I've heard the name Macklemore but I couldn't name any of his songs (nor did I have any idea that name belonged to a rapper, I would have assumed it was some other type of band). Current music is not something I pay much attention to.

He actually ruined one of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, 'Otherside'. Shows how current music lacks originality. >.<

I like a lot of current music, but I absolutely despise rap. It's just a guy (or girl) yelling into a microphone, and they add a beat and autotune it. :P

Duke, that Pretty much sums rap music. All I could hear are rhyming words and auto tune (However, Macklemore's rapping do give people a message). On the other end of the spectrum, anyone here listens to classical music (I sometimes do)? :P

I do! I used to listen to it almost exclusively, although my tastes have broadened since then.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I listen to the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack a LOT when I'm writing.  Does that count?  I enjoy classical music but I don't listen to it much.  Also, I think that there is plenty of originality in modern music.  Just because there's a lot of shallow pop getting constant exposure (music we're inclined to like as shown by science) doesn't mean it's all that way.  I think that some rappers are quite interesting as well.  I've tried not to be as much of a music snob these days as I was when I was a student.

I don't hate classical music but I do find it to be generally flat and lacking in energy.

To some degree I also can't get over this idea that classical music is for rich snooty people to listen to while drinking tea with their pinky extended, and I tell ya, that ain't me. :P

It's kind of the same deal with rap being associated with generally minority people in bad neighborhoods.

OK, apparently there is a limit to how many videos you can put in a post. They're well worth a listen though.

One of your videos is blocked in my country on copyright grounds. Thanks, WMG!

As for the ones I was able to watch, I will grant you the tunes are upbeat, but it still sounds like it belongs in an opera house... something you really can't avoid when you've got an orchestra playing. Although I do imagine the same tune would sound better if played by a more modern band of guitar/drums/keyboard rather than an orchestra.

EDIT: ah, there we go. The version you posted is meh, but this is awesome:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeLQPBbZp3Q

Note how it's the same tune, but with like a thousand times more energy in it.

If that is your idea of rap then you have been incredibly misinformed, There is no auto-tuning and no screaming involved.

Larks, who would you recommend in rap as highly skilled and good to listen to?  Please don't say Lil Wayne.

I would never recommend him, Among my favorites are Spice 1, San Quinn, JMT, AOTP, Vinnie Paz, Snowgoons, MC  Eiht, MC Ren, C-BO, King Tee, N.O.H, Celph, Marco Polo, R.A The Rugged man, Les Vegas, Lee Majors, Gramm Kracker,  Thurz, Telly Mac, RBX, R.B.L, V-White, AP.9, Dru Down, RZA, GZA. Inspecah Deck, Onyx, Q-Unique, Eligh, Killa Tay, Kon Artist, Kokane, N.O.R.E, Cappadonna, Fed-X, DJ Quik, Whillie D, D.O.C, W.C, Mack 10, T-Lo, Choppa T, AZ, Eightball, MJG and Krumbsnactcha Just to name a few off the top of my head.

My playlists and albums total close to 2,000 different artists so its kinda hard to list all 2k here.

2534: I've always said that if you dislike an entire spectrum of music you aren't listening to it properly/the right artists.

Not the biggest fan of rap, but there are a fair few artists I enjoy. Larks, I'd recommend you give an artist called Flume a listen.

Sometimes opinion is influenced by things the music is associated with more than the music itself. For example, I can't take country music seriously because as far as I'm concerned it's redneck music and thus I can't not make fun of it. :P

You know, if you play country music backwards they're uplifting songs about a man finding his dog, getting back together with his girlfriend, and fixing his drinking problem. :P

And this piece isn't supposed to be serious:

Thanks, Larks.  I actually knew a couple of those names, and there were none of the usual top 40 types there which is a rather pleasant surprise.  I'm going to give some of them a listen, I like to expand my horizons.  Except for country music.  I'll accept that it's popular for a reason, and that it can't all be all terrible, but it's so not what I like that I just won't listen to it.  I'd almost rather listen to disco.  Almost.

Interesting enough I've grown to like Aussie hip hop alot too, acts like Bliss N Eso, Horrorshow, Hyjak N tourture, Downsyde, and artists like Pegz, Maundz, Brad Strut, Pez, Urthboy and Illy are pretty skilled.

French rap is good (I think). I guess because Belgium is still somewhat influenced by French culture, it's not something strange for us. Not that I know much about it, but 'La tribu de Dana' by Manau comes to mind, a huge hit in France (1,5 million copies sold), Belgium (number 1 in Wallonia, 4 in Flanders) and the Netherlands (number 2 in the charts). It's one of those few songs I remember from my childhood :)

Rap from other countries can get interesting. Have you ever heard people rapping in French? It's hilarious.

Madjao mad a remake of Dounce France and the music video is so strange.

I think Eminem got his name by looking at his name (Marshall Mathers) and a package of M&Ms. He called himself M&M before Eminem. (source: Wikipedia) :P

    Also, dat pun.

Stromae (which means 'Maestro' in 'verlan') is very good indeed, but he's Belgian :P Without a doubt he's the Belgian artist with the most international succes of the latest decade. Also it's not really rap, it's more electro. Though there are rap/hip-hop influences.

This song is about his missing father (Papaoutai = Papa, où t'es?).
