Alrighty, here is the thread for the design and factfinding on the Skydome. I'll amalgamate my posts in the previous topic into this one.

Skydome will be kd5rax's newest BAT project after the Petronas are done.

I have a rather off-topic question ... is the roof of the skydome shown here automatic?
Like you press a button and the 'sunroof' closes?  21.gif

Id have to think it is automatic.  Otherwise, how many people would it take to drag that thing open??

BTW, Minuite Maid Park in Houston has a moving roof, too!

    SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

the Skydome is one of my many favorite stadiums (Wrigley, Fenway, Ebbits, Polo Grounds, Shibe, Camden Yards, Crosley Field...as much as i hate to admit it, Yankee Stadium, and many others). it was made in a time when cookie cutter stadiums were the in-thing, and is still hailed as one of the modern wonders of the world.
good luck on this...i don't know if it will be possible, but will you have the roof retractable?

The roog is automatic (just push a button!) and the BAT can't make animations, so it won't be able to open by itself.

-see? I can help with BAT too..

Yes the skydome roof closes with the push of a button, It is actually in 3 stages. The first stage is the round section facing east, it is the first stage to close as it swings around the upper bowl. The other 2 stages slide over after the first stage has closed. It takes approx 15 mins to close it. But, an interesting fact...if there is a 25% chance of rain, the first stage is closed automatically. Skydome uses doplar radar for roof closing decisions.

The last time I was there was summer of 1991, I used to have an awesom pic from the pitchers mound looking up at the CN Tower. What a view.

If this project were to work, it would have to be transit enabled. There are several lines of the CN Rail running underneath, and don't forget about the working hotel.

i think that it could be possible to have three different models, one with it fully opened and one fully closed, and a third in stage 2 of the closing.  that way it could be shown as closed, during most of the winter months, then open during the summer and spring, and occasionally have it in stage 2 closing.

Once the first model is made, it should not be hard at all to simply shut the roof off.

Acctually im guessing that like kd5rax pointed out we could animate this. But it wouldnt be a smooth animation by anymeans. It would have to be like he pointed out trigered by the tiem of year or maybe time of day.  Perhaps the easiest would be time of day if you did this only one render would need night lighting perhaps have it closed during the day then in the evening open up and have it all lit up like the current ingame stadium at night with the rood fully retracted. This would mean cutting render times by nearly half. Then im guessing someone in the mod squad with some experience in the effect dir could tell the game to load a model based on the time of day.

ok, a question, is this how it unfolds?
first stage, each section tucked under another
second stage, the top section slides to the middle and the other two slide to the end.
third, the small one rotates 90 degrees to rest in its preset spot.
    /idealbb/files/foldingroof.jpg
i think that the day closed and night open idea is absolutely brilliant joerg.  it would be a beautiful thing to see in the game.
at around 5 pm, it could half open (or closed then open a little later if it is too much of a pain to render).  then at 6 it could fully open.  at around 10 it could close back up halfway, then at 12 close fully till the next day.  And during the winter it could be closed as well.

Alright, here are some good architectural shots that I scanned from what I had about the skydome. I know u'll want to use these!!
By the way, the dimensions are metric, in meters
Note: I had to reduce the size of the pics, so if u need larger pics let me know & I'll compress & email them to u.

Skydome! Excellent! I live in Toronto, and I was considering modelling the dome at some point. But I'm sure kd5rax will do a much better job!

This is a very rough sketch of what it will look like.  Right nowthis is the overall shape, the only thing more than 70% completed is the dome.
I like to make a rough shape then gradually refine each part until the building is completed

judging from past rendering experiences, i will keep this as low-poly as possible.  The seats will add a lot to it though, as each one will have a minimum of 6-8 polys a piece.

Actually Kd5rax you could make each seat only 4 polys this is the method maxis used in the seol stadium and then i used it for the seats in mine after trying to figure out an efficient way to do them for along time i finnally just broke down and did it the maxis way and it looks quite good really.  Just make each seet a double sided plane.
