Who, besides me, saw the National Geographic special on the international denizens of the north. It was titled Circumpolar Bears, and discussed both the Polar Bear population and the Brown Bears. Brown bears are known locally as Kodiak, Grizzly, and other names, but they are all the same species. The Polar Bears are hardly distinguishable from Brown Bears except for a few minor genetic changes. These bears belong to all of us who have land north of 60o

A Nonny Moose happens to be my northern neighbor. By the way, I need to drop by and borrow a cup of sugar and half dozen eggs =)

It is a long haul from Columbus to here just for that. What does a zombie need with people food?

I'm a ghoul my pets are zombies and my pets need mirengue to keep them happy - tastes just like brains to them ;)

The bears docu sounds interesting, but I must of missed that one. Maybe can find it on HuluTV or NetFlix. My latest viewing has been about the Incans, StoneHenge and Egyptian Mummies, for the most part.

I don't regard Timor as a free nation, since its supposed to be a part of Indonesia.

No, it really isn't supposed to be Indonesia's 27th province. They declared independence from Portugal on the 28th of November, 1975, although they really weren't given a chance to become such until the start of the 21st century. The occupation was not recognised by the UN, and their status as independent is.

Also, if we're going by whatever Indonesia wants or doesn't want, there wouldn't be much left of Malaysia to border either. As far as I know they very much enjoy being Malaysian rather than Indonesians.

All sea borders here: Australia, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Samoa, American Samoa, and the Cook Islands.

If you go by the Realm of New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Niue are included and French Polynesia and Tonga become neighbours. The Ross Dependency also has a theoretical land border with the Australian Antarctic territory and every other claimant at the South Pole.

And the fact that they are, you know, white. :whatevs:

(or black, depending on whether you look at the fur or the skin)

Actually, polar bear fur is transparent. It looks white because of all the light being scattered through it. Anyway, they are the world's No. 1 predator, so if you seek the top of the food chain, don't go too close.

If you include the different countries within the UK, as well as independent countries, being from North Eastern England, in order of closeness, here are my neighbours:

    1- Scotland

    2- Wales

    3-Northern Ireland

    4- Republic of Ireland

5- France (Channel tunnel is a nominal border)

well...i guess it's time to put on my smarty pants.

*TECHNICALLY* australia does have land borders in the australian antarctic territory. These include; France, Norway and New Zealand. To a lesser degree; Argentina, Chile, The UK and Germany. And then there's Christmas island, Heard island, Norfolk island and the coral sea islands which when put into the equation make us close to Fiji, the Soloman islands and Vanuatu (aswell as new Caledonia)

As for my current state (SA) we border everything but the ACT and Tasmania (plus all the stuff mentioned above)

I think iv'e had my fill of bieng a smartypants, someone elses turn.

In Germany I was barely 10 minutes away from the Netherlands. ^_^ Now however I'm in a country bordered by Belgium, Andorra, Spain, old beloved Germany, by sea the UK, Italy, and for the only controlled borders, Switzerland, Surinam and Brazil. Might forget a couple ones. :/

In my case, in land (and river) borders, Canada is just a 20-minute drive north on I-75 and across the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor (I'm in metropolitan Detroit BTW). The only other land border we have is with Mexico, a 1-day, 4-hour drive by taking I-75 south to I-71 south to I-65 south to I-40 west to U.S. 67/U.S. 167 south to I-30 west to U.S. 59 south to TX 315 west to U.S. 259 south back to U.S. 59 south to TX 91 Loop south to U.S. 77 south to I-37 south to Heroica Matamoros.

Speaking of water borders, the closest is with the Bahamas, which is an average 8-hour flight to Nassau on Delta Airlines with a stopover in Atlanta. The next closest is Bermuda which on Delta Airlines is 6 hours long with a stopover in Atlanta (did you hear that again?). And for our far Atlantic borders, from north to south, the first is Spain, a 14-hour flight via either JFK Airport in New York City or Atlanta (yup, that airport again! :P), again on Delta. Next is Portugal, which is arrived the same way as I would with Spain, but after arriving, either a 6-hour, 45-minute drive on a southern route or a 7 1/2-hour drive on a northern route to the closest point of Portugal to the U.S. (ironically not only that but it is the westernmost part of both mainland Europe and the Eurasia landmass!! :O

Next are Morocco, then Western Sahara and then the Canary Islands, all of which isn't possible. For the Pacific far borders, the closest is Russia, which would be a very long car trip all the way to extreme western Alaska, then a hop on an ice boat across the Bering Strait. After that is Japan, a 13-hour plane ride to Tokyo.

The USA does not actually border any country across the Atlantic. They're much too far away. :P

    Russia is, however, close enough.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

While I am an American, I'm currently an expat living in Japan. Here, we've got water borders with Russia, Korea, China, and Taiwan. Hawaii is just too far away to say we border the US here.

Direct neighbors are Belgium and Germany. Across the North Sea there's the UK.

In the Caribbean we share the tiny island of Sint Maarten with France, and there are sea borders with Venezuela and Saint Kitts and Nevis, and when you count the Exclusive Economical Zones, there are also borders with the Dominican Republic, Anguilla (UK) and the American Virgin Islands.

Technically the country or the Netherlands only borders to: Germanny, Belgium and England in Europe. In the Caribbean the country borders with Venezuela and Curacao (Bonaire is part of the country), Saba and Sint Eustatius border with Sint Maarten (Dutch part) and Sint Kitts and Nevice.

The kingdom has the borders posted by Wiecher. So like the UK there are severall countries within the kingdom. Aruba, Curacao and Sint-Maarten are seperate countries within the kingdom.

Old empires never really die, eh? There is a Department of France in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (St. Pierre et Miquelon). Everything is just fine with us and them, but when you take a boat into St. Pierre, you have to remember the buoyage system is different or you'll go aground.

I'm in Hawaii, so I don't get many international neighbors by land so I just consider all the island-states in the pacific as my neighbors.

Finland borders Russia to the east, Sweden to the west and Norway to the north. Oh and to the south across the Gulf of Finland there is Estonia but really no sea border between Estonia and Finland because there is a narrow strip of international waters in between 4 km in width if I remember correct. With Sweden we share both land and water borders with Norway its land border or actually there is rivers and some lakes running along the borders with Norway and Sweden. And what comes to Russia which we share the longest strip of land border with is actually mostly shared with the Autonomic Republic of Karelia which is part of Russia.

Being from Minnesota, Canada is a mere 4-5 hour drive from my spot in the Twin Cities, depending on if you follow 35 north through Duluth to 61, or if you go straight up the middle via 169 to International Falls. Done both, for a city slicker like me it's like another world up there.

Only actually crossed into Canada once, though. Drove into Thunder Bay. Now I'm planning to take a trip to Banff next summer.
