    I'm hoping that I can release a stable version where you can edit textures around wednesday next week. I'm currently re-writing a lot of the code that has to do with writing the model files, and I think I'm starting to understand their structure a little better.

    @oppie - I didnt see anything on the codeplex about making a VP6 video player so i am going to make one. Let me know if there is one in the works on the side so i wont do unnecessary work.

    Hi Oppie,

     

    Have you ever seen this error? That makes me unable to edit properties. Neither installing .net framework 4.0 nor 4.5 works.

    @frankc123 - If you give me a codeplex login, I can give you developer access to the solution so you can check in your changes directly.

    @heterodox - It's a known error and sadly all I've been able to find out is that it's supposedly a bug in the .NET framework. I have no idea why some people are getting this error while others aren't.

    I used VS 2010 to build the solution with the source code you provided and it now works on my computer. I have no idea what's going on, but it does solve my problem.

    @heterodox - Very interesting, I'll try looking into it again - if you're able to run it if you build it yourself, that definitely points to a missing reference after all.

    Anyway, I've finally found out what I was doing wrong for the vehicle models, and I've been able to replace the textures for the double decker bus:

    I'll upload a stable version of SimCityPak that allows texture replacements very soon (around the weekend)!

    When i try to import a modified version of the road texture it tells me it has stopped working.

     

    How can i solve this problem?

     

    EDIT: It had to be DXT5, so i solved it by saving it as DXT5.


    Hmmm.... what should i put here?  I don't know...

    @Bryan623 - The import doesn't work yet in 0.1.0.5. You'll have to wait for the next official release (or you might have some luck if you build the latest version from the code on codeplex yourself). I'll still have to fix a few bugs, but I'm hoping to release 0.1.0.6 around the weekend.

    At the time of that writing, i built it but was trying to import it as DXT1, which was giving me that error.  I tried DXT5 and it worked.


    Hmmm.... what should i put here?  I don't know...

    This might have been already posted but since i am dyslectic i don't want to read to many posts so i'll post it anyways.

                    

     

     

    after using the 0.1.0.5 a while i start getting crashes when i try to start it luckily i figured out why so i can fix it on my own.

     

    What happens is that fore some reason some garbage text is added to the end of "InstanceRegistry.xml" after "</InstanceRegistry>" often it will end up looking like this "</InstanceRegistry>>" the crash i attribute to the extra ">"

                    

     

    also if i could request a feature it would be to be able to have the  ability to have the "context view" in a lone window that way i could take full use of my two screens.

     

    currently i simply make the window span both screen then drag the center line between files and context to the side of one screen

     

                    

     

    i noticed two wrongly named property id's they are 

    0x0e4066fa = it says its for the straight network cursor but  looking at the image its for a curved one

    0x0e40670d= it says its for the Curved network cursor but  looking at the image its for a straight one

     


    Weird things seems to get easier the more i do it... is that a bug?

    i somehow fixed some number of crashes i have been having as well as speeding simpack up some this is how i did it

     

    i used "cff explorer" and checked the "app can handle >2gb adress space" in the SimCityPak.exe -> "Nt Headers" -> "File Header" in Characteristics

     

     

    scratch above seems to only make it faster


    Weird things seems to get easier the more i do it... is that a bug?

    That shouldn't be necessary, unless SimCityPak is doing unnecessary 32-bit PInvokes, it should already be running in 64-bit mode where available. Adjusting that flag wouldn't affect speed.

    oh... well its just a feeling.
     
     
    anyways is it normal i seem to get a large number of crashes when doing some thing one that i can replicate very easy is by opening the "SimCity_App.package" and the try to sort it by "InstanceId" i always get a crash.

    Just wanted to report that the OBJ exporter isn't working completely right, I noticed quite a few polys missing when I opened an exported model in MAX.

    i figured out why some files keep crashing whenever one try to sort them by "instance id" it's because there are entries without instance id's in them. 

     

    try to look for files whit instance id 0x00000000


    Weird things seems to get easier the more i do it... is that a bug?

    @jdenm8 - I had some problems myself as well - some programs would not import the .obj at all, and others would import it perfectly. I'll look into it.

     

    @Felgard - Thanks for the detailed bug report and research! I fixed this problem in the development version so it will also be fixed in the next release.

    Found another easily reproducible crash.

     

    when trying to save changes to a package if the file is "read-only" it crashes

    Here’s an update on what I’m currently working on - first of all, I’m still testing and tweaking the 3d import so that it uses all the available possibilities. While it works quite well the way it is, there are still many things I’m ignoring (such as interior maps, some aspects of the bump mapping and some unknown variables). If I can’t get this to work in the next few days, I’ll release a version as-is.

    To go into a few of the technical details - I’m importing .obj files (a pretty much universal format that most 3d applications can export), which contain most of the relevant data for the 3d models, such as vertices, triangles, texture coordinates etc. But the game uses more advanced options than that, such as interior maps, bump maps, etc. Right now I’m trying to fix the bump/normal maps, which (besides the normals, which are exported) requires a tangent and binormal to decide how to render the final lighting. As an example for why this is needed, you can look at some of my new 3d models, which have areas that seem to have inverted bump maps on one side. This is due to the tangent and binormal not being available. Luckily, these can be calculated from the normals and texture coordinates, which is what I’m attempting to do. I think I’ve at least figured out where and how these values are stored (as ‘packed’ unsigned integers), but the calculation seems to be off, so I’ll have to do some more trial and error to see what I’m doing wrong.

    Secondly, the feature I want to include is the interior mapping, which can be seen on the windows of most vehicles and buildings (these are also mentioned in a recent dev blog). In most of my imported models, these are not present, making the models look a lot more ‘flat’ than they could be. Since they disappeared when I imported my new models, I’m assuming that the relevant data for the interior maps (I’m assuming that it’s some variation on UV texture coordinates) is also stored in the vertex data.

    Note that all of this is still mainly focused on vehicle models - buildings are even more complicated, since they don’t use the same DDS textures and UV coordinates as the vehicles do. Furthermore, they contain palette information for at least two layers of texturing (as seen in the recent dev blog by ryan), so it’ll be a while until that can be edited.

    I am really interested in modding alot of the vehicles but I can't figure out how SimCitypak works. The documentation link takes you nowhere. Can you link or give me a quick 1.2.3 step ?

     

    It works much the same way as Ilive's Reader, SimPE, and S3PE. Pick the subfile on the left, subfile-specific plugin editor/viewer appears in the right panel.
