Up till now i've always had trouble getting industry to grow; that is 'till i tried some thing new:

Instead of growing from a small village i set out a grid of avenues and zoned for high density residential and commercial, and the industry went in as an after thought,I set the building timer to one year change and hit 'build all styles at once' . Ok lets go: i hit start and lo and behold a miracle happened: industry started to develop; on its own!!!

Dumfounded isn't the word.

now i regulary get 30k plus sims, loads of office blocks and lots of industry; fantastic! and this happens even on small tiles, a medium tile yielded 160k sims and lots of industry, i'm playing fairvile again and its only one quarter full, lots of space to go, maybe i'm finally doing something right at last!.

Technically, because of stage limits, high density zoning is not required at such an early stage of a city's development. Specifically until your RCI population is:

  • Residential: 25,952
  • Commercial: 15,356
  • Industrial: 2,447

However, it's always best sticking to what works for you. That's what makes this game unique. It's good to experiment, as there are so many different ways to build and develop a city. Simply going by the textbook isn't always recommend.

Very cool. Looks like a good approach to build a more rapidly modern city. I will try that in another city test. The cllast city i built back in 2006 (lost it whem my computer died) was the county type started out in 2005 as farming and few population. Before losing the computer it was a monster metrop with some of the original bldgs and locations reserved as historical.

I am currently redoing another one like it, but will fire up the game and start a neighbor city like yours so to create business deals between cities.

I started one of my coastal cities in the usual way by creating a village and as soon as it was in the black, added a rather extensive port. The result is that the city is growing like a stand of bamboo.

That always feels good! I started another region because the one was growing like molasses in winter. Normally I start with a big tile to grow into and then add others. This time I did a small one with a lot of farming and a little commercial and no industry. when they started screaming about needing industry, I started a city on a big tile with no agriculture but plenty of industry. It has been going great!!!! I like to just get on sometimes and watch it changing and growing with little messing by me! LOL!

One of the things I am doing right now is creating a region-wide rail system. It has just got going, and not all tiles are active, but this kind of vicarious model railroading can be kind of fun.

That sounds fun! Right now I have rail between the two tiles on this new region so maybe I will go region wide too! Could be fun!

Region-wide railway systems are always so fun to do! Even though no Sims use my train stations 0u0

Are you sure? The traffic flow display can be set to show rail traffic, and you should check. If you query a station and it shows no activity there is something wrong with the pathing or layout of your city because rail is one of the default speedways.

Rail is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the game, Love downloading a large station and getting 50-100k sims traveling for work, and of course a large parking garage system etc...

Generally speaking, you don't need parking garages with Passenger Rail stations because they have built-in parking. However, if it floats your boat ...

I noticed that some users of the monorail station I built next to the rail station use the parking lot of the rail station and then walk over to use the monorail. Pretty neat, actually.
