Brown paper packages tied up with string?  They just indicate some missing prop or model.  Unsightly.

Boy, we need a .DAT file that contains all dependencies. It was already done a year ago, except that, you already know what happened there!

The problem with that is one of copyright and ownership.  Files are placed separately for use by members and may not be copied without permission of the author.

...and also given the fact that all the plugins on all the sites can in theory be a dependency of another plugin what would you limit the DAT to, and who would provide support when one of the files in it had a problem cos it certainly wouldn't be the author's problem and what happens if they update the original because of a problem how do you update this DAT file and how do you make sure everyone is using an up-to-date version and just how many different versions of this DAT would exist ... it would be logistically nightmare

and finally as "A Nonny Moose" has just pointed out you would need permission from all the author's to do this ...

Have added another 100 links since yesterday, if anyone wants to join in adding links its fairly easy to do, these instructions were done, when we were just adding the links by location, but since then as someone said they would find it easier to find things if for example all the Commercial stuff was in the same list, we are shifting all the stuff in the LEX and STEX lists out into the other lists

Anyway on to links, when you click on the add Link, you first need to add a title this is what people will see in the catalogue ... for example

Title field: NDEX Texture Set Volume 1
Alias field - you can leave blank this will be auto-filled by the program
Category field - Pick a suitable category ie I picked the STEX for this one

Just copy the link into the URL field you don't need to add anything else the program will do the rest

URL field:

Leave the rest of the fields on their default settings, you can add a description if you want to, otherwise its fine to leave this blank as well.

anybody who does add links will get points for doing so, you can't edit the list once you have added something to it or delete it, but Admin staff can if necessary.

Hello, I have a big problem with brown boxes, they appear instead of some trees of my flora.. One of these is called deciduous tree and the other one is called simply tree. Can anyone please help me? I  read the readme files and downloaded all the dependencies... the problem begun when I downloaded some flora from SC4Devotion (for the Arden Seasonal Tree Controller)

thanks

The AERDEN (is that correct!?) tree controller has a lot of dependencies, are you sure you got them all? Best course of action is to double check since that's literally the only thing that could be afoul here.

The other possibility is an override later in the loading.  Make sure all your terrain stuff loads last.  Put it in a folder with a name like:

z___zZzLoadLast (three underbars).

I have a mysterious brown box called "nyn". It appears as a 1x1 medium-density R$$ growable. Does anyone know what it is?

It is part of a large mod of Scandinavian lots.  I have it.  It would appear to be a missing model on that lot.  I just bulldoze it when I get it and it is usually replaced by another lot.  I've tried communicating with the author to no avail.  The rest is so good, I just put up with it.  All of the work is in one of the Scandinavian languages, and that stops me or I'd try to fix it.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have several large sets of Scandinavian lots (26 Stockholm-style buildings, about a dozen Swedish row houses, and some Finnish corner stores) so I'll have to just demolish around it.

Theirs two simple steps to avoid brown boxes. Make sure the dependencies of a certain building etc. is all installed, and another thing is make sure you don't accidentally delete the "model" file from a building etc. you downloaded otherwise you will get a hideous brown box. ;)

A lot changed since I posted this, the catalog still exists, but it and the site have moved to another web address, in theory if people wanted to add plugins links to the catalog we could set it up on the new site, but most people only want to look something up, anyway the new location to the catalog is here

I have read all the various posts contained within this particular forum on brown boxes and how to get rid of them. However, the problem that I am having is that in place of my roads and avenues I actually have brown boxes. I have double-checked all the various dependencies using Cleanitol and everything is checking out okay, except for those dependencies that have been locked by the creator for either being outdated or causing a particular problem. None of my buildings or anything else shows up as brown boxes in the game, except for my roads and avenues. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing its something near the road that is causing the problem ... streetlight, tree or something, but first of all you will have to see just what is missing and that means getting rid of those brown boxes

Try this

It won't solve the problem, but once its a tiny coloured smudge it might be possible to hover over it while on query or even select it and see if it tells you what it is .... maybe?

Don't be surprised if you have a tree or sidewalk mod that has a conflict in this case.  I would look very carefully at such items as a first pass, and if I didn't find it, then resort to the binary search shown in the pinned threads above.

Catty-cb and A Nonny Moose,

Thank you for your assistance in getting rid of the brown box issue that I was having. It turned out to be some kind of conflict with an enhanced street mod that I had placed in the plugin folder. However, when I removed it, instead of, the actual title for the RCI box and the box to the left of it, which shows your amount of money, the titles are just hashtags (#). By chance has anyone come across this particular error before? And if so how do you fix it without completely reinstalling the game?

I also started getting a pop up window warning me that there are plugins packs that aren't available on my computer and that some graphics may not appear or function correctly with the codes being given: 875026515 and 963334724. I have tried doing a search for these two particulars codes, but haven't come up with anything as of yet. Does anyone have any ideas what these two codes are referring to?

Very strange.  Something has messed up your GUI.  There is an alternate GUI you could try at

I'm guessing that's the cause of your two problems, if you remove something from your plugins and they still exist in your city you will get the second error, I wouldn't worry to much about it as at some point you will find the "brown boxes" and delete them or if its on a road just replace that section of road, as for your first if its a custom content LOT that you are querying and its got missing language strings then you have deleted the plugin that contains this information.

Nice GUI thanks for posting the link to it A Nonny Moose

Those are completely unrelated to your problem unfortunately. These numbers are randomly generated by your game, and can (mostly) not be used to hunt down missing files.

The only time they are useful is when dealing with original Maxis made lots... but those have numbers with no more than 3 digits (I think)

When it comes to custom content found on ST or other sites, the only option you have is to read the Read-Me's

Rather than error codes, I believe those numbers represent the time and date the plugins were created. However, using them isn't that reliable to track down the cause, especially with DAT files that can hold multiple plugins.

After making a region backup, try searching around in your city for any brown boxes or empty lots. Pegasus' might make this task easier, as it could be something quite small or obstructed from view. If you can identify the lots, a Google search of the title may help find what you're missing -- the packaged files + any listed dependencies.

As a workaround, you could try adding the -IgnoreMissingModelDataBugs:on parameter to your target shortcut.

This will hide evidence of a missing model (brown box / flag). I've not tested this, but it may also prevent the "missing plugin packs" message when loading a city.

Back again know why those names seemed familiar last night, the first one on your list is a In-Game Building in other words it came with SC4 Deluxe so shouldn't need any dependencies it will turn up when the conditions are right for it.

Same thing for the second name on your list, suggest you check out this list of In-Game Buildings

And then let me know what you still are missing and I'll take another look for you.

Yeah. Those are definitely the in-game buildings. And I have no idea why they have the brown boxes.

Two possible reasons they are brown boxes and to be honest this is just a guess on my part

1. There is something wrong with your game and you may have to restall

2. You have installed something that is using the same names, etc as the in-game buildings, but you don't have the dependencies

Have just had a brief rummage around on the STEX to see what plugins are available that effect your in-game buildings, the most obvious one is this one

Not sure that's any help to you, hopefully someone else has had this problem and knows what caused it.
