Is it European?

It is not hosted in Europe.

Wow! Thats really neat Benedict

Thanks!

I'd say it's a map of the Brussels tram network, but that's just because I don't know many other complex and large networks :P I know this can't possibly be right, I even doubt if it is possible to make a map like that of the network (it's one of the world's largest - maybe a challenge for you? :P )

Edit: right, it said rail, I forgot that for a short while... You say 'railroad group', does that mean it is a network with several operators/concessions?

I doubt I could do a complex system of tramlines as easily - plus it would be very time consuming.

Yes, there three main groupings of the mystery map - the purple grouping is added today.

This map may need more hints. :P

And that is a hint all of itself!

@Benedict: You said railroad, so I'm guessing that it's American?

The raildoads are hosted in America.

So here's what we also know about the mystery map...

  • Rail map (not a metro/subway/underground system)
  • Not German ICE or an S-bahn
  • Not Amtrak
  • Not a UK rail system

Today one additional railroad (purple) is added, as well as one of the ferry lines (teal).

Playing around with tram maps again. This is the longest line (I think) and runs on the most highly utilised corridor, so I've been trying a few new things on it...

Is it Metro North?

Metro North have way more stations than this map.

Maybe it's fictional.

Cities in Motion map this time around, more accurately, the district map for the 2012 Community City that was made by a bunch of people on CiMexchange. I built East Harriet, and detailed the whole map with little props (since in CiM's map editor, you have to plop down everything including mailboxes and streetlights)

@ Joe 90 - that is fantastic as always. I really really like the 'stacked' lines and stations - it gives the map a clean, modern, streamlined look compared to showing full thickness of all the connecting lines. It also emphasizes the line the map focuses on - great idea

@ kj3400 - it isn't Metro North

@ devilreborn - it isn't from a fictional source - you can ride on the lines

@ Linoa06 - that is a stunning map of neighborhoods

So here's what we also know about the mystery map

- Rail map (not a metro/subway/underground system)

- Not German ICE or an S-bahn

- Not Amtrak

- Not a UK rail system

- Hosted in the US, but not Metro North

- Not from a fictional source

Today I added the last rail line (bright blue) and the two remaining ferry lines (brown, tourquise)... and one final clue :)

Ok, is it the MBTA commuter rail?

It's gotta be on the coast, which really limits the amount of cities.

You know, I've been thinking about doing a train map like this for one/a group of my lines...

Oh right! Why didn't I notice earlier? It's the second life railroad thing that goes through Hetcetora Atoll and that other place I couldn't remember.

Second Life Railroad, according to Google's image search function of that (weird) icon.

It is fictional after all. No wonder why I couldn't guess this one.

We have a winner! I based the colors on the map created by Linoa06.

I really struggled with how to answer your 'is it fictional' question. I consider 'virtual' to be different to 'fictional'. If you have an avatar in second life you can ride along the railroad.

This is also why I said the railroads were 'hosted' in America - a clue to the fact that it is based on servers rather than real life.

OK, on with the show with a new mystery circular map:

^ I agree. Has to be DC

In other news, I have just completed a (unintentionally Moscow Styled) map of my national High Speed lines and National Rail lines.

The colored lines are the High Speeds, but much of the infrastructure coincides with local National Rail lines.

Dark grey are local NR stops, black are HSR stops and terminals, light grey are the names of NR services, and pink are political markings.

* not at all to scale: Southway is more than 3 times as lone as North Shore, and Gateway is more than three times as lone as Midlands.

Close enough to Vivapanda's S-Tog network.

well done!

Vivapanda's S-Tog as circles:

heimen.jpg

But I actually thought it would be fun to draw them as hexagons to match the S symbol:

Can you look at the CityRail map for Sydney's commuter rail? It has two loops (the city circle and the Epping/Chatswood line) and I think it would be very interesting to show that, even if you had to distort it.

Actually, that would be done in a manner similar to the S-Tog network.

Maybe you could do one for the Beijing Subway since it has two circle lines (Line 2 & 10). Line 10 is currently a partial loop but it will become a complete circle one another station is built. Or you could make one for the Madrid Metro which also has two circle lines (Line 6 & 12). If you want a challenging one, maybe you could try making one for the Seoul Metropolitan Subway.

Hexagonol, looks like a drug or something.

"Hey, it seems you're in transit map drawing withdrawal, let's give you some hexagonol, three subway systems to draw, and you should be fine. :P

Also, 400th post.

Enjoy. It's a map, seven years into the Cities in Motion simulation - quite accurate in fact. Trams go underground in the city center and were built from older infrastructure, bus lines are pretty fine for a city meant to represent 400'000 people. No heavy rail, though.

The city itself is not "mine" since it was a collaborative project, but I was responsible for a few areas as well as overall detail and naming, hence why you can see some of my usual naming conventions showing up. As for the network itself, well, I worked as a typical British network onwards - lines flowing from the suburbs downtown, and altered to feed the tramways. Three of these tramway lines were directly upgraded from bus lines - the whole of line D took lines 2 and 4 over, shortening them; the southern half of line C took over a defunct line that was constantly overflowing and critically overloaded. Other lines were built as part of the original network, though the northern half of line C and both halves of line B used to stop short of the A ring line before the downtown tunnel was built (I didn't use money cheats to kickstart the game, and in fact I still haven't, so it grew pretty much organically and naturally.)

Great addition to the thread. I didn't realize that trams could go underground in CiM.
