Do you think offline mode is EA saying "We give up - we won't have to make any more expansions or waste money on this if we set the modders loose on it"?

The Simcity news front has been pretty quiet since the patch.

I hope not. I'm a bit optimistic that now we have 'offline mode' they will be thinking about making it a working single player regional game. But you are correct that over on the EA forum it doesn't say much about what they're working on; I think it only mentions bug fixes for offline mode. Perhaps they can stealth release the single player game with a offline great-works expansion pack, or similar, to save any u-turn embarrassment.

They must realise that if they fix up the regional play for offline mode they can keep selling it for years however. Fingers crossed.

I think I've said this many times before offline mode was even thought of by EA (that they'd give up on the game once an offline mode was made), so I think you're right.

Another question is if they really are giving up on the game how much longer will the online servers stay online?

I certainly hope they don't "give up". This game stumbled a lot, but I think it still has potential with expansions and mods. I too have noticed EA has been super quiet since Offline launched, and I've been wondering if that has to do with all of the turnover in EA recently. Stone Librande left, Ocean Quigly left, I don't know what happened to Lucy Bradshaw, probably more turnover I can't think of right now. I'm hoping they come back soon with news of a new expansion or patches.

To be honest, I'm not sure I care about the offline mode now. Too little, too late I think. Maybe the modders can make something spectacular out of it, but I'm not sure it has enough of a foundation to really build anything special on. Of course, they worked miracles with SC4, so... I'll keep an eye on it. But the general gameplay just doesn't interest me.

I avoided buying it initially because of the online requirement, took the "wait and see" approach - maybe, just maybe, it would be worth the hassle. Had it been offline from the start I would've dumped $$$ on the "special edition" version of it day-one - and regretted it. So in a way I guess I should be thankful for the online bit.

But it seems since it was released it's too clean, too simple, too "casual." I've looked at a few CJ's and YouTube videos, some from long-time veterans who've built cities I swear I could actually live in for real, they were so well done - in SC4. Sometimes even without a lot of "mods" involved. Those same "gods of SimCity" ... all their cities in this one seem to look about the same to me. Small, cartoonish, barely interesting, and not the least bit realistic at all. And I know it's not their fault - it's what they have to work with. It's like someone took away their canvas, all their paints and brushes, and gave them an 8-color box of crayons and a pad of Post-It notes.

Now, I'm even skeptical the modders can really make something of it. Add a few more crayons to the box? But they're still crayons. I'll be very glad to be proven wrong, if they can somehow turn this pumpkin around. But I ain't holding my breath.

Simply put, the key to turning this pumpkin around is increasing the city tile size. I'll go out on a limb and guarantee the game would take off. I see increasing the tile size as the holy grail of SC2013 modding. Whoever can crack it should get Modder of the Year...

Looks like something is in the works, but no idea on if it will fix core issues or just some fixes for offline mode:

Update 10.1 is next and we'll have information on this soon. This update is to address some items we have had feedback for since Update 10 released.  - MaxisBazajaytee, 4/30/14

I like the off line concept but I don't understand why I have to get connected on line to play offline. One of lifes many quirks. I like playing multi player regions because technologies evolve faster when other cities are specializing in different areas and at varying growth rates. It's great to have the Academy technologies researched out even if you're not planning to use them right away and Omega drones are useful in city services. I would love to see these mods in multiplayer mode too.

Is there an advantage to playing online alone over offline? I don't play online much at all.

There is no advantage to playing online alone.  The point is to play with other people, to work somewhat interactively with other people.  Coming back to this game after a 10 year or so hiatus, it's very fun to me and I'm looking forward to playing with other people.  Yes, there are flaws but it's fun if you accept some of this stuff as challenges.  Offline play is great, but a vanilla game can still be fun.  Maybe it's because I'm looking at it with fresh eyes and minimal preconceptions that I'm able to enjoy it more.

I think if Maxis has given up, or if EA has given up by now, the servers would be either unusable or gone. They have taken their minds off of Simcity temporarily, and focused on The Sims 4 and Simcity Buildit. They will be very preoccupied with fixing Simcity Buildit after it's unannounced launch, and making dozens of Sims 4 expansions, as usual. So, just hold your horses and get some mods in the meantime, or become a modder.

That's some nice inside to this wonderful game of ours. :)

This is what I am hoping for. They released an update for us to move our multiplayer cities offline, but I just hope they will work with the community again so we can have more amazing SimCities. :D

If there are ever ways to import my new BATs into the game I might be interested in helping out with other modding projects.  The game itself has its + and - but its been a while since any new modding breakthroughs have emerged.

I'm pretty sure BATs will never work with the way SimCity (2013) uses building models to render in-game buildings. The engine has been completely rewritten, so what the modders have done (with collaboration from the Devs) is pretty amazing in itself.

Right now, it's not about transferring what we have on SimCity 4 to the new SimCity. It's about making this game what we, the community, want and enjoying the new things the Devs has provided to us instead of working against what was made to make things which won't benefit a lot.

You can always ask people from SUGC if you want to get into modding projects. I made my first mod in 3 hours, with help from 4 people, and with 1 purpose: to make something awesome, without knowing anything about code and such. The reason why no modding breakthroughs are discovered is because nobody is actively making those discoveries, which is because there is only one source of mods right now: SUGC.

More just need to ask the simple, "How do I start modding?" and the veterans and experienced people of modding will provide for that need.

This game is awesome, and I want to make it even more so.

when you first start to play offline it  connects to  the internet like it would with multiplayer, but if you keep playing single player it will stop connecting to the internet so the loading time is faster[and im not saying that you cant play multiplayer anymore, im just saying if you play singleplayer for  a while it wont take as long to load]
