Too many Garbage/Recycle to collect

I have a city with average population of 100k (for weird reason population changes all the time) that just can't handle garbage/recycle collecting on its own. I tried to move some of the waste disposals and recycling center to different city in the same region, but none of the garbage/recyclable trucks came.

Although the number changes all the time, averages are usually 20k garbage/40k recyclables to collect daily. I mean, there is simply no way to sustain a proper size of city; 1/4 of the city is literally filled with recycling centers.

Anyone with ideas? I am actually betting on the possibility of glitch. :(

I think it's crazy how much garbage and recycling there is in the cities too, there is usually twice as much recyclables as there is garbage, but from what I understand as long as the levels don't get in the red your fine and that the trucks visit different buildings each day to collect the more full places, one building isn't full of garbage and recyclables in a day

and apparently the lower the education level the less people recycle, from another topic in this forums on education, someone said that people start recycling at lvl 3 and recycle even more at lvl 4 and 5

I'm not sure if that is 100% correct so anyone correct me if I'm wrong

Personally I'd rather have my sims throwing out garbages instead of recycling. I know it sounds so un-ecofreindly, but it's getting harder and harder to keep up with recycling centers: taking up places, no storage for recyclables during daytime, and etc. I suppose EA wanted to make recycling as one of the way to earn money in the city, but with half of the service vehicles not properly working + regional service vehicle not coming at all force the city to specialize in garbage collecting. :(

    edit: typo haha

A minor update (perhaps major in some degrees) on the topic: all of the cities in my region on EU EAST 1 server are having problem with garbage collection. I believe garbage/recyclables trucks have stopped working. None of the cities have proper coverage of waste disposal. Could this be a glitch of some kind?

Does anyone have any more information on this?

I have a city at 300k population.  They are all complaining about "too much garbage", which I can see is actually lots of recyclable materials not being picked up.  I have a maxed out recycling center, but it fills up very quickly with recyclables, and the processing can't keep up.  I assume that the trucks don't drop off material until there is room.  Is there any option besides building another center?  I would hate to do that, since they take up so much space.

Well, to let you know what I did, I plopped another recycling center, maxed it out, and within a day or so, collection was all caught up and I was out of recyclables.  Then I destroyed one of them and rezoned the site.

    that sounds expensive

what I found out is that if a neighboring city sends recycling trucks to your city, some people start converting garbage to recyclables and once people start recycling they don't stop even if the neighboring trucks stop coming which forces you to build your own recycling centers to deal with the recyclables not being collected, because if it's not collected you start getting a lot of ground pollution everywhere, same thing if you built a recycling center in your city and suddenly get rid of it (or it's destroyed)

if you don't have a recycling center in your city or no trucks are collecting the it then people should stop producing recyclables or it should be collected by your garbage trucks

You can half your costs by having one city with 32 trucks send 16 each to the other two cities. The trucks, like municipal busses are copy pasted to the region. This means that, you will have 32 trucks in your first city, and another 32 in those two other cities. On the plus side the trucks that pick up trash cans in other cities don't actually bring back the recyclables back to the city of their origin.

The dump trucks on the other hand, I think they do bring back the garbage from the other cities.

I actually tried this: one city with 4 recycling centers and 3 waste disposal. But then none of the service trucks would arrive in full number, only about quarter of them actually arrived. I suppose it is a glitch of some kind.

It's possible that is a bug, because you can send as many as you want, it's not like power or water those get divided by the number of cities in the region.

Sorry to dig up an slightly aged thread, but I'm having a problem where a few specific building's recycling isn't being collected, while buildings around them are. I see the recycling trucks (most still fairly empty) driving around these buildings, but they never drive "into" them to collect the recycling. Even buildings further away have their recycling collected, but not these specific buildings. This is why recycling is never 100% collected in my city, which is a shame as I can use the alloy.

I had 2 recycling centers full of trucks to deal with only about 5000 recyclables, and only about 4000 would be picked up (am now back at 1 recycling center, which still picks up about 4000).

Should I just demolish these buildings and hope the new ones are more recycling friendly?

Having the same sort of issue. I have a city with mostly educated residents, so there's a lot of recycling; about 10,000 bins daily (it was actually quite a bit higher but I may or may not have crushed their spirits once or twice trying to expand my electronics operation). Even with five recycling centers with a total of 80 trucks (I figured more would yield me more recyclables hence more plastic and alloy), I barely manage to collect 85%. Does having more centers increase the amount of bins picked up, or does it more or less just spread out the distribution? Or does it have more to do with my traffic, meaning they can't get to all the bins before their shift ends?

EDIT: I got rid of three centers so I just had the two running. I got exactly the same collection rate, so building more centers doesn't result in more collection.

I don't think it's traffic, because farther way buildings do get collected, and the mostly empty trucks just drive around in circles for ages doing nothing before they return to the center. Perhaps there Is a hard limit as to how much recycling can be collected? Like a set percentage of total recyclables?

I have a similar problem. In a city of highly educated Sims, the graphs for recyclables show all are collected by my two recycling centers. However, the "bins collected" is at about 25% of the total (currently around 44k bins). How is this possible?

Okay, I know it's been a while. Let's see: I opened this thread in April, and I'm still having issues with garbage collections.

I ended up making a dedicated garbage-collecting city in my region. I started playing on Mac, so it doubles up the possibilities of glitches. But I am quite positive such glitches don't occur in the main systemical level. I mean, what kind of unique glitches could there be for Mac, except for graphics that needs tons of tweaking? At any rate, building a dedicated city didn't work. It still doesn't collect all the garbages, and my 3d-layer and numbers still show uncollected garbages piling up buildings by buildings. Interesting thing is, none of the sims are complaining about garbages.

Start your recycling as early as possible, I don't have figures but, if you wait until the population is over 200K, the recycling plant probably won't handle it.

Once your city grows the recycling plant will start to lag. You can plop another recycling plant with nothing but collection trucks (costs 1,000) and they will possibly catch up on collection.

You'll also have 32 recycling trucks to send to other cities.

It used to work that way, anyway.

I'm having this same exact problem, like 12.000 bins will be collected out of 58.000. My recycling trucks follow directly behind each other throughout the city. I think to solve this problem Maxis should make it so that we can place 'recycling dumps' where Sims drive their recyclables to the dump and the recycling trucks pick it up. Also increase the amount of recyclables the trucks can hold to 5 tons.

    Thanks for the advice.

But none of the cities in this particular region has population beyond 120k. There is one, of course, that goes up to 160k, but the dedicated garbage-collecting city has 9 fully-upgraded recycling plants. I actually had 3 fully-upgraded recycling plants within the city (160k), but it didn't work, unfortunately.

Here's the funny thing. I tried to keep track of these trucks, and found out they (more than 1 truck) simply stop by at the building, and it can't empty the whole building with hordes of garbage trucks.

And, I completely agree that Maxis should seriously consider on increasing the number of upgradable garages for recycling/waste centers. I don't know about actual numbers, but apparently one center can't handle the entire city.

I'm not even sure the numbers add up correctly. I have a city that sits comfortably around 200k population or so. If I watch the Waste Disposal Map all of my trash and recycling gets picked up. The trucks will often return to the center before the shift is over because there's nothing left on the map for them to collect.

Nothing is getting missed, yet according to the numbers they're only picking up 10k bins out of 30k.

Same issue here. City of 120k with apparently 190k bins of recycling. I watch it run on the waste disposal map and everything is picked up by noon. And the recycling centers shutdown saying there are no recyclables to process as well. No traffic jams preventing movement of trucks either. I'm also not getting any "the garbage is starting to smell" warnings. All my buildings except a couple levels on my mega towers have bright green happy faces. So I think this is a bona fide glitch.
