I had read that people eat pizza with fork & knife, and while at a pizza place i told my friend that. I'm pretty sure he eats pizza with a knife & fork to this day.

2583 I was visiting some relatives who live in Lansdale, apparently eating pizza with french fries is common there.

I have eaten pizza with a fork and knife before. It was, however, astonishingly devoid of mayonnaise.

2589: Had to drive through a bushfire today. Scariest thing ever with fires on the hard shoulder of the freeway. The road is now closed with the roadside completely engulfed, and critical warnings issued.

Do people in Japan think the US is crazy?

They actually rather like us and think we're cool.  They don't get a lot of the hillbilly crap here the way other places do.  We're still cowboys, hamburgers, and big, noisy cars to them.  Oh, and now the Avengers.  The Avengers is kind of a thing here, especially among my students.

I heard it reached 54 degrees in an area of Australia (that's 129 in Fahrenheit). That's insane!

2592: Yeah, probably in Oodnadatta or something. The temperature here is currently 36 degrees (97F) and it's 2:30 in the morning!

Dude, you could have blown being so close to the gas tank and all, lucky you didn't leak fuel from your tank.

My friend is trying to convince me to move in with him... on the other side of the country. I may take him up on it. This time next year I may be living in San Fransisco.

The official highest temperature so far this month was 49.3C on January 2 at Moomba Airport.

On January 3, Walgett reached 49.1. On January 3, 1914, it set its record of 49.2.

Meka Station topped 50 on January 12 (the exact temperature is not known since the thermometer isn't marked higher than 50), and a car thermometer said it was 54 outside at Burren Junction on January 3.

I got a Galilean thermometer for Christmas, best I can say is that the maximum's always been above 28 since then. According to it, the current temperature is around 27.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Weeeeell, Belgium's not too bad after all. It rains a lot, the dominant colour of the sky is grey, but at least it's not 50 degrees and there are no bushfires. (Also no scary spiders and other really scary animals.) On the other hand, we also don't have kangaroos. Which is a pity. I hope you have AC at home?

You don't want to have kangaroos. They're the Australian version of deer: all over the place and frequently getting hit by cars, with unpleasant results for both the animal and the vehicle.

Japan doesn't get anywhere near 50C, but it does get hot.  The worst part about it (besides the mold ON EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE) is the humidity.  I have never experienced such humidity as I have here.  The occasional disappointing typhoon and earthquakes every once in a while round out the disaster list here.  Apparently the plate near Chiba/Boso Peninsula is moving and they're expecting a big-ish one.  I'll be fine where I am, though.

The hottest it ever gets in Philly is 90F, some summers even 100F.    And everyone goes to the Jersey Shore, and many go to Atlantic City for gambling, but south of that you have Ocean City, Sea Isle, Avalon, and Cape May. All nice little towns.

Anywhere near the ocean is by virtue of that never going to experience the hottest of the hot or the coldest of the cold. Water requires a lot more energy to heat up or cool down, so when you have a lot of it nearby it prevents the temperature from swinging as much by acting as a giant heat sink, cooling hot air down and warming cold air up.

It does, however, also cause the air to be more humid, which makes the heat worse. I'll take 110 degrees and 5% relative humidity (wet bulb temperature of 65) over 90 degrees and 80% relative humidity (wet bulb temperature of 85) any day.

2604: Despite that, Melbourne is a seaside city. I guess we get the inland heat.

Larks, the P plate stands for Probationary, as this is the first year I have had my licence. A few restrictions apply, such as only being able to carry one passenger aged between 16 and 22, and having a 0.00 BAC.

Ah, so Victoria's on the bandwagon of coddling newly licensed drivers too, eh?

My drivers license offered me full privileges the day I got it. None of this "probationary" crap. The way god intended it!

2707: Yep, and the passenger restrictions apply for one year, and then general restrictions apply. At least we don't have speed restrictions, where NSW drivers are limited to 90kph.

In other news, Adelaide is expected to break it's top temperature with a high of 46 degrees (that's 115F). Melbourne has sat through 4 days of above 40 degree weather (105F). Can't wait for it to end.

I got my Michigan license with the last group of students under the old, non-restritcted laws with the lame plastic-laminated license that you could easily fake into an over-21 license if you were so incline I NEVER WAS I WAS A GOOD BOY.  The new group had licenses with time restriction, and a group a couple of years after that had the licenses rotated 90 degrees so you would KNOW that that person was under 21 beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Belgian driving licenses are simple: if you pass your exam, you get one, no other limitations. However, they are currently discussing stricter rules about drunk driving. Some want a stricter rule only for inexperienced drivers, others want it for everybody. Rules have been made more strict for people who drive buses,... Belgium is currently at 0,05 % and is among the less strict countries in Europe. Most countries in Eastern Europe have a lower limit, several, including Hungary and the Czech Republic have zero tolerance.
