Residential Buildings and Long Commutes

Good Day -

When I place residential buildings in my cities, whether it be default sim city or downloaded structures, the commutes are always long which causes eventual abandonement.

However if I let the buildings grow themselves, there is no problem. Since I have a wide variety of downloaded residential buildings it would be nice to use them with out any problems.

Any suggestion and /or assitance would be greatly appreciated. THX.

It appears that you were trying to say that you actually plop the residential buildings and having problem with them, but when you grew them, there was no problem. Is that what were you trying to say?

Well, if so, that's what will happen to Residential buildings when you're not let them grow by themselves. You cannot do that to residential buildings. Let them grow and you wont have a serious problem.

As Cefien said, plopping Residential buildings are impossible. Sometime, it may works for short time, but it will not works for long time. This is one of the game's bug, and so far, there is no permanent fix to this. I suggest you to just let the residential buildings to grow.

Yes, although there are problems with residential buildings in particular, in fact, plopping any type of RCI can lead to problems. The game was simply not designed to handle this type of simulation. Also if a plopped building has a capacity too large for the city, not enough Sims will occupy it. In turn, this will contribute to its abandonment.

By default, all standard Maxis RCI buildings are not ploppable, and will only grow when demand is sufficient.

Residential plops don't work because the pathfinder can't find them. RCI plops in general cause problems with the demand calculations because they take up demand slots that were unplanned, and suppress the normal simulator demand paradigm until the simulation can catch up, which may not be in time to prevent untoward results.

Just a suggestion (sincing plopping residential doesn't seem to work), once a residential building grows in a spot that you like, mark it historical so it will not be replaced. Also, if you don't like a certain residential building don't be afraid to bulldoze it to see what grows in it's place.

I've never tried it because I don't use ploppables, but what if you were to bulldoze an existing grown building and replace it with a ploppable with a similar occupancy, would that trick the simulator demand paradigm ?

If I'm not wrong, that is the way to make it works temporarily. Btw, there is no permanent way to fix this problem. Growing RCI is still better than plopping them.

No, the way to do it is just to plop a residential building on top of a healthy, growable residential building of the same size, or on top of multiple, healthy growable residential buildings that add up to the same size as the ploppable. This is known to work.

I know that there is a way to plop a building and make it "construction mode" once you plop, instead of being 100% fully constructed on the spot. It also solves a similar problem with industrial plops. Some of bixel and xannepan's buildings do this and I don't have any abandonment issues (so far).

Does it actually solve the problem with ploppable residentials.

Good question. Why not publish your study when it is finished?

This desire to plop RCI grows from impatience. The game is designed for RCI to grow and be replaced as demand rises. I've always believed that SC4 is a leisure time activity. If you don't have the time to enjoy it, why do you play?

Not necessarily impatience, but a desire to have a certain building in a certain location perhaps, which you can't guarantee will grow where you'd like it to.

Like I say, I'm not into ploppables myself, but I can see why some people are.

Each to their own.

Exactly. For example, in my Chicago reconstruction, I use the Marina City residential ploppable, because it's quite unique, and a fixture in downtown Chicago. It's nice not to have it black all the time.
