Tower Life Building, San Antonio, Texas, USA

(By Silent Butler on Flickr)

The giant transmitting antenna finally came down and a lofty flagpole restored in its place.  This vista showing the building in splendid isolation along with other picturesque views from down river may become things of the past, as intentions were announced earlier this year for the residential JMJ Towers River Walk to rise almost catty-corner to the Tower Life Building.  If the JMJ plans succeed, they could spur further development in this downtown quadrant, finally fulfilling the dream of the uncompleted Bowen Island Skyscrapers project, the 1929 development scheme modeled after Rockefeller Center that originally built the Tower Life Building as the Smith-Young Tower just before the Great Depression.

Zhengzhou Greenland Plaza (郑州绿地中心·千玺广场), Zhengzhou, Henan, PRC

I'm sure SOM was probably trying to evoke the image of a tall paper lantern, but many people instead seem to be calling it "The Corncob."

TA-DA...A-Z!!!  Hip Hip Hooray!   It only took us all three years!

@Takingyouthere:  I too am dismayed they took down the antenna.  Although the flagpole is in keeping with the original design, the syringe-like antenna actually better complemented the building's proportions and added to the urban Gotham look.  The transmitter was long ago superseded by antennas on nearby taller towers with further range, and as the owners probably no longer wanted to maintain it, they used the tower clean-up and restoration as an opportunity to replace it.

However, if it were up to me, the fanciful Graf Zeppelin mooring would be more than just a newspaper hoax.  Hehe, "Hugo Eckener offered free rides to all air-minded persons"...I would have raced up the tower's stairwells to be first in line!  We're a fair weather city, so instead of modern Zeppelin NTs merely stopping over at our historic Art Deco Stinson airfield on their cross-continental delivery flights to California, I would fly them out of Stinson over the Alamo City.
