First in-game screenshots of Simcity (2013)

I wish Maxis used Speed Tree like City Life, Cities XL, and Anno 2070. The textures are a little bright and low resolution, the buildings could use a Normal Map but all in all the proportions are faithfully realistic, unlike SimCity 4. At least they aren't "fart brown" (like Sainty said) like Cities XL nor are they overly bright and out of proportion like SimCity Societies. I also hope that they enable semi-realistic reflections instead of showing clouds when your glass skyscraper should be reflecting other skyscrapers and the ground. I also hope that the buildings for Nuclear Power Plants are realistically sized, like Cities XL even though they don't need to have all that empty space around them. The nuclear power plants in SimCity 4 were super unrealistic but I have high hopes for SimCity 2013. I agree the grass looks good.

All in all, for a game in these early stages, this looks promising.

By the way, it is very annoying to post from my phone. I need to start writing something short, click edit, then attempt to write a long post with a small touch screen.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

imho, the "cartoony" look actually seems pretty nice.

It brings to mind the "uncanny valley" concept. Didn't expect it would apply to simulated buildings. Who knew?

The graphics look pretty good to me. Since it's all 3D and I'm used to SC4, it looks very different, but the gameplay is what I'm more concerned about.

I think that this looks like very good progress to me. They still have about a year left to go and they already have some decent graphics and simulations. I have high hopes for this game!

Gotta agree on the grass. Hopefully this means flora will be more than just decoration.

I like what I see so far. The art style is reminiscent of SC3000's stylized realism and I can see myself enjoying a SimCity that looks like that.

I love these screenshots! It looks very tilt shift just as promised. The textures could use a bit more detail, but the colours are great.

Also, bear in mind that even professionally made building models often look cartoony and sterile, so why expect perfection from a game which only costs less than $100?

I surprised that no one has noticed the screenshot with the building to the left of the firetruck. I may be wrong but that building seems very much like a commercial/residential style building. I know they said they were looking into mult-zoned building, I wonder if they've finally got it working?

Well, everything looks very nice, except for the 1st pick, too bright red, I hope they add good textures to it, right now it appears to only have base colors and props, but otherwise, me gusta

I might upset some of you with my opinion but I just gotta post it.

I absluteley hate ths cartoonish style. I already hated it when playing SC3000. Now the first screenshots to see show it again. That's just childish junk but not graphics. EA invests like mad into graphics of ther other games like NFS but this SC5 looks like straight from the 90's again (or just creepy and cheap)

    Bright color pallet != cartoon.

If you want cartoon, please refer to cell shading.

Wow the new images and trailer are amazing. And I just noticed something: Is the airport in the trailer a mock of SFO or is it just me?

I'm not a big fan of the new cartoon look, I still prefer a more realistic look. But graphics are something I can live with -there will also be some mods most likely- which will change the look of the game) as long as the gameplay is fine.

I'm still not fully convinced that the new Simcity will be a worthy sequel to SC4, but I am hoping it will be. What I currently know about the game excites me and is really getting my hopes up. However, we've been let down so many times in the past (Cities XL, Societies) that I'm rather reserved about the new game. Who knows? Time will tell.

Hopefully (crosses fingers) that the textures will improve VASTLY before release.

The textures make every building look like its made of plastic. I think that's whats bugging me about them.

I thought 'plastic' when I looked at the images.

Looks like a PlayMobile 'childrens toy mat'. Also I sure hope they make more props for the lots... (besides a few lego trees) the lotting is looking very bare.

Not to mention the gaps between the lots! I know Maxis is California-centric, but this is ridiculous. Most places in the world don't leave spaces for a Hummer to pass between each building.

You're right about props - everything looks bare.

looks similar to The Sims 3 graphics. I'm sure it will be further polished but at the moment I am liking it! Thumbs up and can't wait :D

I'm not worried too much about the bare lots, and other missing elements for that matter. Cause those will obviously be fixed before the game ships. Unless something terribly goes wrong, which I highly doubt would happen.

Same goes for the textures. Even if they end up looking like plastic though, modding will still be able to make it more realistic. I mean, they're just textures... :|

The important thing is that the simulation and tools will be there.

I'm not sure if it's just me but the new E3 footage makes the game look less cartoony. It surprisingly looks like a 3D version of SC4. I can't wait for this game now.

7 seconds to 13 seconds looks like the real in-game game play, but obviously still in beta.
