2611: Yeah 0.08 sounds crazy. We have 0.05 for full license and below detection (zero) for learners and P Plates.

As Duke said, kangaroos suck. And we have feral deer too. And wombats that will rip the underside of your car. Literally the only thing Australia doesn't have that's out to get you are volcanoes :P

    Also does anyone use Urbanspoon?

We do have volcanoes, but the active ones aren't on the mainland. The last mainland eruption was over 4000 years ago, with most of them going extinct millions of years ago. Heard and MacDonald Islands are still active.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

The maximum BAC for drivers under 21 in the US is 0.02. They allow for some minor detection from things like mouthwash, or alcohol consumed for religious reasons. This isn't a rule designed to limit the privileges of young drivers, though - it's in place because it isn't legal to be drinking in the US if you're under 21, whether you're driving or not.

I thought people always naturally had a low BAC, at least that is what I have heard in the past.

Ah yes, in America you can drive before you drink. In most countries it's the other way, I think :P Here you are allowed to buy alcohol when you are 16 (not liquor, that's 18 years), driving is 18 years.

Your BAC normally should be basically zero, it goes up as you consume alcohol.

The age at which you can drive in the US varies from 14 in a few of the most rural states to 17 in the more urban ones. Almost all have restrictions on drivers under 18, though.

I have no idea what MI's laws are like now, but you could start learning there when you're 15 when I was still a student.  Should still be similar.

It's said that Mt. Fuji is going to erupt in the near future.  Near future is measured in years, though.  Should be quite the event, combined with the Tokai earthquake they're expecting, and the Tokyo Bay earthquake that is now something like 20-30 years overdue.  I can see Mt. Fuji from certain areas in my town (well, almost everyone in Kanto can say that) and Izu is the border between the Tokai and Kanto/Tokyo Bay areas.  Totally exciting, you guys.

Another good thing about Belgium: a lack of vulcanoes and earthquakes. The most serious (registered) earthquake in Belgium (and whole Europe) had a magnitude of (approximately) 6,3 and happened in 1692.

And what, you can drive when you're 14 in some places?! How does that work when you enter another state?

Edit: right, you people use automatic transmission in the States, that does make a difference (I HATE manual transmission).

2619: In Australia, that is also the case having a driving age of 17 and a drinking age of 18, except in my state where both are 18. What do you think about that?

And what, you can drive when you're 14 in some places?! How does that work when you enter another state?

Your license is still valid. If you get one at 14, you can drive in a state that you need to be 17 in while still 14. It depends entirely on what state you live in, not what state you're currently in. Of course, the vast majority of the time, especially for young drivers, you're going to be close to home - so such situations in practice are rare.

The other thing you have to understand is that we're talking about the most rural states here: a level of ruralness that does not exist in Europe except for in northern Scandinavia. Kids in Wyoming (for example) have a high likelihood of growing up driving the tractor on the farm and stuff like that, so they get some experience driving things from a young age. And the roads they drive on once they get their license have very little traffic. It's not at all like driving in a more developed area.

Yeah, I know. My mother lived in Iowa for a year. 96% of the surface of Iowa is farms! Hard to imagine when you live in Europe.

(Also, she told me people call soft drinks 'pop' in Iowa, funny word :P )

2622: Words are funny. Americans call hot potato snacks "fries", and the bagged snack "chips". In the UK it's chips and crisps.

Australians are too lazy and call them both chips.

2623 What we call 'cookies', Brits call them biscuits, which is a whole different thing here in the US.

What do you call American 'biscuits' in the UK. What do you get with a 3 piece dinner at KFC.

Whether you call them fries or chips or whatever... they don't vary all that much from place to place, although they are easier to find in some parts of the world than others.

Pancakes, meanwhile, seem to exist pretty much everywhere, but different countries make and serve them in different ways.

This is something which has made me hesitant to travel abroad: if I go somewhere where they just don't serve food in a way that resembles the American food I know and love, what do I eat?

There's always a kind of food that you will find, I think. Hamburgers are everywhere (I had a tasty vegetarian 'gourmet burger' tonight, yum!), pizza too, pasta,... Well, in Northern Europe anyway. Southern Europe might be a different story. Of course, there's still fast food, and it's the same chains as in the USA. Most countries have McDonald's, Burger King and KFC. Belgium only has McDo, since we seem to be a difficult fastfood market (we have a strong 'frietkot'-culture, even the most stupid village has a fries stall).

(Also: hmmm, pancakes with maple syrup!)

I like to try new foods. I'm not all that picky. But, even across Europe you can find familiar eateries to fall back on if you're not up to being adventurous. I recall catching a whiff of something delicious while walking through Dublin only to find the aroma came from a Subway. I swear they blast that smell out into the street to coax you in.

I don't even know what half the stuff I eat here is called.  It seems like there's something new in every school lunch I eat.  At home, though, most of our food would be recognizable to anyone back home.  My wife, while Japanese, doesn't especially like Japanese food, so we don't eat a whole ton of it.

2628: I guess the exoticness of a cuisine is taken out if you are from that country.

Speaking of kangaroos being dangerous to your car, I nearly hit one tonight! What was it even doing up at 2am?!

Pizza may be available everywhere, but the quality of it vastly decreases the further away from New York City you go. Why is it that nowhere else seems to know how to make it properly?

That is one thing that irks me about New Yorkers. Do you really think that the only people in the US who know how to make a proper pizza live in such a tiny area? I think it's all in your head! :P Don't believe me? Come take a tour of Pittsburgh's finest pizzerias with me and I'll prove you wrong. Honestly the only thing different I notice about New York pizza is the size of the average slice. But then again, it seems the only place to find a proper cheesesteak is in Philly. I can't tell you how many times I've ordered a "philly steak" from places around me only to find that is has *gasp* lettuce on it. Ridiculous!

I have had pizza at exactly ONE place outside of the NY area that stood up to NY pizza - a joint in San Diego called Bronx Pizza, owned and operated by a guy from The Bronx. So yes, I do actually think that as I have seen no evidence to the contrary. :P

But name what you think the best pizza place in Pittsburgh is and maybe I'll check it out next time I'm there.

I ate pizza in New York once, at the Two Shoes (I think it was called) at Grand Central Station. It was delicious. There was this pizza place out in some place near Conschohoken (or Conshy, as its sometimes called) called Angelo's that was really good. Apparently the mid Atlantic is some sort of epicenter of pizza goodness.

Chick-fil-a is a weird name for a fast food chain.

I mean think about it: "chick" = feminine and "fillet" = fancy. Neither of those are qualities associated with fast food!

I don't think fillet has anything to do with the word 'fancy'.  The definition of fillet is 'a fleshy boneless piece of meat from near the loins or ribs of an animal".

2639: All I know about Chick - Fil - A is from the anti-homosexuality controversy a while back. Before that I hadn't heard of it.

We don't even have Dunkin Donuts and a lot of Krispy Kreme's are closing up. Although Costco has moved out here recently.
