OMG! That building almost gave me a stroke
It looks awesome! And I think that that floor that is hanging is part of the design. Good stuff JT!

thanks everybody!

and BananaRepublic is right, that IS part of the design. superstar and crazy, see the slanted wall with windows underneith? that was done on purpose, and i think it looks pretty cool!

pansarkatt, if you have the plug in manager, you can up the number of residents in that by a thousand maybe, that will requite a lot more higher demand for the building. if you need more help i'd be happy to explane the whole process.

I have a small suggestion.

Maybe the floors above the cutout, the ones that are 'hanging', should have some sort of support that connects them to the rest of the tower. Umm, that sounds wrong......this is hard to explain. Well, it kind of needs something to make it look like the floor about halfway up the tower, above the cutout, has something supporting it. 'ya know what i mean?

Something like that could easily be cantilevered from the central core of the building, meaning it wouldn't need a support.

Great job on the building, JT!

Hmmm... that just looks intuitively... wrong.
My civil engineering prof always says that if something looks like it won't stand up... it probably won't.... Wonders of modern construction aside, I don't really trust this model....

well if you guys don't really like the cut out i could always change it back to the box it was before? i thought the cut out part made it look more unique?

this is just a game, just because it doesn't look like it would stand, doesn't mean it doesn't look cool! this building will stand no matter what (since its for simcity use only 18.gif) and im going more for aesthetics than functionality.

i think i will put some more thick posts at the bottom of the cut out part (the place that's hanging)

Interesting design, I like the way you have used the cut out to give it extra interest, however instead of the square support have you thought about a more triangular/lower half diamond type of support, which could still be office space, and then have a corresponding half pyramid structure on the bottom level of the cut-out section to even things up.

JT: I love the design and everything; however, I must say even with your support, the building would not hold. The lower floors right above overhang would begin to crack under the weight above. Maybe try adding a column all the way down and having a couple vertical beams stick out... not one on every floor, but like 3 or so of them evenly spaced! Just a thought!

jtportland:It seems I need your help. I opened the Kinzie Tower in the plugin manager but I couldn't find where to change the number of residents. I also tried iLive Reader, but no luck there either. Could you please walk me through the process?

maybe if you put the corner column from the bottom of the hanging part to the lower floors, just a thought, still a kick ass building17.gif

Sk8zim17, this building is supost to look odd! haha actually it looks
rather normal on the two ther views where this corner isn't visible.

hogmeister, that is a very good suggestion, i did go ahead and try it,
but it just didn't look right with all the boxyness of the whole building,
i think the box support that i added complaments the boxyness pretty
nicely as it is now.

thanks superstar, cityman14 and subedei!

mcarch, i did try something like that too, but it looked kinda odd, but
maybe that was because i had lot of square supports all the way down, i will
see if it looks better with only a few down, maybe that'll look better.

pansarkatt, i am at school right now, so i can't help you w/o having
the plug in manager with me, but when i get home i'll post directions for ya

crazy, that's a good idea too! i'll go ahead and try that.

thanks for the suggestions everybody! but i did render this last night,
and if the nightlight's worked then i might or might not re render it with
the suggestions above, whichever turns out to be best. i havn't tested it
yet, since i've been at school since 6:30AM! but i'll be sure to report back
later this afternoon.

thanks banana!

ok, pansarkatt, if your at all like me, these pictures might help ya out!

also, this goes for any growable building that has been growing too often in your cities:

d91d6a9f.jpg

26350715.jpg

1. Click on the Medium Welth Res (R$$) on the left.

2. Double click the growable lot you want to edit (in this case it is the Kinzie Tower).

3. click on the Capacity Satisfied once, then you will see a box with ... on the right - click on that.

4. A map editor window pops up, then you click on the most bottom value to chagne the number of occupants or Sims that can live in that building. (this would be jobs for Comercial lots). in your case, you might want to change it to 5,000 or 5,500, this will decreae the likelyhood it will grow.

5. Click OK and you're done!

Thanks jtportland. Your instructions were great, really easy to follow. I'll keep them for future needs. Thanks again for you help!

EDIT: By the way, is it the same for commercial buildings? Increase capacity to decrease how many of them grows?
