hope this nonsense is over.

I agree. When I saw the new Star Trek movie (have only seen the first so far) to me JJ was making a Star Trek movie as if it were a Star Wars movie. I think he'll be a much better fit with Star Wars.

And anyone will be a better fit than George Lucas. :)

I haven't done any reading about what's going to be in the movie or what any of the fan speculation is. But as far as Palpatine goes, in the expanded Star Wars universe he made a bunch of clones of himself and spread them across the galaxy. There's a huuuge amount of semi-canon material from all the books and things to draw from, plus whatever Lucas was thinking for them.

Well, it is possible that George Lucas has shot his bolt or failed to keep up with current taste.  The original SW trilogy was on a steady down slope after IV.  It just got hokier and hokier heading for a final happy ending.  While the movies were exciting,

I think a lot of it was played for laughs, some of them too subtle for younger audiences.  Was Jabba the Hut an allegory for the United States government?

"Children's" entertainment is often a (thinly) disguised political satire.  See the works of Charles Lutwige Dodson (Lewis Carroll) in that regard.

I liked four the best. But i thought Vader being Lukes father was a wrong move. Also Palps shoulda been knifed ala Caesar. I read some exp uni books. Meh. Return to the ways of the fourth and jj shall succeed. As to Binks.. An everest among Himalayans. Much of the characters were... No.

IV, the original in 1977, was the best for several reasons.  The CGI was new, the story was kind of Robin Hoodish, and the bad guys were really bad.  Then in V we get Lando the sociopath.  Things start going down hill.  VI was a rescue opera.  I - III mere pot boilers.

Of the the original trilogy I found episode IV to be the slowest and weakest, V was a lot stronger and VI is my favourite simply because of every scene with Palpatine.

So Daisy Ridley is going to be Jania solo?

They just threw out the expanded universe stuff as not cannon now, so who knows?  I am sorta glad the EU has been declared not cannon, that guarantees that boring Thrawn trilogy will never see the silver screen.  Best news ever.

As for how I would rank the series, here goes....

    1. E4 (no SW film will ever top the first.)

    2. E3

    3. E6

    4. E2

    5. E5 (the most boring of the series.)

    6. E1 ( waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Jar Jar.  Film would have been a lot better if Darth Maul had had more screen time.)

I am not a fan of Star Wars, but many of you have forgotten the greatest Star Wars film of all time - Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008).

To refresh your memory, here's a screenshot of it:

Pretty good rendition of the old pot boiler.  I am not expecting anything better from the new effort.  I think that horse has run its races and since its a gelding, can only be put out to pasture.
