Any manage to snag a beta key on FB? I tried at around 1:30pm PST but to no avail.

You tried about 4 hours too late, for codes that were gone within ten minutes. Wait until tomorrow and try again; it's at 9:30am PST.

EDIT 2.0: If you order SimCity on Amazon.com, they will send you a beta code through email. Once they send you the code, you can then cancel the order. I just did it.

If I'm going to buy the game, I'm going to get a physical copy. Trying out the Beta will help me make up my mind. :lost:

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying but I have preordered a physical copy of the game on amazon.co.uk which I didn't cancel, however they weren't giving any beta codes and I just wanted to try the beta..

I have been trying all day to find or win a beta code. Got close a few times, timing is everything. I don't like pre-ordering, but the Amazon deal is tempting. Think I'll just wait and see if I get emailed a code tomorrow morning.

Both are correct.

Its an hour per tile, but you can do it over and over while the beta runs.

Why they don't let people preload it is beyond me.

Yes, but i think only a small amount of people go in. So origin could handle it.

Hi.

Having problems playing the new Beta.

Get the msg

"Could not log on to Simcity due to a Network error"

Im using Eset SS5 and this gave me loads of problems when trying to log into Origin for the first time the other day.

Fixed that problem by adding Origin.exe & Originclientservice.exe to the applications exclusion list.

Might this problem be related?

Thanks for your help

Assuming I wasn't picked because I never got any emails.

*sigh*

And I signed up on the very first day it was announced...

Wow a fellow Paddy! Nice to meet you :)

I wasn't picked either fella. Managed to get one from the Nvidia facebook page a few days ago..

Hi ^^

I read on the official EA forums that someone got an email with their code saying that more keys will be sent to others over the weekend, and that keys have only been sent to a limited number of countries at the moment, such as Australia...

I got a key sent to me a couple of hours ago (I'm in New Zealand), but my internet's capped so I don't even know if I'm going to be able to download it in time to play it :(

Edit: 80% downloaded already - looks like I'm going to be able to play! :) The file seems to only be 250 or 300MB... (which I find quite small)

Edit 2: But of course, there are also 'updates' to download once you launch the game...

I got the email with a beta key but I think I accidentally deleted it and can't find it anywhere on my origin account. Anyone know where else I can find the key they sent me?

You're outta luck lad.

Also a New Zealander and got a key a couple of hours ago. Here is a summary I posted on another forum:

The download didn't end up being 12gb. It finished in ~45 min for me with a 18mbit connection. Just finished the tutorial.

Impressions so far:

- Graphics are a good combination of "not amazing so it bogs everything down" and "pretty good looking" so the game runs OK maxed in a small city on my 6850

- Complexity is definitely higher in comparison Simcity 4 - I really like the modular buildings, resource producing, much more indepth communication with neighbouring cities etc - there is just more options and things to do overall - more micromanaging - e.g. You want to know what the wind direction is before placing your dirty industry.

- I haven't had a crash or bug in 40 min so seems to be reasonably stable for a beta

- Music is back and awesome as ever

- Gubagubawaggawopa Sims speak is back

Concerns:

- Only 1 - Maps seem considerably smaller than in previous simcities - looks like big cities may be a thing of the past - unless there is no large maps in the beta or something.

Cool stuff:

- Seeing the power get turned on - love the switch flicking sounds as it travels

- The cop v robber shootout was cool and unexpected in the tutorial

Unfortunely I have to go for several hours so will play a proper game later tonight

Overall, I am reasonably impressed :]

i wish i could share my thoughts. i will honour the NDA.

but i will say is that i uninstalled SC4 a year ago to have a break after 7yrs. i thought i would take a long break and re-emerge in february fresh full artistic zest and drive. i will be re-installing SC4 next week, with it i will try for a new direction of Bats, Mods, and a new Map. I plan to make some beautiful cities/towns/village in my enormous region.

There's a tutorial at the start where it makes you solve problems in a town to get familiar with how everything works. I passed.

Next step: I need an hour of uninterrupted play time to start a city. Once I have that opportunity I think I'll give it a go.

I'm also pulling some strings to try and get into the VIP beta. (Unrestricted play time among other things)

My impressions from a playthru:

- the new city infra system with emphasis on roads only seems very interesting, but hard to get a good feeling of actual advanced city planning mechanics from just the 1 hour

- seems super easy to stay in the positive .. maybe too easy even. I just intuitively placed all my zones etc here and there and kept playing with full speed .. ended up amassing loads of money and increasing the city size super fast. Maybe it's because zoning is free. You can expand your city super quick with next to no additional cost, other than roads.

- I hope the game gets much more challenging when you start trying to get and keep rich folks in the city
