industry not employing sims

yeah so Ive been a SC4 user for years now, and I now have a problem that completely debilitates my region(s) which I have never seen before. Whenever I zone industry, demand is satisfied in the RCI meters, and it says jobs are filled. In spite of this, no sims commute to industrial areas, the only traffic going to or from the zones are freight trucks or trains. This means that there is chronic unemployment that cannot be fixed which leads to a complete stagnation of growth. Could this be CAM backfiring? I've downloaded it before and it has worked fine in those cities though.

any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

just to let you know, I have about 700 mb of downloaded material, all of which was recently downloaded. I've done the best I can to make sure no files are repeated in the system, and all my downloads have their required dependencies.

I don't think this is a problem, but there is some glitch with the CAM. Take a look around and you should be able to find the threads discussing it. There is a mod to correct industry demand which seems to go out of whack, but I don't have a reference to it.

If you are using the query operator (/) to look at the lots remember that the jobs ratio given is the number of people who can currently be employed/the maximum number of people who could be employed given perfect conditions. It says nothing about actual employees who can only be seen with the route query operator (ALT+/).

Industry runs quite happily without workers, but if you wait a while, they will come.

Generally speaking, Sims will eventually go to work in industry when you have enough of them and they are close enough. Most of my waterside cities start out with a big port layout backed by medium density industrial that builds very quickly and starts shipping stuff through the port. However, the employment status of many of them indicates they are totally automated.

When I have built the commerce layer (buffer) above the industry pod then some residential, the commercial jobs are generally filled first at low levels, then the ID jobs (until the schools have been around long enough). IM jobs and C$$ jobs fill next, and finally, after a considerable period, the $$$ jobs start filling up. At that point, I usually build an HT pod away from the dirty port, making sure it is well serviced like a residential area. This works pretty well.

I usually have a spot reserved for a CBD, but I don't make these terribly large because the concentration is on the port.

Here is an example, previously published. (A work in progress, but you get the idea, I hope).

Did you havocdoze an important rail connection? ;)

When you say region(s) do you mean the problem exists on all region maps that you load or in every city on a specific map?

@Moose:

What is the port mod you are using?

I kinda liked the way SC2000 built sea-/airports a bit better, especially the seaports.

The problem is not related to the CAM. It also exists in the vanilla game. It's simply related to your transportation system: There's industrial demand, there are suitable industrial zones, so industrial facilities grow - but your Sims don't get there to actually fill the jobs. There must be quick and short routes to get to the industrial facilities in question, and in most cases you will need a working road connection before Sims will start to "accept" EL-Rail or heavy rail.

@ poshbakerloo: The city you posted in the thread you linked to is a perfect example of how you should NOT lay out your city: There's the houses on one side of the river, the factories on the other side, but there's hardly a quick and short route for your SIms to reach their jobs. Most must drive up the river, cross the bridge, and drive down the river again on the other side. too long, too complicated - especially for the default pathfinder. You'd need tro add lots and lots of bridges, as well as bus stops next to apartment blocks and in the industrial area.

The NAM can alleviate the problem somewhat because it comes with better ("more forgiving") pathfinders that allow more realistic commute times, but that's addressing the symptoms. The root cause is bad traffic layout.

Which I dislike sometimes because until I noticed commuters from city A on their way to C clogged up my railway in city B.

neighbouring city, fine - all over the region, not so in every aspect.

That's another well-known problem. You will find more information on that topic if you search for the "eternal commuter" bug. There are ways to counteract this phenomenon, too. Once more the key is in how you design your region/cities.

I came across some threads about this. My thought was, that in restricting the commute range in the traffic simulator, the sims would stop looking at some point?

Hello all,

I have this same problem. It has gotten to the point where im getting no job zots over my residential areas. Whats even funnier is that there is a high demand for residential (6000 for R$ and 4000 for R$$). My demand for all types of industry is in the negative as well.My road connections are fine. I have the latest Nam version installed and the traffic simulator on high so I know it's not a distance problem.

Here is a list of the plugins I have installed:

Network Addon Mod (version 31.1)

z___NAM

hitech-doubler.dat

manufacturing-doubler.dat

dirty-doubler.dat

farm-doubler.dat

Plugin_180year_Abandonment_Modd.dat

radius_doubler.dat

Plugin_No_Dilapidation.dat

MallsDoubler.dat

LargeServicesDoubler.dat

ServicesDoubler.dat

I also have the R$$$ I-HT bug fix which i installed correctly

I want to upload images of my city to my post. I know theres a tutorial on how to do it but i cant find it anywhere. Can someone post the link? Thanks a bunch.

-Mike

Try running with just the NAM in your plugins folder.  I would lose all those "doublers" unless you have a specific reason for each one.  You seem to have shotgunned a lot of stuff that skews various elements of the game.

Yes, some of those listed mods could well cause adverse effects when used together.

Here it is
You can also upload files to other hosting sites, such as Imgur or Majhost. The same basic process applies.

Oh, and remember to save your screenshot as a JPG, as they take up a smaller file size than PNGs or BMPs. This can be done using MS Paint.

Yes, too many this and that "fix" mods will confuse the simulator.  Always be very careful with them and know exactly what you want to change.  Real fixes such as the Opera House that fixes a bug are one thing, but demand mods are tricky.

I'm using same COM/IND doublers as mnt5026 together with I-HT fix and I do not face such abandonment problems. Real culprit lies in yours no dilapidation mod which simply hides abandonment, confusing that way simulator. It'd be much better idea to use mod. It is also compatible with job doublers. Radius doubler also shouldn't make problems as it affects only civic buildings.

Any and all of this stuff really wrecks the game as far as I am concerned.  Effectively you are rewriting part of the simulator.  I don't see any fun in that, just a huge change in the game's parameters.  Not necessary if you really want to learn to play this game.
