This is great work my friend. The twisted building is a very cool idea. I'll be waiting for its release. Thanks for the tutorial too...

Here's some progress.  There's still a lot to do though.  Also, what I have already done will probably need to be adjusted a few more times before this is done.

But next, I'll do the middle column of window stuff.  You can see that I scribbled it in on the left side.  Even scribbling that in tells me that my vertical proportions are wrong, and that I'll need to fix them later.

Wow... I didn't realize the lower levels had that much going on in them.  Looks good!

A new page? Only 9 days!

    edit:

yeah, the lower floors actually have a lot of detail.  Off the top of your head, you'd think that it's not so detailed because of it's sleek stylings, but it is.

Hey Jason, sorry to bug you, the Water tower is great, but the night lighting doesn't work on the two closest settings.

The model is Ardecila's, not mine.  I just made the lot, so unfortunatly I can't help, unless the problem doesn't exist on his original lot (then I might have caused it somehow).  I didn't think to test nitelites.  When he comes back we can ask him about it.

I acctually seem to recall it not existing on the original, so if you could ask him that would be reat, keep up the great work!

    Today's progress:

    peno5ti0.jpg

    Problems:

In order for the ridges (f that's what they could be called) to show up, their width (depth too, but that's not the problem) must be exagerated.  But the windows right above the small arches aren't supposed to be that much smaller than the others at that level.  The reason for that, is that the ridges are so much wider than they should be that they close up the window space (if that makes any sense).  So I can either make the ridges smaller, to make the windows bigger, or I can just leave it.  I think I might do a little of both.

I guess that's the only problem so far.  It's starting to come together, and it isn't looking too bad.  I'm sure it will look a lot better once it's been textured.

    Next to do:

-Add the top row of windows.

    -Add the flagpoles

-Model the front window and modify the doors.

After that I'll do the lower floors on the other side of the building.  After that, I'll do the bulk of the building and it's tiers.  That will be the easiest part.  After that, I'll need to model the complex metal tower thing on the roof.

Wow this is looking some super detail. Try not to hurt your machine as it gets bigger! This is a great start.

This is GREAT Jason! I hope you can find a way when you model the metal antenae-thingy to get the red flashing light going, that would be just awesome! This is coming along so well; what a tribute to the motor city. I'm looking forward to this more than the Woodward Dream Cruise! (and that's a BIG complement! 18.gif)

The monitor I was on for your last couple posts doesn't do this justice at all!  I'm even more impressed now than I was before... and that's quite a bit, frankly!

Jason the detail is wonderful.. I have run into problems with too much detail sometimes with my BAT's, even when exagerating, unfortunately GMAX and SC4 (which is a few years old and not truly 3D) are not designed to show detail the way we would probably want to.. However the way your doing it (above) should look very nice once the textures are on. I'm looking forward to see how it turns out buddy..

Thanks. I've done some more work on it since the last update, but it was only getting the horizontal proportions right, so that the bottom part would line up with the columns of windows right. You see, above each of those three sections, there are two windows. The two windows are centered ontop of each of the three sections, but there is also an equal distance between each window. It took a while to get it right, but I finally got it. There isn't really any major difference worth posting though, since all I did is move the three sections over by varying amounts (.34, .408, and .537 actually).

I'm also working on getting the normal preview render right so that I can do previews in Sim City scale. Right now it's only in Sim City's isometric view.

Thanks everyone, here's an update.  It shows the fixed horizontal proportions, and the window thing.

I might do some more work on it tonight, but I don't really know.  What I do need to do though, is check if the way that the window "setbacks" is right.  It does something, but I don't know if it's angled at all.  All together the set backs aren't how I want them to look.  They're too blocky, they should be more graceful.

    http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=118560

    There's the actual building, btw.

Actually, yeah, the window areas are more like reverse bevels.  They do like this:

    _|\|---

with --- being the window, and the lines before it being the limestone.  I'll have to redo that part I suppose, but it's a lot easier now that the proportions are generally layed out.

I remodeled parts of it, and it's looking better imo.  The "sweep" tool in 3dsmax makes doing things like this much easier than simply extruding.  The sweep tool basicly lets you extrude something along a path.

Someday I think I'll do the Guardian Building, but no, right now I'm working on the Penobscot Building, right down the street. 1.gif

    edit:

    peno7gp2.jpg

Ok, here's a screenshot that's scaled close to zoom 5 (I didn't realize how small zoom 5 really is, lol).  I also made it render a little crisper, although this still isn't the final rendering scheme.  On the right you'll see the remodeled two parts, and on the left you'll see the old parts.  Also, the right size is crisper.
