Pay at the Pump, we all pay at the pump in NJ :P

For those that might not know we don't pump our own gas, there's a law to create jobs that requires an employee to do it. Works quite nicely, and you don't have to leave your car so this doesn't happen:

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

I have nothing worth stealing anywhere, be it in my home or in my car.  I'm a pretty worthless human being.

5166.

Somehow I find that hard to believe, very few people are worthless in life.

Something telling about this style of thievery - it involves grabbing a woman's purse while her wallet is not in it (because she's using it to pay for gas). So the thief is likely not getting much or any cash out of the act. But they have a good shot at getting their hands on a cellphone, or tablet, or e-reader, or some electronic device of particular value.

This supports something I've been saying for a while - your wallet is no longer the primary thing you need to be concerned about. A lot of people pay for everything with plastic and don't carry much or any cash, so the returns on stealing a wallet are often not great. But it has become quite normal for everyone to walk around carrying electronic devices that are worth several hundred dollars. THOSE are what the thieves go for.

Along the same lines, I know someone who was robbed at knifepoint a couple years ago. The thief did not ask for his wallet. The thief demanded one thing: his cellphone.

Some demand wallet and phone as happened to a cousin and some simply walk up and say "good day" then reach down and rip the chain off an old lady like happened recently around here. (a bunch of others as well this is just a small sample)

One "strategy" that we've picked up on and look out for is a car with 3 guys in it, they stop and let one out at the corner of one block and drive down the block past the victim a bit and the second gets out and walks back up the street towards the target. Both converge on the target and after the robbery they run into the car and drive off.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Someone tried to rob the corner store at knifepoint last year, they got hit over the head with a bottle of wine and ran off.

He then tried to rob two other places in the same way, but failed and fled both times - the second time when a car stopped outside, and the last time when the staff refused to give him anything.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

To this day I don't keep any cash in my wallet. I got into the habit of just keeping cash next to my wallet inside my pocket when I waited tables. A wad of $84.00 in singles doesn't exactly fit inside a wallet. So if anyone demanded my wallet, they might be disappointed. I haven't ever been mugged in the traditional sense but someone tried to make off with my bag while their partner in crime distracted me. They were unsuccessful. I see everything. Although in that case, I actually heard him going for my bag as opposed to seeing him do it.

Someone robbed my apartment about two years ago but all they took was a stash of cash I had in a drawer. I mean I had a 64gb iPod sitting right there on the coffee table but they didn't bother with it. All they took was the cash. Likely someone I know. I've always suspected my old roommate (from a different apartment) because he is, unfortunately, a junkie now. Either he or the guy down the hall who moved out that week and left our landlord high and dry on a few months rent.

Muck, that reminds me of a story.  When we were looking for a place to rent up here, a realtor took us to a house near the happenin' part of town because the owner of this place said that it should be ready for renting out by the middle of July (we were up there in late July).  Well, it wasn't.  Whoever had been living there left a ton of crap there: beds, dressers, dishes.  There was a bowl still full of dog food with the dog food bag sitting open right next to it, and a pan half full of rice waiting for the water to be poured in it to be cooked.  It really had the feeling of being abandoned in the middle of the night or something, like the dude burst in and was like, "Grab what you can, we gotta go!  NOW!" and then that's what they did, having a dragged-out argument set to increasingly tense background music the whole time.  It was weird to see.  Needless to say, that's not where we're living right now.

I've had my car fall victim to thievery. Twice... :meh: The first time they took all four rims and left it sitting on blocks. The second time they smashed the drivers' side window and removed the airbag from within the steering wheel.
Needless to say, I don't live in that neighborhood anymore.

Then there was also the time a couple dudes attempted to carjack me. Attempted unsuccessfully, mind you. I didn't fall for their ploy.

I'd like to catch someone doing that to me, They would be hopping to the ER to take the 45 out of their foot, Back in the good old days people cut off hands so everyone knew they were thiefs, now they get off easy.

Sounds like a druggie, They probably have no idea what an iPod is or it is too old of a model to have much value to be worth it.

I'm sure the tracks on it are worth it though :thumb:

Yeah now that you mention it, that iPod is pretty old but chock full of musical goodness indeed. Despite the fact I've reached the halfway point of my 30's, I'm still listening to a lot of new music. However, lately I can't stop listening to People Under the Stairs which dates back to the 90s. A new Blackalicious album is coming out very soon though. I'm excited for that.

Anyone ever listen to Death From Above 1979? I saw them open for Deftones last month in Columbus and they were pretty rockin.

Third Eye Blind came out with a new album a couple months ago and it's actually really good. My girlfriend and I saw them live a couple days before it was released and it was a super chill show.

In the past 24 hours, 5 players on my fantasy baseball team have been injured.

The last concert I went to was the organist from Notre Dame playing the Wanamaker Organ.  Our music taste is varied.

I saw Social Distortion a couple weeks ago. Before that I spent a day at Warped Tour. It was hot and I got sick but it was fun.

Yes, this is kitty.

I did see both Incubus and the Deftones at the Rolling Rock Town Fair something like 15 years ago.  The last show I went to was probably Incubus in Hershey, PA when Gruvis Malt (this awesome, now-defunct jazz-rock group from MA, kind of like a less acid-y version of Soul Coughing) opened for them.  I think that the lead singer from Gruvis Malt is still active in music scenes somewhere.

No one would have ever heard of Hershey if a famous candy company hadn't been founded there. It's their one claim to fame, let them be proud of it and and draw tourism revenue from it.

I've been to Hershey a few times, had fun.  I might be wrong and I'll have to check but I think Hershey founded the town for the workers. It's grown since.

The Hershey Bears are a Minor league hockey team from there. The jersey color matches the chocolate bar wrapper.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

Hershey's is good as the occasional chocolate fix. But if you have the chance, I would recommend Ghirardelli's. They started out in San Francisco and are a huge favorite in the Bay Area!

Alright, I stand corrected. Both the town and the company were founded by a man with the last name Hershey.

As for Ghirardelli... eh. I'm not a fan of fancy chocolate. It's more expensive, doesn't taste as good, and has also been known to provoke mild allergic reactions in me. I suspect I am allergic to chocolate but can eat Hershey's without a problem because there is no real chocolate in it. :P

@airman15: Ghiradelli does have some pretty good chocolate chips for baking... though I don't use them all the time. There are a couple of local places around here that make some good chocolate, too.
