Commuters not using NWM

Hi guys,

Basically, I have the following problem. I have a NWM AVE-6 boulevard for express traffic, that is sided by two one-way roads for local traffic (an example in real life is the Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, NYC). However, my commuters are preferring the OWR instead of the NWM AVE-6 I laid out for them. Now I know this is because OWR is considered faster than roads (which is the underlying network for the AVE-6), but I was wondering whether there is something I can do to force my commuters to take the AVE-6 instead. Or should I just demolish the OWR and replace it by a simple road?

First, make sure that the Ave-6 does actually function, by temporarily demolishing the OWR.

If it does function, then yeah I guess you just need to do something about the OWR. You can't force the sims to use a road they don't want to, except if you close off the unwanted alternative route.

Avenues/roads = 50Km/h

OWR = 75 km/h

RHW = 150km/h

Sims will preffer to use the fastest route instead of the shortest road, when your OWR begins to overcrowd, they'll start to use your ave 6. Look, they're still using your ave 6 connection to another city cuz it's the only route to their destination.

    Whew, I didn't know the speed difference was that big. Also, I didn't know that once the OWR is overcrowded, they will use the AVE-6. In that case, maybe I'll leave it like that.

    Also, I know that the AVE-6 is the only connection to the other city, because I did it on purpose. Since the OWR should be for local traffic, I don't want any intercity traffic on that. :)

    The issue arises because there is a long stretch of one-way in a single direction. If the one-way alternates in direction between links with the NWM this would break-up the 'rat-run' (obviously the one-ways would need to connect to the NWM with a road or street not a one-way). Thus the one-ways would serve as very local distributors and force longer-distance traffic on to the NWM

    I tried your suggestion, and this is the result:

    I guess what I need is some kind of "transit enable delay lot", which adds an extra amount of time when driving over the OWR, however I am not sure whether such thing exists...

    Why not make the AVE a RHW? It would be much faster and more used.

    For reality purism. :-) The AVE-6 looks way better in a suburb than a RHW-6C... Ah well, I guess one can't have all at once.

    You could replace your AVE-6 with a pair of OWR-3's.  They're not exactly the same in appearance, but they certainly will give you the effect you want.

    Looks like I was too optimistic in my suggestion. Clearly it might only work if the distance between the NWM and the one-way distributor roads was greater. Possibly if the properties were not facing toward the NWM but away from it and the one-way was at the side of the properties away from the NWM - but I haven't calculated the distance/speed ratios.

    Speeds are never constant, and it gets pretty hard to calculate a reliable distance-speed ratio considering that the amount of usage a network receives will decrease a network's speed. Networks are at their fastest (1.3 times the "advertised speed") when they're completely empty, and their speed begins to decline the more it's used, down to 0.3 times the "advertised speed" when the network is 2.5 times over its "advertised capacity".

    Here's a hypothesis for you to try out: If you're already using a high-capacity version of the Traffic Simulator (like high or ultra), switch it out for something that's lower-capacity, like low. If the OWRs gets jammed sooner, Sims might resort to other faster routes, like the AVE-6.

    Allright, I found I solution with a good eye-candy/AVE-6 usage ratio.

    I added 1 tile of RHW-6C after each second intersection. It isn't really notable, and well, it seems to work.

    Thanks for the advice guys!
