This video will show you how to terraform using roads. Dig or raise the land, build overpasses, underpasses, tunnels even on flat maps. Also how to use bridges over land.

Yes, I was going to post today that it is indeed all about the shift key: if you keep a finger on the $%&^! key this all becomes a lot easier. Good video sir.

I'm finding it very hard. Nowhere near as easy as in the video. I'm struggling to find the sweet spot between the red and blue circles when planting a small section of road. The cursur is just very jumpy. Anyone else having the same problem?

If you have problems making it work, bulldoze a part and try again. You can also let go and start the current selection again. The tricks is that not every selection is the one which wich you can do this. There isn't a preset position, you just have to keep trying until you hit the sweet spot.

Its a funny one. I was having big problems with the cursur being too jumpy, then when I tried it in a different region the cursur was fine!

I've made a few overpasses but I'm finding it difficult to make tunnels. Practice makes perfect, though! :)

I thought I'd add the little trick left out of the video that reduces the overpass footprint wrt perablenta's up ramps (also I'm finding up more tricky than down). Remember to keep the shiftkey pressed even for the first little flat section.

    1. Dig your road in

    2. Add little road stumps making the biggest side lumps you can

    Spark_2013-05-01_10-31-14_zps1bff6532.pn

    3. Add the overpass beginnings making sure to get maximum elevation without attaching to the stumps

    Spark_2013-05-01_10-32-15_zpsc550a23f.pn

    4. Delete the stumps

    5. Connect

It still takes me too long to do this, but it's nice to have the ability in vanilla.

I think dirt road overpasses look the coolest. I haven't played with rivers so it's the first time I've seen this cute wooden bridge  :)

This is starting to get interesting now. Look what happens if you zone next to roads built up or down   Yes indeed, real-ish terraforming.

I can now do overpasses without any problems. However, I'm really struggling to create tunnels. I can never seem to go deep enough. I always seem to get to a certain level and no matter how many times I try bulldozing and all that, I just cant go any deeper. o.O

Sorry bud I can't help as I didn't even try; I use a mod for tunnels.

Which mod did you use? Is it an easier technique then this one?

SUCCESS! Only took about 20 minutes o make this avenue bridge in regular mode, now to just build a great city around it.

I shall call it Bumpy Bridge

    Same here.

It seems as though someone knew of this 'ability' at Maxis and the latest update that I had today limits how far down you can actually go - either through the actual code or they've raised the water table underneath all the maps as every time I try to dig down in Clearwater either the road starts to go too steep or you start to see water appearing and the warning popping up about start/end points needing to be on land.

This is pretty great. I'm going back into a few older cities and incorporating it into them.

Wow, that's pretty cool.  I can then put the wall textures along the side of the raised/lowered ground.

    oh... wait...
