Sooo many skyscrapers all around this thread... 46.gif Not that I dislike them, but I'm simply not used to them. Highest building in my country is 27 floors (or so) 5.gif So it's time for a different skyline. I don't think it's the most beautiful, but hey, it's good enough and well... it's home

Prague:

I could watch this for hours...

and now imagine this covered with snow

I won't bother you with another ones, so finally just example of a really bad skyline - it's from Prague, too 2.gif:

My favorite US skyline is Chicago (by far). But my favorite non-skysrapery skyline would definately be Prague as well.

It's simple and elegant. Plus I really like red roofs.

My favorite skyline is Detroits. I think in New York and Chicago, there is so much that none of it becomes special, except for the really tall buildings (sears, wtc, etc.). In Detroit, the skyline is spacey enough that you can see all of the buildings. My avatar is the very top of the Penobscot building. http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=281543 for a nice picture of the Penobscot. (I edited out the antena on my avatar)

I think that Hong Kong looks really nice, but if I actually had to live there, it would be way too much for me. L.A. from Bladerunner is really cool too, but I'd never want to have that place exist in reality.

as a side note, when I think of those new modern skyscrapers, I think of the modern corperations that built them, and I think the big companies of the past where slightly better. Also, imo, the buildings of today are made to be cheap, efficient, and to make a proffit. More money was spent on the older buildings, and the money was spent on something beyond the building itself.

Plus I like art-deco 44.gif

With far distance Hong Kong is the number 1.
My favorite non-skysraper skyline is Venice.

yea, the Fisher Building really is fantastic. I saw a play there once, and the interior is also amazing. I also spent some time in one of the offices, and that particular floor hadn't been remodeled, although I'm sure that other floors are very modern. I wish that new center (the 2nd downtown) had been built downtown instead, along with the abandoned train station. New center never shows up in the skyline shots, yet the Fisher is 30 stories tall.

Hong Kong really is amazing, it's hard to believe that such a place exists today.

Living only about one hour away, Frankfurt/Germany is obviously my favorite.

Well, nobody knows that Mexico City has a skyline. In fact, we have the best skyline in Latin America (maybe Santiago de Chile is nicer 5.gif ). And in fact, we have 3 skylines!!! 46.gif Torre Mayor is the highest building, it's only 223 meters high, but here in Mexico City it takes a lot of work to build skyscrapers because the city used to be a lake and the ground is unstable, also it's a seismic zone. Every building of this city is reinforced to be able to survive if another earthquake occurs (the last one ocurred in 1985 and it was 8.5 in the Richter scale, I wasn't born yet but it was horrible). Also there are two volcanoes in the East, one is active but in a clear day they look really beautiful. So, the pictures:

Here you can see the tallest building in Mexico (at least for now, the Torrena will be finished in 2007)

Torre Mayor Again...
torremayor5mw.jpg

Here you can see the skyline of Interlomas, deep into the mountains.
torremayorysantafe5px.jpg

Here is our WTC, I read somewhere that it is now the biggest WTC in the world... I don't know, but it's cute. Also the Popocatepetl and Iztacihuatl volcanoes can be seen far away.
wtcmexico4ot.jpg

And now photos I took 5.gif

The classic side of Mexico City: Metropolitan Cathedral and Latinamerican Tower (highest building in the city from 1950 to 1980 I think).

dsc011442xn.jpg

The new financial district is called Santa Fe. It's in the west end of the city, high in the mountains and surrounded by forests. I like it a lot.

And that was all. From the outside world I really like Toronto, Frankfurt, K

Canuck, that last picture of the Fisher Building is really fantastic!!!

JasonCW, I think the difference between skyscrapers now and then is that in the old days, a building was an important *the* symbol of the strength of a company; they held a lot of symbolism. Take the Empire State or Chrysler Buildings in Manhattan, or any number of the old skyscrapers in Detroit. A lot of thought, effort, dreams and design were put into these buildings. Nowadays, you're right, it seems a skyscraper is just a place to house employees; not an important symbol of the company. In that sense alone, I think old buildings surpass their newer counterparts.

That's also why it drives me nuts to see Detroit demolish these great old buildings -- like Hudson's -- or turn them into parking structures! *grumble*

Those pics of Vancouver are awesome! I'm living in Calgary and I'll be here for at least another year and before I leave taking the trip over the Rockies to Vancouver is a definite priority (I really want to drive Vancouver Island as well). As I was looking at those pictures of Frankfurt I was struck by one of the buildings: it's the Hurt Plaza! Maxis's designers lifted that one right out of Frankfurt's skyline. Good choice in any case.

Actually, there are quite a few buildings in the Euro set that are direct reproductions from real buildings in Frankfurt. As you said, Hurt Enterprise Headquarters is the Commerzbank Tower, Hogan Wallace and White Insurance is the Messeturm (the one with the triangle roof in the background) and the Khoury Art Foundation Building is the headquarters of the DZ Bank AG (also known as Crown Building, it's the one just left of the Messeturm on the first picture). Lucky Lizard Lofts is the building of the European Central Bank, also known as Eurotheum, and maybe there are a few smaller buildings taken from Frankfurt as well.

I just love the skyline and in fact the whole feel of Baltimore. It does'nt get as much credit as it should since it is sandwiched between DC and Philadelphia but it is really a great looking city. If you go over one of the bridges leading into downtown you can see all the perfect rows of rowhouses and its just an amazing thing to see. And there is one really really nice building that I just love its this older looking building with a golden top I just think its beautiful. I can't upload pictures right now but its definitely my favorite so far. By the way that picture of Chicago with all the buildings sticking out of the clouds was just amazing!!!

Hong Kong has the world's best skyline...without a doubt.

Locally, my favorite skyline is San Diego's. Not so much for the buildings (although those are coming along nicely) but for the setting, which is absolutely amazing.

That pic with the Building peeking through the clouds is awesome. and I was happy to see some of TO's skyline pics shown I've actually Landed at Island Airport that way and let me say it is freeky cause all you see is water and the all of a sudden boom the runway.

NOFUNK-Come on now we all know that Toledo was originally part of Michigan the only reason Ohio got it is that they wined about us killing a pig in a 2 week war(SO you all see there is an actuall reason that Michigan and Ohio hate each other)

and now some more of TO from my vacation last December(note I took these with my phone I they aren't the best quality)
