We all knew it and yet, we complain

It's just funny how the world works.

The biggest thing you can read here is: Server-Issues...

We all KNEW it would happen. We all KNEW EA wouldn't do anything about it. And yet: We are surprised, frustrated and complaining.

I just wanna make a point, even this is in fact nothing more then a spam topic.

We all knew, from all other games we have ever played. The first day, week, maybe even month will go bad. Lags, issues, problems and the list goes on.

We all knew the second we bought the game, to not expect anything good. But yet, WE bought te game. While tons of video's are online which can let you wait 3 months.

I mean, I just wanna say: Why the hell complain about it in 1000's of topic, while there should be just 1 general topic about the server issues. And why not just stop about it.

EA isn't reading this forum, they do not care about us, or anyone, they only care about money. Like all big companies do. They know that if they will care about us, they will gain even more money, but the power/money they got destroyed there brains. And though, it's not entirely all EA's fault. The game makers DO care. But the top is not caring and making decisions the game-makers must do or else they will get fired.

Just to let ya all know how I think.

I am frustrated to. Waiting 2 days before the freaking game comes out in my country is just WRONG. And then the problems you get with it. It's just. URG. I had the same crap when Battlefield 3 came out and it's still crappy. So yeah, I did expect this all to happen. Though will stil play and buy the game, just not the useless add-on pack.

That's all...Thanks for reading this crap. Goodbye. Reading the forums xD

If they would've ditched the DRM so they could make the game playable and open to a much larger public... uuh they didn't, it's EA.

RIP Simcity.

I dont get anyry because I dont buy new games straight on release day never have for years, too many issues these days. This game had lots of concerning pointers so I waited. I know I am not the biggest fan of Simcity here (dont play any games much these days) so its difficult if you are a major fan not to buy immediately but really you should get out of that frame of mind. Wait, read the forums and reviews, then make a decision. I am sure thes issues will be sorted out eventually anyway but yes it is annoying when you have spent a lot of money on a game to not be able to play it as intended, especailly with this game where if you cannot get online you cant play it at all. But thats online DRM for you, now hopefully all the doubters about it will be having second thoughts about whether they really support constant connection games.

I have played to many mmo's since launch to think this was bad.  I played it a couple hours after launch.  Every time I have tried to play I have had minimal problems.  I won't say its problem free but the problems I have had will be fixed in no time I bet.  I already noticed the servers were better at syncing my different cities today then yesterday.

I am a big fan of Sim City series, but I can smell a bad game far away. Also, I tend to wait to buy games.

I was right on this one as well. After the server issues are gone, you will realise the game ain't very good.

I have not bought it yet even though I wish I could play this game because I flatly refuse to pay for a product as morally bankrupt and crippled by always online drm as this is. I can not imagine how it must feel to be a developer who has to navigate through all the inane wishes of upper management stifling your creative process and squeezing your baby into a straight-jacket that makes consumers cry out in anguish. But I have no doubt it must suck. So dear developers I wish I could enjoy your game but I can not due to the decisions made by EA upper management. Hopefully at some point either EA kneels to their consumers and accepts a more reasonable approach or if that never happens than all I can hope for is that an Independent group of people will make it possible for me to play the game as I want it to.

Always online drm is the norm nowadays. You're hoping for something that will never come. If an independent group of people was to make a simcity like game, they would already have done so.

The fact it is the norm doesn't make it less morally unacceptable. Always on DRM is a crime against the consumer. Period.

Errr no it isn't. Let me name the always online games for you currently.

Simcity

Diablo 3

Yup, I guess two whole games is really the norm. Most games require an internet connection to verify, but that is entirely different to always online. Secondly it will only become the norm if people accept that this is just the way things are going, which people sadly seem to be doing.

HUH? Outside a couple of games it is not the norm, most people realised it doesn't work and moved away from it ala ubisoft.

Kickstarter seems to be changing things. The development companies who have been funded by KS know that their audience has little patience for DRM and that it only serves to punish those who actually buy them, rather than the pirates who would pirate the games anyway. To say that DRM is just the way it is, get used to it, is a bit premature, IMO.

You're all forgetting Civilization 5. Another old and famous series which went always online with Steam. Well, true, 3 games doesn't make it the norm, but they are among the most famous and successful computer games (at least in sale numbers).

Speaking of Steam, I just recently found out that EA tried to buy Valve for 1 Billion dollars (Dr. Evil pic inserted here), and Valve DECLINED!!  They  would rather their company disintegrate than be bought out by a giant corporation who just wants to cash them in and wait out the two to three years for the employee contracts to expire. <-- paraphrase of actual quote. I am SO impressed by that, I cannot tell you.

Just, wow.

Steam is having problems ? Yup it's good news they refuse to be bought by EA, they seem worse than Valve, but Valve is not great either.

A game on Steam is not always online. You can launch steam in Offline mode. In fact, you can even play multiplayer over a LAN with a single Steam account (and while this requires access to a network, it does not require access to the Internet).

The only games on Steam that REQUIRE an Internet connection would be the MMOs and such where the only way to play it is on a server with other people.

But, the fact of the matter is, Always-Online requirement has been around for 15 or so years now (maybe even longer). MMOs have had the always-online requirement since their inception.

Ultima Online, Everquest, World of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Guild Wars. You name it. Name any MMO, and you just named a game with an always-online requirement.

I'm also quite positive that when it comes to DRM issues, Ubisoft by far has the worst reputation, and an always-online requirement, even if it's PURELY for the sake of anti-piracy, is far better than the anti-piracy Ubisoft measures (if you change any piece of hardware on your computer, the game thinks it's a different computer, and won't let you play any more--which also means I can't install my copy of my game on multiple machines for my personal use, no matter how legitimate that is, at least always-online lets me play on any machine I want and modify my machine in any way that I want).

AND, at the end of the day, whether some of the online aspects of the game are Maxis afterthoughts of EA telling them they must be online-only, or if they're actually legitimately the primary reason they game went online-only (and DRM being only an afterthought), the fact of the matter is, there are some legitimate non-piracy issues for being always online.

When it comes to Diablo 3, the always online requirement protects the auction house, and most especially, the real-money auction house. You can hack the server and host a private pirate server if you want, but you're not interfering with the legitimate players on the legitimate server. One of the things that really turned me off of Diablo 2 years and years ago is that you could never find a game with legitimate players. EVERYONE had their characters decked out in items that were cheated or hacked in. Now, they were items legitimately in the game, but with extraordinarily rare drop rates... yet EVERYONE had the item. It minimizes any work/effort/luck on my part to get a good piece of equipment... so for that reason alone, I was happy to see Diablo 3 online-only. I got the game at release. I went through their massive release issues. I wasn't too happy at the time, but it was quickly sorted out, and then I went on to enjoy the game.

So when it comes to SimCity, multiplayer region play and the global market are both reasons enough for the online requirement for me. Sure, they could have simulated fluctuating prices... but I've played other games with simulated markets, and either the fluctuation is so insignificant that you ignore it, or it's so predictable that you exploit it. And regardless of which it is, you certainly don't have the ability to plop a trade depot and import a product when the price is low, sit on it, then export the exact same product (without doing anything at all to it) later when the price jumps up.

This is gameplay that couldn't properly exist if you had the option of going offline and not participating in the global market.

As huff-n-puff as that statement is, the fact of the matter is, Valve knows it is worth more than that. They're releasing their own console soon...

So they can give some really morally great reasons for refusing the buy out, but at the end of the day, the real reason they refused the buyout is because they feel like they're worth more than that.

Steam is growing fast, so even financially it was a smart decision.

They are worth a lot more than 1 billion.

Well, analysts estimate Valve's worth to be 2.5 Billion so you're probably right but still 1 Billion is nothing to sneeze at and I'm just thrilled that there's at least one development company out there that EA cannot destroy.

Also, any game from ubisoft nowdays is alway online DRM: From Dust, Settlers 7, World in Conflict. Other games I have, Battlefield 3.

And every single one of them is a game I play when multiplayer server are down. Gues what happens if the internet goes out... which it does, frequently at certein times. Not to mention the server issue on there side. I remmembr a time where my internet broke down maybe 3 times a year, now its 5 times a month.

Eitherway, I'll never accept DRM and I will always complain about it, its forced on me.
